To whomever might find this journal in the future, my name is Freddie Hertz. I'm not sure what exactly is going on, I only know that I had to kill my girlfriend since she was trying to do something to me. Not sure what was wrong, but she was acting like she was rabid or something. Alright, maybe I should start at the begining.
Yesterday I went to school, as usual. I'm supposed to be graduating this month, so I have been in a pretty good mood. When I got to school, there were a bunch of cops and ambulances there. It didn't take me long to find out that the night janitor lost it in the morning when the students and staff showed up and started biting people. Thats all they would tell me, then they told me to head on home. I watched the news when I got home, found out that no one died, but a lot of people ended up in the hospital. They had to shoot the janitor though... I used to talk to him in the mornings, he was a nice guy. They said he was sick, so everyone that he had bitten had to stay in the hospital. I kept watching until they started releasing names, then they said Sara McKenley, that was my girlfriend, needless to say I jumped in my car and took off, I had to see her.
I had to wait an hour and a half before they would let me see her, they said she was in surgery for her wounds. I was freaking out pretty badly. When they finally let me in, they told me she wouldn't be able to speak, so I prepared for the worst. But when I went into the room, she was sitting up, pulling at the breathing and feeding tubes, so I started screaming for the doctor, when he finally came in he brought in a couple of orderlies. They had to hold her down, but they finally got the tubes out, that's when it got really bad. She lurched forward and clamped down on the doctors face. Long story short, the shit hit the fan, I don't really remember how I got out, but right now I am in a basement, and the infected are outside, hopefully they will back off at daybreak. Wouldn't matter if they got in anyway, I feel like a dead man already.

oooo, I think I might stay for the rest of it. I like stories, though recently all I can come up with are bits and pieces of romances >3<
So please continue and always remember the cliff hangers. Never forget the cliff hangers XD

Morning: Well, I guess I got lucky in a sense. I started hearing a bunch of screaming outside last night. I am guessing that some people tried to sneak by in the dark and the, well, things that were outside followed them and, did something. I'm still not sure if I want to know exactly what is going on, but I am going to find out one way or another because I have to go outside for food and water. It looks like this house was just finished or something, there is nothing upstairs, and I mean nothing. I would have water if I thought it was safe. Well, if I make it back with supplies, I'm going to write down anything I find out.

Nightfall: Oh god, I saw the worst thing I could have ever seen in my entire life.
I tried to go to my parents house, and they were there, only, they were eating my little brother. I don't remember to clearly what happened, all I know is that when my head cleared, I was in the neighbors house and covered in blood. But I need to keep my mind off of this shit.
I got food, grabbed a whole bunch of canned food, even dog food. I heard you can eat dog food if you need to. I got a decent amount of bottled water too, and some aspirin. This time when I got back I made a much better barricade inside at the windows and doors, and inside the door to the basement. It will be a pain in the ass to get out, but I guess it will be worth it. There are other people out there who aren't infected, I think, I saw some signs of people, other than that the entire city seems dead.
Oh, right, almost forgot. I am going to start making notes about the infected here whenever I learn something, that way if I die and someone else finds this, they can at least prepare. So far I know they are pretty slow and stupid, they don't know how to use doors or anything either. Maybe it is something like a staph infection and causes brain damage or something. But they seem like they just want to eat people, so I am voting to just stay away from them if I can. I am going to take some aspirin and try to get some sleep.

Afternoon:
Well, I slept. I slept for way too long. Just got done eating but I cant seem to keep anything down. Also found a really bad infected cut on my arm. I'm going to try to break into the hospital today, get some antibiotics. Wish me luck.
Evening:
I couldn't get into the hospital, but I managed to get into a little doctors office and found some. Also went to a supermarket and got some iodine and ointment. I hope I don't kill myself trying to treat this cut. Damn I don't know what the hell I am doing with these meds.
Night:
Well, I didn't kill myself, but that iodine hurt like hell. Slathered some of the ointment into the wound, and took a couple of those pills. Ate some chili after the pain wore off, managed to keep it down. Going to take a couple more aspirin and hope I don't sleep off an entire day again.
Notes about the infected:
Well, I saw something new. There was an infected dragging itself across the street after me. It wasn't moving very fast, but the kicker is this: it didn't have any legs and only had one arm, and it's guts were hanging out. I'm calling these things zombies. I may be right, I may be wrong, and it may sound too hollywood, but far as I can tell, they are already dead. That will make it easier to deal with the thought of killing them if I need to.

Three AM:
Alright, about half an hour ago I was awoken by a loud noise upstairs, so I carefully went up there. Found a girl with a nasty lump on her head laying on the kitchen floor, she was knocked out or something, probably a really bad concussion. Anyway, I barricaded the kitchen window again, I need to stay awake and keep watch, make sure she isn't going to go all zombie on me or something.
Morning:
The girl woke up, she isn't talking. Took me about an hour to get her to eat some soup and drink some water. I think she is in shock. Looks like I am stuck here for the day with her.
Afternoon:
Well, she still hasn't talked, but she won't stop clinging to me and freaking out whenever I try to go upstairs and check for anything or use the bathroom.
Evening:
I finally got her to calm down a bit more. She still hasn't made a single sound, but I got her to write down her name. It's Kara. She seems nice so far. We played tic tac toe for a bit, the only problem I see with this in the long term is that I won't be able to go get supplies for a while, and it's not like I grabbed a whole bunch of stuff in the first place. Dammit.

Morning:
Kara is a bit more here this morning, mentally, so I am going to risk bringing her with me to a safer spot. There is an old mill outside of town that hasn't been used in years, but it still has electricity and running water. I know that because me and some buddies used to go out there and break in to party. Man I miss the old times.
Afternoon:
Kara got us into a real great mess. She started screaming when she saw some of the zombies. That just got their attention, and the attention of every single one of them for about three blocks. Right now we are on the roof of a supermarket. And there are about three dozen in the street. I knew the girl would cause me some problems. But I already helped her some, can't just take off and ditch her now.
Nightfall:
Well, staying toward the middle of the roof seems to have worked. I had to force Kara to sit in one spot instead of trying to climb down and run in a random direction. After about twenty minutes she finally calmed down and fell asleep. She wont let me move so I am writing in the most awkward position imaginable. This feels wrong. I still love Sara, but she is dead, and this girl is vulnerable. Dammit, I just want a drink or something. Anyway, onto the facts about the zombies:
They seem to have a great sense of hearing, and they don't sleep, but they don't move so well during the day. So traveling by day seems to be the best option.

Morning: They seem so have filtered away to look for other people, Kara and I are going to make a break for it. If we die, I hope someone continues this journal so others can find it. If I do though, I want the next person that finds this, if someone does, to know who I am. My name is Freddie Hertz, My parents are Molly and Frank. I was the varsity football quarterback for our schools team. My girlfriends name was Sara, I was going to propose to her because we just found out she was pregnant. I am eighteen years old, my birthday is august twelfth. I guess that is it. I'm not to good at these, wish us luck, whoever is out there.
Evening:
My name is Kara, Freddie is hurt, bad. One of those things got a hold of me, and he got it away from me before it could do anything, but it bit him on the side. I can see his ribs. I treated the wound and bandaged it, he is sleeping now. I'm glad I am a medical student. Freddie told me to stay away from him, he is worried he will turn into one of those things. I hope he doesn't. We made it to the mill. But yeah, I will probably be writing in this in the morning.

Night:
Oh my god, Freddie lost it! I'm locked in a closet right now! He is outside the door, he just keeps growling and moaning and beating on the door! I tried to check his wounds while he was sleeping and he *The rest of the page is smeared with blood and unreadable.*
*On the next page the journal picks up with a decidedly different handwriting*
August 23rd, 2009.
Afternoon:
Well, me and my group just found this thing in a closet. I figured I may as well continue what these two poor souls were trying to do. And I feel a little bad since we had to probably shoot them on the way in, there was a whole gaggle of them walking maggot-sacks outside and in. I should probably fill in the gap that was caused by them two meeting their untimely demises here. Oh, yeah, and my name is Karl. I did away with the last name, not like it matters much anymore.
In the past couple of months we made quite a few discoveries. One, these things don't need to eat, or breathe. But they sure as hell want to eat, they want to eat us. The dammed deadheads are the dominant species now here on terra firma. In my little group we got fifty strong, but we are a bunch of old timers. At fourty five I am the youngest here. Sorry, I'm drifting topic again, and I only have a pen, so you will have to deal with my mind wandering if someone else is reading this right now. Anyway, the remnants of the military are all dead or defected, by my guess, probably eighty some percent or so of the rest of humanity is dead. No one knows what caused it, or keeps it going. Anyway, we better bury the dead and pay our respects. I'm gonna bury these two somewhere away though, cause I know their names, and I'm gonna make a third grave for Freddie boys girl, Sara, everyone deserves a grave, even if you don't know their name.

Hello again. I know it has been a few days since I wrote in this dusty book, but its a little difficult to remember to write when your trying to avoid hordes of the undead. We found a community out in the middle of nowhere. And reading back I realized that the kid never wrote down where we are, this book started in Springfield, Oregon. We are in the cascade range right now, there is a whole bunch of people up here that have built up a small town, and due to elevation and the incline of the hill, and the cold, the undead can't get to us. There is probably a couple hundred people here, not counting my men and women. They are mainly a bunch of youngsters, so we are helping them out with building better shelter, teaching them to hunt, and some basic first aid. All in all, I guess I gained a little hope after finding these kids up here. They are already talking about raiding the police stations in nearby towns for weapons though, and I fear they may do something a bit rash. I'll jot it down once I figure it out.
