To Midnight: Thank you for your concern about the numbers on my food journal. I believe I said there that I am not really concerned with counting calories, but rather with reducing overall intake and choosing healthier foods. The number I gave in my journal was a mistake on my part. In fact, I had haphazardly copied and pasted from something I used before, and forgotten to change the number on the calories. According to my calculations, to remain at my current weight my body needs just over 2500 calories. I would not want to reduce by more than 500 in my eating plan.

@Joie: I do like squash. Yum yum! : ) I've only ever had yellow squash, but I wouldn't be opposed to trying another varity. Pretty much the veggies I will eat:
Yellow Squash
Zuccini
Green Beans
Cauliflower
Broccoli(occasionally and only if it's cooked really well)
Snow Peas
Sugar Snap Peas
Spinach
Lettuce
Bean Sprouts
Asparagus
It's a pretty good list. ^^ More than anything is finding the time to cook them how I like. ^.^;
@Midnight: I've visited several calorie counting sites and I have been told that basically the calories you intake should be around your goal weight x 10 (or x 12 if you're really active, which I'm not). I'd really like to get down to 125-130, but I am going to shoot for 150 for now. If it turns out that I need to up my calories because I suddenly become more active, I will. ^^
I commend you on wanting to build up your muscle mass. ^_^ One day I would like to be a bit muscular and toned...but that's a bit of a ways into the future. : D
I really hope you decide to keep a journal, it will be interesting to see what kind of exercises you do and types of foods you eat. ^_^

@Sweet Lemon Effect: Ah, but I hate vegetables. I love potatoes when it's a baked potato, french fries, mashed potatoes, or potato chips, but no other vegetables at all. >/ V8 Juice even makes me cringe. *Shakes* Those are full of starchy goodness though, so chances are they would make me crave sweet things anymore. I'm in such a predicament. . . D:
Also, I haven't ever exercised since maybe I was forced to in middle school physical education. I'm a senior in high school now. I just don't think I have the need to since I'm already so thin, but I am very brittle. I'm very susceptible to pain, but I doubt that has anything to do with my physical shape / lack of exercise.
@Ryuumi: I love breads and fruits -- vegetables and pasta, not so much. Now, pasta is delicious, don't get me wrong. It's just whenever I attempt to eat it, it's like the noodles just want to stick to the back of my throat and not go down. I've gagged myself with pasta way too many times for me to ever consider eating it again. The rubbery texture makes me shudder to even think about.
I'm not so much looking to LOSE weight -- I want to eat healthier. Processed meats, I've heard, are meat, yes, and they have protein, but the fact that they're lunch meats means they've had a lot of extra preservatives added to them, and that's not healthy for you. My mother did buy me some all natural deli turkey the other day though -- no preservatives added.

There are a lot of tips out there. x3 Mostly because everyone's diet is specific to their own body type and such. : D
My major problem is carbs.... which is why I'm trying to cut a lot of the unhealthy ones out. I did Atkins/South Beach for over a year, and I did lose 40 pounds, but I don't think I could go back on it to be truthful. I got to a point where I really hated meat, even steak which I really love. But at least I can take what I learned from doing that diet and apply to a new diet that might work even better for me. ^_^
I think one of the big issues that people have while dieting is that they don't single out their problems and work on them. I know I eat a lot carbs, I also no I don't eat regularly, and my meal sizes vary. So those are the things I'm centering on. : )

Hey, all! Even though I'm officially starting my plan on Monday, I've done really well today -we have this restautrant here called Sweet Tomatoes, that's mainly a huge salad buffet, plus healthy soups, breads, and pastas. I had a great big salad, fruit and white bean chili for lunch. Yum!!
@Midnight - oooo, stalker! *lol* Welcome! And you know, that peanut butter sandwich in the morning might not be as bad for you as might think! A serving of quality, natural peanut butter is a good source of protien and good fats. I get the Skippy Natural PB, and eat a tablespoon or two of that on whole wheat toast - it keeps me full in the morning, too! Sometimes I put a little no sugar added applesauce on top to the PB...Mmmmmm...
@Chai - your Veggie Like list looks a lot like mine! Except I'd take out the cauliflower and add green cabbage. I recently tried brussels sprouts again for the first time since I was five. *lol* They were actually pretty good! If they're steamed properly, they have a very mild, sweet taste. Oooo, and I loooooooove sweet potatoes!! I'll bake them for about 40-60 minutes, and they dont; even need any toppings - yum!!
Oh, and I tried a low carb thing, too...ugh! After a couple of weeks I started feeling gross, like I was greasy. It was just way too much meat! And now I tend to go vegetarian for a weeks at a time, so I don't think I could do it now. *lol*
@Leela - Yay!!! Hi, Leela!! I'm really excited about this group - I think we're all going to fabulously!
@Windy - you're absolutely right about the lunch meats! I've pretty much weened myself off them, and the only sandwiches I have are tuna, PB, or egg salad. But if I do buy lunch meat, I always get it from a natural foods store, so I know it's not full of salts and preservatives!

@Ryu: Congrats and starting ahead of the game! : D I wish we had a salad bar place here. : ( We do have a buffet, but it's sort of expensive to go to. They do offer fresh fruit and a pretty good salad there though. : )
I've actually never tried Brussels sprouts. I might have to find a good recipe and give them a go. I need to start collecting recipes to make...or at least to convert. : ) I'm all for using Splenda, I think it actually tastes good and doesn't live a funky taste in your mouth like Nutrisweet or Equal. ^^;
I don't really like just peanut butter sandwiches... I usually make peanut butter and honey sandwiches with a sugar free honey. : 3 I will eat those for breakfast and sometimes lunch. ^_^
I also wouldn't be opposed to trying a peanut butter and banana sandwich... I haven't had one of those since I was a kid, but I bet I still like them. ^_^

Well, I may have had a really healthy lunch...but now I'm craving Mexican food like nobody's business! And not a healthy fajita either...I mean big ol' bean and cheese burrito! *lol*
Another good way to cook brussels sprouts is to lightly steam them, and then sautee them briefly with a little olive oil and garlic. Yummy! I agree about the Splenda - I've always hated aspartame. I always use Splenda in my coffee.
PB and honey, yum! And the banana, too...sometimes, I'll take a banana and cut it in half length wise, then spread PB on one half, and...PB and banana sandwich, with out the bread! *lol*

I need to figure out a good way to steam things without actually getting a steamer. D; I just don't have the money right now to buy one. : S

XP I've been using Jif, I don't think that's really healthy though. XD Is 190 calories for 2 tablespoons too bad? :S Also, could you tell me the fiber of your Skippy? I want to know if smooth and crunchy have any fiber difference. XD

Hi again, thanks for letting me join you! I am excited to mix my addiction to avi sites with my need to be healthier. I blame the computer for my laziness lately! LOL
I have read through and caught up. I really like the challenge ideas.
Another web site that is great - www.sparkpeople.com
There is a good community there, but the tools are great if you want to track your foods. That's what I will be using. You can use their meal plans, or your own.
I have followed the South Beach diet for years and did quite well. It is not to be confused with Low Carb diets as the focus is on whole foods and whole grains. You need to have 5+ servings of vegetables a day, lean meats only and eggs, nuts, beans etc.
I am just having trouble getting back on a healthy life style.
When I went back on the wagon and was exercising after my daughter was born, I did very well. I have a treadmill and was training to run a 5k, which is still my goal one day. After moving to a home office, I find I move a lot less and rarely leave the house anymore - not good as I also have social anxiety and take meds for that.
Anyhoo, before this gets too long and your eyes glaze over, I will just say that I also plan on starting tomorrow. My focus will be on whole natural foods, watching fats and calories as well as getting back on the treadmill, even if it's only for 20 min a day to start.
My doc says because I work from home, she recommends 1 hour of exercise at least 5 days a week...I'll have to work back up to that!

@Leela: I went ahead and signed up on sparkpeople.com, it looks really interesting. I haven't had time to fully explore it yet, but I will! : D I'll also post the link up on the first page. : )
Are you going to continue on the South Beach diet plan, or are you going to try something new? : )
A 5k run would be awesome to do. : D I've always wanted to do one for cancer awareness, but I would be afraid of coming in dead last...or passing out in the middle of the run (or walk, heh heh). But that's awesome that you're striving for that. ^_^
Also, would you like me to add part of your post as a testimonial? You don't have to of course, but I just thought I'd ask. ^_^

Wow, so much great conversation going around here. About the peanut butter sandwiches: if you're not using jelly, they can be very good for you (natural is always preferable). I love all the ideas people have for adding to the simple peanut butter sandwich, too.
I've never had brussel sprouts, I should definitely try them. My vegetable list is incredibly small. I can't stand bitter veggies and there are some that I think I may be allergic to, because I've never been able to eat them.
I do like:
yellow squash
zucchini
green beans
peas
snow peas
all lettuces other than iceberg
red and green cabbage
cawliflower
carrots (preferably raw)
pickles, but not cucumbers
tomatoes, which for the sake of the nutrients in them I'm calling a veggie.

Oh, I should add cucumber and cabbage to my list too. x3 I really can't stand carrots though...unless it's carrot salad, which is okay as long as it's made right. I just find them icky tasting for the most part. x3 Even if they've been steamed and soaked in brown sugar. >.<;
Has anyone tried the new V8 Splash flavors? I tried the Pina Colada smoothie once, and it wasn't too bad. I'm curious what they're fruit flavors taste like though?

Only $30? Wow. : 3 I actually thought I did pretty good, I only spent $105. And I was completely out of food too...so there were a lot of groceries. xDD
I think the next time I'm at the store I'll take a look at the V8 stuff. I can't stand to drink normal V8, but if it's fruity...then I can probably stand it a bit more. x3
