I'm trying to get more into anime, not really having watched much. What I HAVE seen wasn't really impressive. I'm kind of into Gundam 00, I watched the first episode today and it was cool. I've also watched Carcaptor Sakura, and that's about the anime I've seen. Unless you count Pokemon or Yugioh :/

So what I really want is for you guys to recommend anime for me. Tell me a little about the anime you recommend also. Please and thanks :3

Uhm, it depends on what kind of anime you happen to like. For me I'd recommend Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Darker than Black, Ghost Hounds, and Moyashimon(Tales of Agriculture). Most of them are shounen series except for Moyashimon. That's more of a Slice of Life, comedy thing.

It really depends on what kind of anime you're interested in. What sorts of plots and genre. Clearly you've seen some magical girl with CCS as well as some mech with Gundam. I can try and break down some recommendations for you though.

School Rumble - A school-days comedy. It's cute and funny and full of silly misunderstandings. Girl likes boy, but boy doesn't see her there. Other boy likes the same girl, but girl is too obsessed with other boy to care. There's not really any magic or fantasy, just a lot of comical situations.

Fate/Stay Night - Based off of a series of games by the same name it's very fantasy based and has a fair bit of action. Most people who have seen it seem to have liked it so I would highly recommend it.

Nodame Cantabile - This is another series with no fantasy or future elements. Instead it's a real-life romance story with plenty of school elements thrown in. Except in this case it's a music college. The characters are all really funny and there's a lot of awesome classical music thrown in.

Full Metal Alchemist - Takes place in a world where alchemy is real. Plenty of action and adventure here. One of my faves.

I could go on.

if you're really looking for more I would highly suggest looking through http://www.anidb.net for a lot of good summaries. You can even sort by genre for a better fit.

Thank you both, and I'll be sure to check that site out :3

I don't really care what genre, and any plot as long as it's interesting. I'm open for trying just about anything, really.
EDIT: If I had to pick a genre, It'd be horror. I love horror :3 So if there's any good horror/scary anime, I'd love to hear your suggestions on that.

YES JIGOKU SHOUJO. *cough*

I mean... I highly recommend that series as one of my favorites as well.

Also, Le Portrait de Petit Cossette was pretty creepy. Here's anidb's complete index of all horror labelled anime. Click

Also for some more classics with plenty of action:
Cowboy Bebop

Oh, James, I could give you plenty of suggestions. XD Probably too many.

Cows Go Moo mentioned Ghost Hound, which is a pretty good series imo, but definitely not for everyone. It's a mix between the psyche and the supernatural, though in recent eps it has started to lean more towards the latter. But anyway, since the plot moves a little slowly, people tend to get bored and complain.

Hagane No Renkinjutushi/FullMetal Alchemist is a great series, and probably a good icebreaker if you haven't seen many anime. It's very different from the manga, but it turned out well, and its easy to get into unless you just really don't like that sort of thing.

The only thing I don't really recommend doing, is trying out one of the popular shounen series. (Bleach, Naruto, etc.) Mostly because they're really long, get really old, and are all hyped up.

What you should probably do, is get some various titles from people then look them up on Wikipedia.. then you can read a bit about the series and see if its something you'd be interested in watching. Just be careful not to read too far in or you'll get spoilers! XD

Buuuut I know a ton of random series so shoot me a PM if you want some more titles.

edit;;

Ahhh, horror? People are saying Jigoku Shoujo. That's a good one for sure, just make sure you start with season one, not Futakomori. XD
Ghost Hound is on the Horror side.
I haven't watched it, but apparently Lain is as well.
Theres a new OVA series coming out now called Mnemosyne. It's horror/action. I watched it but I can't make good judgment yet.. to me it was mostly gore and nudity. XDD But it was slightly intriguing. Slightly.
Nnn.. Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro might be horror-ish, if you don't mind the few filler-esque episodes in the beginning. Honestly the manga is way better but the anime is rather pretty. XD (good animation, voices, etc.) Neuro's in my sig for example. :lol:

That's all I can think of off the top of my head right now.

Yay Im glad you like School Rumble. We aired it at anime club and it was a huge hit.

I forgot to add that if you like action and school stuff, then Full Metal Panic is pretty good too.

Hmm, horror, huh? I don't watch a lot of horror anime, though I love horror. Even so, I haven't found one that was scary yet. ^^; Personally, I'd rather read horror manga; some of them have wonderful pacing and paneling. A lot of people seem to like Jigoku Shoujo ('Hell Girl'), and from what I've heard the plot is very interesting.

Hum. I can only make out two horror genre animes that I've seen, and that's Yami no Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness) and Petshop of Horrors. I like Yami no Matsuei for the subtle shounen-ai and the creepy doctor. xD; It's not really that much of a 'horror' than it is 'psychological', I guess. Petshop of Horrors is pretty creepy, but it's sorta old. It's not my cup of tea.

However, I've seen a lot of cutesy animes! One of the only shoujo anime that I like is Fruits Basket. It's quite sad and heartwarming; I'm not one to cry when I see movies or shows, but watching it always makes me cry. I can empathize with the characters~ The anime's plot is so-so, and the ending leaves a lot of questions.

Oh! Ouran High School Host Club (Ouran Koukou HOSUTO bu) makes me laugh so hard! There isn't much of a plot until the last four or two episodes, but~ still~! It's so funny.

I agree that you shouldn't really start off watching some of the more popular shounen series, because they do, indeed, get very long. (200+ episodes?!?) But you can if you want. Just take it in small doses if you do. xD;

For horror...I'd have to recommend Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni/When They Cry. Seriously, that one just plain freaks me out...I haven't seen more than two episodes; I don't like to watch that kind of thing before I go to sleep, and that's my main anime watching time. XD; But from what I have seen, it's pretty damn good, and I have a friend who's been really pushing me to finish the series...and I trust her judgment very much, so yeah. ^^;

I might also recommend Serial Experiments Lain - it's not anywhere near typical horror-horror, but more psychological horror. Very unsettling at points...I loved it. XD

And while neither are actually horror, I also have to recommend two in particular:

One - Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - amazing plot, amazing characters, and since you're already getting into Gundam 00, the whole mecha thing shouldn't be anything too weird. XD It's got the suspense and supernatural theme of Death Note (with the two protagonists being remarkably similar, I might add [though I like Lelouch infinitely better than Light...okay, I'll stop rambling now]), combined with the action of various other shows, combined wonderfully...and there's also a nice little mystery that I'm pondering heavily with the approach of season 2. Supposedly, it's going to start airing on Adult Swim this spring, though...so I suggest looking into it fast, before the rabid people scare you off. o_o;;

Two - Fullmetal Alchemist. I'm telling you, it has EVERYTHING. Both wildly fictionalized physical alchemy, and very real alchemical symbolism. Action, suspense, drama...pretty much anything you could want. And while it's far from actually being horror, it sure does have some frightening images at times. I've been having nightmares about the end for over two years. Which is saying something, there. @[email protected];;; The plot is quite exciting, and VERY easy to get into...but I warn you, it will probably make you cry at one point or another. I know a LOT of people who went into it going "Pfft...I'm not gonna cry. I don't cry over cartoons, that's silly," and next thing I knew, they were crying. It really is that powerful at points. It made me look like a horrible crybaby when I watched it, let me tell you. XD

Fullmetal: Thank you very much! I'll definately look into those. See, psychological scary is the kind I absolutely adore. I'm not into the slasher, jump out at your rawr kind of scary. I love the kind that really mess with your head.

So yeah, I'll definitely look into those, they sound pretty good. I'll also look into Fullmetal Alchemist. I've heard of it before, but never really even understood it, or took the time to see what it was all about. I'll definitely look into it now.

Oooh... psychological horror it is then?

>.> *coughjigokushoujocough*

You might like Deathnote actully (so long as you can ignore the fanbase which gets a little ridic sometimes). I liked it to a certain point.

I also heard good things about Monster as being a good example of the genre.

*squeezehug* Thats right, I'm sorry! I totally forgot with the event going and stuff. ><

Hehe, glad you're enjoying one! A really short series I'd also recommend (that's hilarious) is Doujin Work. It's like 12 episodes and each one is about 15 min or so, I think? Very short. Full of pervy jokes and general silliness. XD

Ah, and Higurashi is a good one to check out for sure. It's made after one of those virtual novel games, which would have several different endings. So, every several episodes, it resets and starts along a new path. That way, by the end of the series you've seen things from several different perspectives and can kinda piece together what actually happened. There's a second season out, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni KAI, and a third one is in the works. :3

@Fullmetal Phantom; Ahahah. XD FMA made me cry.. a LOT. <<;;

hahaha, I knew linking you to Gundam 00 was a good idea! :P

Now, my recommendations:

Gunslinger Girl: It's about a group of girls that were saved from death by a government association, and then trained into becoming trained assassins, all under the government's guise.

Ouran Highschool Host Club: It's about a girl that after breaking a very expensive vase at her school, is forced to pretend to be a boy, and work for the school's Host Club, which is dedicated to hosting tea parties and wooing the female classmates.

Rumbling Hearts/Kimi Ga Nozumo Eien: It's a romance anime about a boy that falls in love with a girl, so they start dating until the girl gets run over by a car and is stuck in a comma for three years, and then she wakes up, but the boy is now dating her best friend, but she doesn't know that it's been three years, so they keep up a farce for a while. Very good and touching show.

Midori Days: It's about Seiji "Mad Dog" Sawamura, who despite being a well known trouble maker, couldn't get a girlfriend if it saved his life. But one day, his right hand is replaced by the figure of a girl, from the waist up. Turns out that she was a girl that had a crush on Seiji for a while now, and somehow, she ended up as his right hand. Also very good and has a lovely ending.

Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi: Remember that dance I showed you? Yeah, it's from this show. We see the events from the perspective of a guy called Kyon, that upon entering high school, is starting to believe in stuff like aliens, time travelers, ESPers and the like... Until he meets Suzumiya Haruhi, a girl that is interested in nothing but aliens, time travelers, ESPers and the like. So, she drags him into a club she founded, where she and her "SOS Brigade" dedicate themselves to finding weird events. And they do run into their share of weird stuff.

Wew, that was long. xD All of the shows, except for Ouran are licensed, so you can get the DVDs, and in Ouran's case, you can get the manga.

I don't like much horror, but I know a few good titles you might like.

Wolf's Rain - The Book of the Red Moon says when the world end the gates to Paradise will open, but only the wolves will find it.

This show can get pretty violent, but in the end, it is not about the fighting. It is about the characters. This anime is about a pack of wolves that go on an amazing journey to find Paradise. They are met with challenges along the way, mainly coming from the nobles who want to go to Paradise themselves. The art in this serices is not typical of your average anime, and the background are jaw-dropping. You wind up identifying with each of the characters from Kiba, the leader of the pack to Hubb, a young detective looking for his ex-wife.

Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna - "I'm going to pursure the mystery of the Blade Children," and with those words Kiyotaka Narumi disappeared without a trace.

If you love mysteries, this is your show. Not only are you given all the clues to solve each particular mystery, but they give you enough time to figure it out too. This show is about Ayumu Narumi, Kiyotaka's younger brother, as he follows in the footsteps of his older brother two years after he disappears and tries to find out who and what the Blade Children are. The only drawback is that this show was suppose to have two seasons, but it was canceled after the first one leaving the ending open. Only one volume of the manga it is based on has been released in English.

If I think of more later, I'll post them.

I'm surprised no one mentioned my favorite horror series (not counting Petshop because that's not really horror).

The only manga/anime that ever scared me was Ghost Hunt. It's cute at times, funny a lot of the time, and really truly horror at other times. It deals a lot with psychics, traditional ghost types, and just weird phenomena. It's a good and pretty factual introduction to Japanese ghost mythology and psychic theories.

I'd suggest skipping the first arc, just because it's irritating and kind of boring... but it's a good introduction to the characters. The characters set this apart, I think, as a really good series. The anime is good, but the manga is brilliant.

Uh... and yeah, that's Ghost HUNT, not Ghost Hound. Though Ghost Hound is good, too.

Horror, eh? Well, let's see there's: Hellsing, Death Note, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (don't watch [Kai] since that's the second season), Elfen Lied, Paranoia Agent, Boogiepop Phantom.

As for non-horror:

FullMetal Alchemist- I definitely recommend this series strongly. Its really well rounded, easy to understand (as long as you don't skip over episodes), and the characters are pretty likable as well. And there will be some times where you will cry (you probably scoff at the thought of it right now but once you get into it I guarantee). It's that good. :3

Cowboy Bebop- A great action show and a must see for new anime fans. You won't be disappointed.

My favorites consist of:

-Chobits

-Naruto (for the actual storyline, and for goodness sake, watch it in Japanese if you can)

-Hellsing (only 13 episodes, however /sigh)

and for the sheer zaniness of it all, Tenchi Muyo :)

Enjoy ^^

before I recommend any anime to someone I need to know what kind of stuff they like when it comes to movies, TV shows, and books.

now, what I really like is some of the seinen stuff out there. not the romancy fanservicy part of it, but the stuff with depth to it, the stuff that's trippy and/or psychological and/or philosophical. you've got titles like Boogiepop Phantom and Ergo Proxy which bring in horror elements, Serial Experiment: Lain which adds a techno twist, Darker Than BLACK which takes elements of noir, secret agent dramas, and super powers (with a very nice twist to the price of having them), stuff like Wolf's Rain that brings post-apocalyptic and mythic twist to it. on the opposite side of the spectrum there's stuff like Kino's Journey and Haibane Renmei which uses unusual but normalish settings for some wonderful but low action depth.

and, based on what I've seen, this is the kind of stuff many long time fans really start getting into when they've seen enough shojo and shonen it starts all seeming repetitive and blase.

Trigun - Trigun chronicles the misadventures of one Vash the Stampede. He's... well, he's a donut-loving, spiky-haired, sharp-shooting flirt with a dark, mysterious past and a price on his head. What could be better? The English dubbing is excellent as well. This is one of my all-time favorites, as I've seen all 26 (I think) episodes at least six times. o_o;;

Ah! My Goddess! - This one's a romantic comedy centering around a young man and a goddess! I personally love the artist's style, and the characters are just so lovable. Very funny, very charming story.

Yu Yu Hakusho
- Another all-time favorite of mine, although I haven't watched/read all of it. It begins with Yusuke Urameshi, a foul-mouthed, fight-starting, school-skipping delinquent with a drunkard for a mother, dying to save the life of a child! He then meets Botan, a cute and bubbly interpretation of Death incarnate, who guides him through a test to gain his life back.

^^;; I hope you like 'em, if you get a chance to see 'em.
