Earth Day 08

We are finally ready to announce the winners! Thank you everyone for your patience.

There were nearly 900 total entries (887 to be exact), and a lot of quality. All judges said that they had a difficult time trying to choose winners.

All in all, it was an extremely successful event. We look forward to running it again next year.

Judges comments: Well the coloring on this is amazing and very cute. I like the style. The best part for me is the horn stick thing coming out of the head; it's almost 3D like.



Mascot 1st Place: Karayna



Judges comments: The coloring is well done. I like the detail that she put on the gloves.

Judges comments: I like this style, and the sunflower is amazingly done. It's colored nicely too.

Judges comments: I like how it's all drawn out, and how it fills the page well.

Judges comments: It's a different style from all the other entries, and I like the way it was colored.



Final comments: If I had it my way, I would reward everyone for all their amazing entries.

something about it: This is a dream avi I made with the nature cloak. It's the blended colors of grass, moist soil, flowers, and sunshine. ^^




Nature themed 1st Place: Caroline


something about it: This avatar was inspired by a small town where I used to live, appropriately named Pacific Grove. A perfect blend of forests and nature by the ocean.




Nature themed 2nd Place: Blondheart



something about it: I am dressed like a nature fairy. She cares about the environment and has a watch in her hair to remind us if we don't take better care of the planet our time is running out.





Nature themed 3rd Place: Majinkoz


something about it: I wanted to try and do something different. In short, I created an avi that is all black and white except for one piece (the carni hairpin) I wanted it to symbolize how nature can sometimes be destroyed and become completely lifeless, but if there is at least one seed of any kind of plant left, that life can still grow. ^^

something about it: Sporkan Nature Spirit? xD; I dunno, I just made this avatar to go with the Spork and Nature Stuff, and I decided to reuse it for Earth Day, since I think it fits the theme ^^




Best Girl With Nature Cloak: jellysundae


something about it: This has been a favourite outfit of mine for a long time. A woodland princess kind of thing, the release of the horns add another nice touch to it, so I thought I'd enter it here ^.^

I walk through the moonlit wilderness. I see a magnificent flower, in full blossom and at the peak of its beauty, with such a sweet and wonderful scent. Just like the way I see you. My beautiful flower, my moonlit white rose in the dark. With the sweet scent that reminds me of your kindness and your care. And while the flower may whither, you will always be as gorgeous and elegant as the day I fell in love with you. Your eyes will always sparkle like the stars in the sky, and your smile will outshine the moon itself

Runner up: Ferra

A golden ray of sunlight shone down upon the honeycomb and out emerged a groggy bumblebee wiping the dew of winter's sleep from his eyes. The sun kissed his cheeks as a grin spread across his face.

"Wake up everyone, it's spring!" he called excitedly and soon the whole colony was awake, rejoicing for the long-awaited change of seasons. They eagerly set off to search for the first blossoms, but met a startling revelation. "No flowers?" There's hardly anything, even the trees were leafless.

"Steve you idiot! Haven't you heard of global warming?" And they went back to sleep.

People's Choice: CK

Fifi the Faerie didn't like the usual sorts of things that faeries like.

Dancing around mushroom circles seemed very silly to her. Flowers were okay - but only if they could be used as materials for pretty clothes. She couldn't care two twigs about anything else.

But she only made the mistake of littering once. Just once.

She'd found a scrap of paper and instead of immediately binning it, Fifi tried to fold it into a hat. It didn't turn out, so she dropped it. An owl happened to see the paper fall and swooped on her position. And ate her.

Staff's Choice: Dystopia

Its family tradition for the mother to bring her daughter to the beach on the child's fourth birthday. So that's what I did.

Dented cans sat in filth. Broken wine bottles dotted the water.

"Its beautiful here, mommy. Other beaches don't smell as good."

"When your grandmother brought me, we saw a fish."

"A real fish?" She glanced at me with disbelief.

"It was dying."

"Poor fish. Will we see one? I thought they were x-stink."

"They are extinct."

She looked back to the ocean. "Its still beautiful, mommy."

To her, it truly was.

But I could remember something better.

Best Involving the Environment: Amari Tsuki

According to my father, my soul tree was born on the same day as me. It stood in a patch of woods near my house. We were babies together, and together grew taller and stronger. When I was young, he explained that we were the same being in different bodies... human to love and travel, and tree for grounding and strength.

We moved when I was a teenager and years passed before I visited again. A subdivision replaced the woods.

I know my father was just telling stories, but it certainly feels like a piece of my soul is gone.

Best Involving Animals: Blondheart

Two fluffy kitties watching the world go by through an open a window. Wishing we could chase butterflies or climb the tree where the birds perch and chirp at us. Such a big beautiful world, sun and clouds in the sky, grass and dirt to roll in! Too bad there is glass between it and us.

Ears perk up, we hear a sound. A familiar feminine voice calling our names. Sliding glass moves, opening the portal to the back yard. We can see the glorious sun warmed dirt! The afternoon lazily spent in the sun. It's good to be us!

Judges comments: This was nearly impossible to judge. There were far too many quality images. We had to debate, narrow, debate some more, narrow, and do even more debating. A lot of people really deserved a prize, but unfortunately there were only three places. Thanks to everyone for your incredible response. We'll definitely have to have more photography contests in the future.
