Joie's Diet Journal
I'm not exactly counting calories, but I am watching what types of foods I eat. My main problem with calories is actually that when I watch what I eat, I don't realize how few calories I take in, and I need to intake enough to keep myself healthy while still losing weight. My calculations say that this is 1800-2000 calories for me right now.

Probably the journal I will keep up with the most, though I am going to try my hardest to keep up with the others as well. I've gained a lot of weight over the last year; I'm actually at my heaviest right now. My ultimate goal is to get down to 150, which is about 150 pound weight loss. x__x;;

On a weekly average I'd like to lose about 2-3lbs if that's possible. So I'll go ahead and say 8-10lbs a month. ^^

WOW, this place got up and running fast!

Alright, well. . . I guess it's time for Wendy's testimonial.

I'm just barely 100 pounds, and I eat nothing but junk food. I don't starve myself, I'm not a anorexic or bulimic or have an eating disorder at all. . .

My problem is simply that I don't eat healthily at all. My diet normally consists of no real breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but more like snacking on Goldfish, Cheez-its, KitKats, and other candy and junk stuff all day long. It's taken its toll on me, and I'm just not so sure how to eat right. I've tried small eating right plans, but they've only lasted a week or so. . . I'm just unmotivated and need people to keep me in line. Drinks are a problem, too. I love milk and water, but I'd most always want to have a soda -- mainly Dr. Pepper or Coca-Cola. These sugary drinks just appeal to me. If I'm not eating them around the clock, I start to feel faint and nauseated, and therefore get sick. Okay, so yeah, I NEED HELP.

Yay! Wendy posted. : )

I have a couple questions for you based on your testimonial. : ) One... what kind of meal plans have you tried. And two, what kind of meal plan(s) are you interested in trying? ^^

Windy: It sounds like you're not getting enough complex carbohydrates--you crave the sodas because they have sugar, which you need to survive. If you don't get enough sugars, as well as enough vitamins and minerals, you'll start feeling very faint. I never had a problem with being too small, but I have experienced in the past, when I was dieting too heavily, that dizzy nauseous feeling of not having enough nutrients. Iron could also be a major deficiency, from the sound of it.

We'll help you work on keep yourself together! You can do it!

I need to start thinking about menus for the next couple of weeks and make up a grocery list. >.<;

I think lots of salads would good... and then some yogurt and fruit... half sandwiches might not be too bad from time to time... Hmm... *starts to write out menus*

@Joie: Complex carbohydrates? So you mean, there's that sort of sugar that's actually GOOD for you in OTHER foods? I just thought it was my undying love for sodas and sweets. . . What kind of foods would you suggest me eating that have these carbs?

@Chai: Well, not really meal plans so much, but they were more like. . . a schedule. I would actually wake up early enough in the morning to eat breakfast, but school takes its toll on me and I have to sleep with what time I have, which is mainly just five or six hours a night. There's no way I could wake up early enough to eat breakfast. I would eat something on the go, but it's not like I can eat cereal in the car or something. I do suppose I could try yogurt, but that doesn't seem like enough.

I'm willing to try a meal plan that starts out WITH the same stuff that I'm currently indulging myself in: sweets, junk food, etc., but weens me off of them slowly. I can't cut stuff off cold turkey -- it would ruin me completely. D:

@Chai: On a normal day -- well, for the past week? I've been out of school, and I'll be out for another week next week. I wake up around noon, don't eat breakfast, but go and get a bag of Goldfish crackers and munch on those until I get tired of the taste. Then I'll get something sweet to counter the salty, and then go back and forth. If my parents decide to heat up a pizza for dinner, I might have a slice or two. My dad went out for seafood last night, and I had about a dozen shrimp with fries. But yeah, it's not healthy at ALL.

@Windy:Well there's sugar and there's sugar. That's sugar as we think of it, all sweet and belonging in yummy junk food, and there's the sugar our bodies break down from heavy starches. Potatoes with the peels on are really good for you (the peels have most of the minerals the same goes for apples and pears), some pasta wouldn't be bad, and you probably need iron in your diet, which you'll find in most meats. The best bread has whole wheat flour, not enriched flour, things like that. Eat cereals for lots of good nutritional value, try for fruits and veggies--but also take a vitamin supplement, just in case. And you can still eat junk food, just not only that. Everyone needs a little bit of sugar, a little bit of fat, a little bit of cholestrol. They don't need a lot of any of it.

Hmm... well I think you definitely need to look at a more balanced daily intake. I personally love goldfish crackers (and cheez-its) and one thing I do is eat either pieces of deli meat or a piece of fruit with them. You haven't mentioned a whole lot of protein type things.

I think you can (at least a first) eat what you've been eating, but try eating something more healthy along side them.... Then eventually you might be able to slowly cut back on the "junk foods" and eat more healthy choices instead.

Chai's right. The salty snacks aren't horrible going to kill you, you just don't get a lot of balance. Everything in your body is made up of protein! (well, sort of.)

I have recently been eating tuna with crackers. My mom bought me tuna packages to take to lunch, and tuna has always been a favorite of mine. I was eating turkey sandwiches every day, however, my teacher -- who is a health nut -- told me that processed meat should only be eaten only once a week or so because it can cause cancer if eaten excessively. Also, it was making me sleep about three hours after school because there's a chemical in it that makes your brain shut down. So no more turkey.

I would love to have a hamburger every single day, but that's never going to happen. . . XD;

If you didn't eat any foods that may possibly be linked to cancer, you wouldn't eat much. Certainly, it's best to stay away from preservatives and other additives, but that isn't always possible in today's world. It's great to check the labels on foods you buy, though, so you know what kind of chemicals you're eating.

Hey there. My problem is not that I don't eat healthy, it's that I can't get myself to exercise regularly.

I've been following the Susan Powter books and information for my diet (Susan Powter basically says, eat stuff that is less than 30% fat.)

Most food info lies though, you have to multiply the fat grams by 9 and divide the calories by the number to get the real info.

Anyway I just can't seem to get myself to exercise regular. I'll do alright for a couple days, then get too busy or tired to continue, and it'll be a month before I get any real exercise.

At this time one year ago, I was a size 12. Now I'm a size 16, and I've never been this big before. I'm 17 and I've been a 10 or 12 since I was 10 years old. Now...I have to wear my mother's old jeans.

I don't know if that's a testimony, but you can put it up if you want. I <3 Susan Powter though. She has no strict rules and instead just tells you how to be healthy.

@Windy-soft drinks make me ill. I mean literally. My hands shake and my heart beats too fast when I drink them. :P They might just be making you unhealthy. Goldfish and Cheezits sound carbolishious though. I think some nice veggies would break the sweet n' salty cycle.

Hello Windy and Sweet Lemon! ^____^

My number one tip has always been: avoid processed foods as much as you can! The first time I lost weight, I did it by switching to organic foods. But really, you don't even need to go totally organic (sometimes that can get expensive!). Just start reading labels and get to know your foods and nutrients! Soon it becomes second nature.

Basically this means avoiding the sodas, processed meats (even most lunch meat), white breads and pastas, canned foods with a lot of salt in them, most chips, crackers and candies...which may sound kind of daunting. But then you start looking what you can eat that is really good for you, food with real nutritional value, and the fresh foods start tasting way better than the old junk foods!

I had lost 35 pounds by eating lots of fruits and veggies (even dried fruits and juices without added sugar), whole grain breads and pasta, natural meats (like baked chicken breast and fish) and soy protiens, low fat natural dairy products, nuts and beans, and brown rice and other whole grains like oatmeal and quinoa. There's such a variety there, that after a couple weeks of getting used to it, I didn't feel deprived. And yeah, sometimes I had a little splurge on some chocolate or a small hamburger - but if you're eating really healthy 90% of the time, a small treat now and then doesn't hurt too much. Being too strict just leads to binges!

It's once I got back into school and I was busy and stressed out that my eating started slipping back into processed junk food - and it's truly shocking how fast the weight came back!! And with it a general feeling of tiredness and bad health. I know I'm not getting those nutrients any more. So that's my what my weight loss plan is, as well as my best advice - a wide variety of natural, unprocessed foods!

@Lemon: Sounds like the Exercise Journal would be right up your alley. I have pretty much the same problem, whenever I have time to exercise, I find myself too tired to do it. That's why I'm only starting out with twenty minutes a day. I figure I can slip in a mini aerobic workout at some point during the day that I'm not as tired. ^^

@Ryu: I completely agree with the fruits, veggies, and whole grain foods. : ) I personally love fresh fruit...mmm... I do have a hard time eating veggies though, there is just not that many I can stand to eat and they are usually seasonal. If I'm lucky I can find frozen veggies. ^^

I'm really glad that a lot of brands are going more towards the whole grains. ^.^

-stalk Ryuumi-
XD jkjk! Oooh! Two health hangouts! :] Me likey. XDD

As Ryuu probably already knows, I'm not too keen on losing weight, but more of losing fat. :P My fat percentage is pretty high. >w< 25%! Dangerous! Especially for my age [I guess you're allowed to have more body fat when you're older. o.o Boobs?]. >w<
And my height! Gah that's another problem. >w<
5'1 and 113lbs [checked today XD]. I want to exchange the weight of my fat for weight in muscle. X]

How I eat : For the morning, I now eat a peanut butter sandwhich. :X May not be the healthiest choice, but I think it keeps me full. I usually get hungry in another 2 hours, but since we can't snack in class [and I never bring anything to snack with XD] I'm usually starving by lunchtime. @[email protected] Almost everyone is though. XD I hear lots of grumbly stomachs during the period before lunch. XDDD
Lunch, our school has good portion control, I feel unsatisfied, but actually okay. I can't say they serve the healthiest foods, but the pizzas are small, smaller than the pan [personal?] pizzas you get at pizza places. XD When I get back from school, either 3 or 4:30P.M., I usually eat something else. Sandwhich with packaged deli turkey and a slice of cheese. D; But daaaang, is that turkey SALTY! I should like, wash it before eating roflmao. XDD Sometimes I eat cereal, but weather has been cold lately so I either eat some dinner early [my grandpa cooked it early today anyway] or another pb sandwhich. >w<
I don't want to go under 2,000 calories a day, simply because I am still growing [age 13] and my metabolism will be considered high compared to the rest of my life. XDDD I did this calorie intake thingy, and it said to maintain my weight, I should eat 2,284 calories [give or take, I may have done a calculation wrong XD]. To lose a lb a week, I would cut out 500 calories, making it 1,784 calories. XP Anymore, and my muslces will be burned for energy. @[email protected] That's like, killing your family and eating them! Dx

To Chai and JoieD, I really recommend eating more than 1,500 calories a day. :[ I don't want you guys killing your family roflmao. o.o The calorie intaker is based on height, weight, and age, so you guys should start out with more food, since for sure, you both are taller and older. XD If you two so happen to be under 13 and 5'1, I'd laugh at you. .___.' More for the height thing anyway. XD

Exercise: Since I don't plan on changing my diet too much, I want to excel more in exercise. I too, have a personal trainer every 2 days a week, so there's my strength training. XD For cardio, I really want to work on dancing, and take dancing as a hobby. :] I want to learn breakdancing, so I'll have to build alot of upper body muscle. XD I hope that won't look too weird on a girl, but if worst comes to worst, WHOMG LOOK A LONG SLEEVED SHIRT. XD I'm beginning to dislike the treadmill....it's pretty boring and it sounds like it's going to break any second...so yeah. :S At home, I usually dance like some kind of idiot to hiphop/dance/ect music. It actually kinda encourages me to move. :] You should see me, you'd get a great exercise from laughing. XDDD

I might think about making a journal. :] Especially since it's typing. XD I HATE writing with a pencil! Gaaahh. @[email protected]; Well, right now I'm eating grapes so... 1 point for me? XD Roflmao~
