If weapons were never invented, then people would use their fists and teeth. There will always be fighting, weapons or no weapons. I'm very sorry for what happened to you...but still, it wasn't the gun that did anything.

I know it's said a lot, but it's true - Guns don't kill people. People kill people.

I firmly believe that as long as such things exist, I should have a right to keep myself on an even power level with someone who would want to harm me, and so do you.

Why would you allow a immature teenager to hold a weapon? That doesn't make any sense.

I'm very sorry that your friend is in the hospital, its a very unfortunate thing to happen. However, even if this stalker did not have a gun he would have still found a way to hurt her.

We digress from the issue.

Had guns never been invented, we would still have war. Crusades were fought with swords. Tribal squabbles were fought with spears. Anger towards other people is one of the ways that people cope with their own personal problems, and it is the most common. If not with a gun, with fists. Sticks, rocks, broken bottles. One of the primal reactions when someone feels threatened is to fight. We would still have war. War will happen no matter what.

If guns had never been invented, then meat would not be available to the masses as efficiently as it is today. Technology would be set back a few decades because certain types of machinery would have never been invented to store, process, and preserve meat.

And we would still find a way to hurt the ones we love.

You have a right to be angry, but once again we deviate from the subject at hand.

a definite no,
unless they:
actually know how to use a gun
how to put it on safety
are not allowed to point it at anyone unless it is a
serious situation as an 'all else fails' technique
have taken lessons
know the consequences
otherwise still no, too many loonies out there for it to be safe to do that but I have no idea it can end your life or it can save it, it all depends on howyou use it really (:

Absolutely not, there are VERY few situations where you would ever need some sort of weapon in a school and the chances are, someone "trying to defend themselves" with a gun would cause more damage than good. I would be very nervous going to college knowing it's possible that someone sitting right next to me could be carrying something like that.

I guess I could understand carrying a pocket-knife but even that just seems way too risky.

Butterscotch: See, the thing is that you don't announce that the campus allows firearms. Instead, you simply take out the rule that says you can't have them. That way it allows them without encouraging it.

I've sort of thought about this a lot. ^^

I'd like to have my knife unconfiscated...

@Hyena- oh sorry I'll try to explain better:

I simply mean to say that if it is allowed, I would rather have the people who would like to carry a gun to take a class that shows them how to use it safely and to only be allowed to pull it out as a last resort and not to show off to friends. Maybe they could carry a card like a liscense but they have to show it to security or something before they walk in to the building

then I wouldn't have a problem with it at all (:

I think guns should not be allowed. Some would say that guns should because it will decrease the "hiding" behavior of students. But then again, they are guns. They are lethal weapons that creates stigmatization and uneasiness.

Whose parents would be comfortable in sending their students to a school who allow guns? Who is a student who like to have a seat mate who has a gun? I'm not saying that people are out of their minds all the time. I just mean that eliminating guns would decrease the likelihood of deaths in the campus.

Now let's think when guns are allowed? For what will the students use the guns? Protection? Is the school such a dangerous place? I think that's just crap. They just want to create a cowboy world where people shoot each other when they get pissed. Good luck in having a very dangerous school thanks to allowing guns.

Canary: See, that's what the mandatory class is for. If you take a class in gun safety, you get a card that says you passed the class. And of course the firearms wouldn't be allowed out in the buildings. That's just silly.

Joih:I can see where you are coming from, but if anything recent events have proven that a college campus is in fact a dangerous place. Ohio University gets reports of rapes at least once in a month. Ball State is always investigating one murder or another. And this is in the midwest. Just the midwest. As I have said before, guns can be allowed on campus but if the amendment to the rules isn't publicized other than amongst those who need to know, it will reduce the chance that an accident would occur.

As it is, rules on most campuses state that you cannot have any sort of weapon. Even if it is just a blade. They get confiscated straight away if you're caught with even a small knife other than a kitchen utensil. So if I get attacked... I'm not very strong. I'm not very fast, either. What do I do?

How would it NOT make things more dangerous? Seriously. There are creepy looking people in colleges. The majority of them might not be creepy enough to think about hurting people and bringing guns to class for the purpose of killing anyone, but we'd always wonder. Then we'd become paranoid, and begin carrying our own weapons. And then someone would get jumpy and make a mistake. That's a terrible notion. That will never be allowed.

A Drawing professor once said to me: "How can you know what 'too far' is until you cross the line?"

I'm okay with the "no guns" rule. I think that we have gotten along without guns in our schools for awhile... but how can we say what will happen until we take that step towards the unknown?

We have played safe for too long. Despite our efforts to keep campuses the safest places in town, there are still rapes, kidnappings, and murders. So do we continue to do nothing?

We could.

Or we could try a little experiment.

@Hyena- Go for them sun-don't-shine places, that should give you a good ten second head start

by saying that, do you mean that where you live right now they have a class that is mandatory? Because I don't believe it is the same where I live or I just don't know about it

Canary: No no... that was my suggestion: that if we allow guns we
a. don't announce the amendment
b. require a class for anyone that has a gun

That would lessen the "I'm a dumb guy with a gun" factor.

-should students(age for concealed is 21, so only 21+) be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus

I don't think student should have guns. There has been reported that a lot of people where killed at school just because a kid brought a gun to school. I have been seeing reports about at least two victims getting shot at their school :(

-would it make it more dangerous, or more safe

More dangerous of course. How would you trust a random person bringing a gun to school?

-would you want to have a weapon on you in a situation like Virgina Tech?

Nope(this is where the police come in)

-any other points you want to make

They weren't "kids" in this case. They were full-grown adults. Were I at Virginia Tech, or any of the more recent shootings, I would have wanted some way to protect myself. If not a gun, then at least a knife. Some way to defend oneself.

-sigh-

Boy, don't I feel up against a wall.. ^^;;

College is still school to me, so I don't think you should be able to carry guns. Do they allow you to carry concealed guns to work as well? Just because someone is over 21, it doesn't mean he or she will be more responsible than a 16-year-old.

I would not want to have a gun on me, even if a situation with guns arised. I'm against guns in general. :/
