I guess this isn't so much as like, a Life Issue with capital letters [since most people here seem to actually need help] but I was just wondering about this.

So I've been thinking for a while that when I'm older, once I'm out of Uni and everything, I'd like to live kind of like a hermit - that is, almost entirely isolated from the outside world apart from maybe a few friends and TV/Internet/Radio to catch up on news and stuff like that. And living independently too, meaning growing my own veggies and stuff like that, maybe going to the nearest town every now and then to buy other things I need?

I mean, if I was actually going to live like this, I'd need the money to buy
1) A house/Land with enough space
2) A car [if I'm going to be pretty isolated and only go to the nearest shop maybe once a fortnight or month... I'm gonna need to know how to drive, right?]
3) The driving lessons to drive the car
4) The money to buy everything I need [eg. the veg garden, furni, the few sources of contact I'll have with the rest of the world...]
4) Anything else

But it'll have to be you know, a pretty constant source of money? So to do this and let it last the rest of my life I'd probably have to work pretty hard to *get* this money before I did everything like that. After that, I guess I could always become a kind-of artist, because I love to draw and wouldn't mind doing it for a living...

...Anyway.
- What job can I get that could actually get me that kind of money to last me?
- Would this kind of existence be *possible* at all, in our current society [as in, all over the world]? Would this be possible in the society of *any* English-speaking country? [Yes, I'm language-specific, because that's really the only language I'm fluent in at the moment...]
- If this *was* possible, would you like to live like this too?

Yes, I actually do want to live like this one day, and this isn't just speculation or something.

Please move if this is in the wrong spot, since it's not really a Life Issue as such... but I'd love some advice on this all the same.

And sorry for the text wall xD

Well, the most obvious answer is you could become a farmer. Sell your fruits, veggies, or livestock to earn your money. It would give you the land and the privacy you would want.

Wanting cable, internet and the like would mean that you would have to have an income. If you didn't care, you could very well live without one.

It is VERY possible in an English speaking country.
Also, not being a farmer, if you had marketable abilities that you could do from your own home, an online/telephone company would be possible, perhaps even enjoyable. (Sewing, fabric making, web designing, as a few examples.)

I'm surprised you would think it would think it wouldn't be possible.

Personally, I would love to be a hermit. Only money I had getting spent on books and internet access. But naw, I can't cook for shit, so it wouldn't work out. That and I hate being alone. I go crazy.

xD Yeah, now that you mention being a farmer or running your own business and everything... seems so much more do-able/possible? Hehe, thanks so much >w<

You could always just use a recipe book, I guess... if that would make it any easier for you? xD

I guess people actually do live like that now, too, since land slots[?] are pretty huge in the countryside/farm area[?] and your neighbours could be kilometres away. That would be really nice.

I'd still have a problem with getting all the money to buy the land and everything though, but that could probably be managed if I get a job first and everything..

The biggest problem I can think of would be finding a good job that lets you work from home and with little to no contact with others. An author immediately comes to mind, but that only really works if you can write. XD

Other than that, buy a plot of land in the middle of nowhere. Order your groceries off the internet... or just go into town, if you need to.

It's perfectly possible, but I imagine it would take a bit of time before you could become completely self sufficient like that. Humans are social creatures by nature. It's sort of hard to ignore society completely.

Well, farmers are actually going out of business, they are being beat by other companies and such, and make much less money now than they used to. I want to be a hermit too though : )

Um, the farmer idea works, to make it work better though, look into organic farming and live by a co op or farmers market. Then you can sell to people on a small scale, and still eeck out a living.

I lived near a commune, When I was having those thoughts I found it to be a better path, as you have people around to help you, but you are still living with out the whole "thing" of being in a city.

Everyone I have met that lives on it loves it, even the children.
