Me and my close friend have a goal in life: to change the world. Some people talk to us and then we are always faced with the same question. Is the world worth changing? Is the world so fucked up that there's no chance? What are your views?

The world can still change. BUT it is composed by an aggregation of systems that have functional reasons why they keep on staying. Systems are preserved so I think changing the world is way too much for two people. >.<;;

Of course you may change the world but what aspect of it are you after? Change the world of art? world of music? world of politics? Our world has too many specialized categories that you may only excel in one if you were to give your full focus on it. And the intact systems are hard to budge (Take politics for example). So I guess you and your friend is trying to bite more than you can chew. It's nice to have this kind of endeavor. But It might help specifying what, in particular, in the world do you want changed. ^_^

It depends upon what you want to change.

It'll take lots of time and effort to completely reform the billions of people living here, their culture, the land they live on, and how they view the future. To me, that seems like much more than any one person could do. If you're aiming for the whole shabang, you've got a long road ahead of you.

I do believe that many things are worth changing. But again - It depends on how you want to change them, why, and what you're really willing to do.

It's worth changing for the better yes, it just takes the right type of people to bring about those changes :) You know, people who are natural-born leaders and know what they're doing. The world is a big place and to change it, you have to listen to others if you want to be listened to.
I wouldn't say that the world is "too fucked up" to be changed and there's no point. However, the world is never perfect, and everyone has a different view on a perfect world to live in :]

If you really want to change the world, there is one painful truth you have to face: it's fucked up.
There is little hope, but don't give up. A difference is a difference. Even if you can never fix this world entirely, it's worth a try wherever you can. It's like asking, if everyone is going to die anyway, why should i save anyone from that burning building?

It depends on how you wnat to change it and how big a change it will be and how quickly it will take place. Some people just don't like change...

I think... as long as there is good. Especially good people who don't loose hope that there is hope for the world. I think there is always going to be the battle of good and evil. But the good must not give in or else honestly all hope will indeed be lost.
There is still good. I see in people everyday. Sure, we haven't had a Martin Luther King Jr. in a while or a figure like that... but have you noticed a lot of the people who did great things are mostly respected AFTER they die? Just like many great artists... I'm sure there is some wonderful people that are going to make a difference that effects us and puts them in our history books. Who knows? Those people could be you and your friend... If you have the right motives... do the right things.
There is bad in the world, but remember, there is always good. So, never lose hope.

The world is constantly changing every minute of every day. People, good and bad, are the cause of this. Think of this... every step in Iraq might change the world in one or the other direction. I've been thinking about this since my class is talking about Iraq and Iran lately. Just the other day the leader of Iran went and visited the leader of Iraq~!! Those who don't know why this is such a big deal... IT IS! You'll find that what's happening over there is actually very interesting. If you purely go from the news, then you don't have the full picture.... whoa going on something completely different now XP gonna stop here.

The world is definitely worth changing, though only in realistic increments. You can't think that warring with every country in the world is going to get rid of all terrorists (hinthint to my native country America), it's just not going to happen.

You also can't think that the world is going to easily become a peaceful place to live. Anywhere you go, and no matter what, there's always going to be -someone- who is pissed off at something, and you will always have people who decide that they need to kill/harm someone to get things done.

So yeah, the world is definitely worth changing, though perfection is still a few races off. The human race sure as hell ain't capable of it.

Of course the world is worth changing. It is the only world we know for sure that we will ever have, so why not? You cannot always make things change the way you want, but you can always try.

i want to change the world too. here are the laws i want to implement:

1. all druggies and murderers will be put to death by starvation.
2. all female humans limited to two children. if they have had an abortion or given up a child to be adopted, those children count as their own and they can't have anymore if they're already gotten pregnant twice.
3. all rapists will have their penises cut off.
4. cussing is not allowed. there will be a fine to anyone who cusses.
5. marriage will be outlawed.
6. makeup will be outlawed.
7. tattoos and piercings will be outlawed.
8. a ticket for speeding above 10 mph will make you lose your license for one year, and you have to take the DMV tests to get it back.
9. cursive will not be required to learn in school.
10. porn will be outlawed, along with any other forms of nudity shown in magazines or TV.
11. all people will ride tricycles; no cars or gasoline allowed.
12. no internet.
13. everyone farms for food.
14. we'll still have the election system, but no political parties.
15. everyone will speak one language. An alphabet like Hymite will be used, and all words will be respelled to look like they sound.
16. Guns will be outlawed. Anyone found with a gun will be shot with it, then the gun will be taken away and destroyed.
17. No more MLA, APA, Chicago or any other already existing style of writing papers. Superscripted alphabetical letters and endnotes will be used to cite sources in essays, reports, etc. There will be no subscripts or footnotes. Parenthetical citations will not be used to mark page numbers; the superscript would be "a-289" for page 289 of the first reference mentioned in the bibliography (source letter A).
18. A solar clock, terrestrial week, and astrological calendar will be used. Also, birthstones will be changed according to the colors of the rainbow.
19. Higher education (college) will not cost money. Twill be funded by the government just like grade school. Entrance to college depends on grades. Any smart person can become a doctor; money is not needed. If students mess up in school and later want to try again, they must apply to the government, pay a fee, and take a test or write an essay (depending on the course[s]) to retake a course or to go to the next grade level.
20. The differences in pay from job to job will not be as large of a gap. Jobs that require more schooling like doctors and lawyers will get paid more, but not much more than regular jobs such as teachers. Money earned will depend on both hours worked and years of school endured. For example, $1 per hour and $100 per year of school endured. If salaries are lowered to such numbers, prices of items/food/clothes/houses will also decrease accordingly.
21. All children will receive the last name of their mother, not their father.
22. Adulthood is not automatically granted at age 18 or any other age. Adulthood must be applied for by taking a test that assesses intelligence and child rearing knowledge. The intelligence part of the test is not any higher than would be required for high school graduation. It will consist of basic math, reading skills, and common sense knowledge. The test can be taken at any time. A person is not allowed to have babies without passing the test. If a woman gets pregnant without having passed the test, she must take the test as soon as possible in order to be allowed to keep her baby. If the woman refuses to take the adulthood test, she must decide whether to abort the baby or give it up for adoption. Passing an adulthood test is otherwise not required. You will remain in the care of your parents until you have passed the adulthood test. If you lose your parents or guardians via death, then you will automatically become an adult. You can legally remain under the insurance policy of your parents until you pass the adulthood test.
23. No countries.
24. Religion is discouraged. Ai is recommended. There will be freedom of religion, so you can believe whatever you want to believe. But you must keep your religion a private matter. Worship your god in your own house. No churches or temples. No converting is allowed. Religion will be taught in schools, but not alongside science or evolution; religion will be taught in a mythologies class or religions class. I think it goes without saying that all religions will be covered, not just Christianity.
25. Clothes will be made with androgyny in mind. No clothes will be strictly for boys or girls. Everyone can wear anything they like.
26. Everyone will write with their right hands and draw with their left hands.
27. Celsius and the metric system will be used universally.
28. It will be legally acceptable for people to commit suicide whether it be because of an incurable disease, Alzheimer's, or any random reason. People in today's world who live the rest of their lives in nursing homes or mental hospitals, never to recover, will just be put to painless death in my world. There will be no need for hospitals like that. If you can't care for yourself, then you are not fit to continue living. The government will not pay to keep alive people who are too old or diseased. If family members want to keep alive their old/dying relatives, then the family members must come up with the money themselves to pay for doctors/nurses to care for them in the relative's own home, not a nursing home or mental hospital.
29. Women who are pregnant with babies that are so retarded that they will not be able to move by themselves, do their homework by themselves, or take care of themselves by puberty will be given an automatic abortion. If the retardation is not discovered until after the baby has been born, then the baby will be killed after birth. What is done to the corpse is up to the woman. It can be donated to a research facility to fed to some wild animals. Also, women who are addicted to drugs while they're pregnant will be given automatic abortions, since the women are obviously incapable of taking care of themselves, not to mention the baby.
30. A required class to pass in school will be how to write checks, balance a checkbook, and pay taxes and bills.

No matter how fucked up the world is, it's the only one we have, so I would say that it being fucked up is the biggest reason to try to change it. This is what we have to live with and what we're leaving our children to live with so if we're not happy with it, then our only choices are to be miserable with it or make the change.

My view is this:
The world changes itsself already.

Nature could bring natural disasters and change the world as we know it. Being aware of that, what sense does it make to wonder wether changing the world would be a good idea? The world changes wether we like it or not^-^

Changing the world would require unification.
And no matter what system, someone always wants power.

wing_goddess, what kind of messed up rules are those?

26. Everyone will write with their right hands and draw with their left hands.

Now that's just stupid.

@ Wing_goddess:
When I began reading the laws you want to implement, I agreed with a few of them, but some of them seem outrageous.
1. Give them one chance to become straight-edge, and if they fail, then put them to death.
2. Eh. I will talk about this one throughout, but there are problems: What if a rape victim who had 2 kids before she was raped, wants to keep the child. Are you going to make her go through TWO tragedies? What if one child is murdered, or killed because of retardation? Does an adopted child count as one of the two?
3. I think rapists need a harsher punishment.
4. Yes.
5. Why outlaw marriage? That seems dumb.
6. I agree that makeup should not be worn in school, but what about when you go out, or in a play/movie where you practically need to change your nationality to fit your character?
7. Yes.
8. I think the speeding one should be changed to 15 miles above the limit, and at most 6 months of no driving.
9. Yes.
10. Yes.
11. The tricycles one kind-of cancels out the speed limit one, and I think that is dumb too. Bikes are fine, and even cars for long trips or when you need to carry bulky, heavy objects. 12. no internet, and 13. everyone farms for food, would only cancel out hundreds of years of progress. Sure, the internet has potential for corruption, but the internet is the fastest way to spread ideas and information. Since the internet, communication has improved, learning has become quicker and easier, and science has been progressing faster.
14. Eh, it could work, but the current system isn't that corrupt.
15. Yes, and it will have a universal sign language to go along with it.
16. Guns are an essential part of self defense. Go have a chat with some of the people in the guns debate thread to get some other perspectives on that subject.
17. For the most part, I agree, but I think we should keep the heading and double spaced aspects.
18. Yes, but why change the birth stones? I like the pretty rocks. And are you assuming that there will be only 6 or 7 birth months?
19. Higher education will start to be as lame as the current public education if it doesn't cost any money. The point of paying is to ensure that you do get GOOD education.
20. If doctors and lawyers are not paid enough to make up for the years of schooling they spent when they could have had a job, then no one will become a doctor, and the next time you get sick, you may get an uneducated doctor, or an auto mechanic working on you.
21. What is the difference? Just discriminating against males not instead of females? That tradition is just a convention, and some children do keep their mother's names if their parents are divorced, of the father was a jerk and left or something.
22. The adulthood test. I like this one a lot, but "A person is not allowed to have babies without passing the test"? What about rape victims who become pregnant? Does an adopted baby count as one of the two that women are allowed to have?
23. Eh, It could work, but it would also cause more confusion. Who would rule?
24. Discouraging religion will probably increase violence.
25. If you make clothes androgynous, everyone will have clothes that are too loose in some places, and too tight in others. I think a better policy is that clothes will be made with modesty in mind.
26. I am left handed, and proud of it. I will continue to write with my left hand no matter what you say.
27. I agree whole heartedly
28. I agree that people in hospitals should be allowed to choose death, but
Quote:
28. ... People in today's world who live the rest of their lives in nursing homes or mental hospitals, never to recover, will just be put to painless death in my world.
Those last three words explain this whole post. This is your own slightly messed-up world, and NO ONE else would want to live in it with all those rules. I recommend you become less one-sided about everything.
29. Let the women choose! If they want to take the time and effort to keep the baby, why shouldn't they be able to? With all these strict rules on birth, all you will accomplish is creating more business for underground clinics that don't follow the rules, and have less sanitary techniques but cost more money. Is that what you want?
30. Checks are quickly becoming extinct. This class would have been good ten years ago, but now I think we need to add Paypal and credit cards to the curriculum, and make checks a much smaller part.

We need optimistic people like you guys. Ignore the fact that we'll all eventually be dead and forgotten, or that the sun is going to turn into a red star and burn earth up in the process, etc. Because what is important is what we leave behind for the ones we love.

I'm pretty pessimistic, and I bring up the fact that "the sun's is going to burn up earth one day, so nothing we do matters" often, which my friends hate me for.

But, on the otherhand, I do believe that we should do what we can so the ones we love live in a better world

Though the world may be a really corrupted place right now, there's a reason why soap was created - to clean things up.

Good luck to you and your friend. I don't think it is hopeless, and I wouldn't ask why, because you guys are obviously much better people than us pessimists.

Dang, you're going to have a lot of work to do.

Oh, btw, I think wing_goddess's laws are a bit crazy, and most of them are stupid... sorry, but they are! I would be VERY afraid of a world under your rule... AND your laws sound too much like your endless list of discussion topics that you've been creating... >.>

What's the point? You'll die in about 70 years, and then it won't be your problem any more. As long as it doesn't effect you, ignore all problems. You can spend your life doing things you like, instead of worrying about things that are none of your business.

Rather than changing the whole world, I have begun to devote it to changing the world of a few individuals. People I meet. I believe Ghandi once said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world."

I buy the Big issue when I have the money to. I visit this website frequently. I try to be an open and forgiving person. I do little things now and again to give others a smile. I make sure to tell the people I know that they are incredible. Because everyone is.

Little things can often amount to something big.

You know, I think it's just near impossible to really make a change without the cooperation of others...
