Yeah, l33t and chatspeak bugs the hell outta me too. So do people who can't type properly or are too lazy to either go over their posts for errors or use the spell checker.

I hate spelling errors when it's in my own post. I get a bit aggravated when I see spelling errors in someone else's posts but I know it's not my business to preach; however, I dislike seeing 1337 or posts written in the most horrid jibberish especially when the person turns around and types like a spelling bee champion afterward.
Woohoo run on sentences.

I once had someone give me a big and long tirade on how I spelled 'color' with 'colour'.
|
Someone went nuts at you for spelling colour with a U? ahahahaha, ignorant loser. Personally I think stuff like Colour and Flavour look better with the U :)
Good to be an Australian :)

But when it gets to the point when even a fast-reader can pick your mistakes out easily or if your stuff is incomprehensible...
The worst thing is that firefox now has a built-in spellcheck, it just works even if you don't click anything. How lazy can you possibly be?
Don't even get me started on people who do it on purpose.

I use some spelling techniques that are used from the U.K
Such as "colour" instead of color. Stuff like that.
I have a bloodline relative from there, and I guess it became a habit.

I spell color like that a lot too. It isn't a mispelling for non-us citizens but it is for me, I just happen to like the alternative spelling as it seems to have a little more umph to it.
I also have issues with the word favorite which I tend to spell as 'favourite'
there are just some words I can't spell, no matter how hard I try.
Which makes me doubly grateful for spellcheckers. I just wish my firefox would pop back into place so I wouldn't have to highlight and right click everytime I think I've mispelled something.
*sniffles* I miss my firefox so bad!

What irks me more is improper semicolon or comma usage.

Oh BOY does it irritate me. I'm normally okay with a few mistakes, too--I'm not expecting you to type PERFECTLY; you're having a casual conversation! But would it kill you to be understandable? (I also understand it if you aren't familiar with the language. Again, not expecting perfection.) Or if people decide that spelling things the U.K. way is wrong.... It makes me half-lol, half-headdesk.
*remembers being told that in an email you shouldn't use capital letters or punctuation of any sort--and being very miserable typing out said emails*
With text messaging.... Eh, I get it. At least in my experience, you can get charged if you have too many characters and need to send two messages. So in this case, I can get subbing in "u" for "you" and that sort of thing. But online? Unless it's a REALLY crazy one, they don't tend to charge you per character typed.
Chatspeak is fun/funny sometimes, especially because I don't personally SAY "laugh out loud". Lol/lulz has its own meaning now. Same for a few other terms--but using them exclusively either makes you a comic figure or a sad one.

I tend to get a bit annoyed with people who misspell things constantly. I can understand if English is not their first language, and they get some leniency for that, but one of my best friends in high school misspelled things all the time in IMs and Emails and I asked her how she managed to type and spell correctly in school papers (she was in my English class) but still spell "awfly" in IMs and Email and she said "it's easier to misspell than to try and think"
My personal opinion of her diminished quite a bit at that statement..
I will admit I am a big fan of the ellipsis (...). I was always taught in English that it is most generally used to indicate a pause in the train of thought, and I pause in my train of thought quite often to sort of map out how I'm going to phrase things, so it has become quite the habit to type in a ... while I stop to think. I'm working on cutting the habit though.

Well, I'm gonna sit on the fence for this one a bit. Although I type 'formally' as some people say, I don't mind what other people are writing, I mean, it is their post. But then again, some people do get very annoyed by this. I kinda just accept both and when I'm typing I only use minor abbreviations occasionaly, such as ppl, lol, etc. People should probably try to learn when and where it's appropriate to use the abbreveated langauge. But if they've been typing like that for a long time, I guess they can't help it and we should just learn to accept it or put up with it. I'm new to this whole thing anyway, so where do you spellcheck your thing anyway?

Yeesh, I come back to this thread to find a mini war?
To all participants, KNOCK IT OFF. This is Mene, not Gaia. We're supposed to be NICE here. To Box and Emo, I'm about to call a mod on you both. Have a nice day.
Also, to Emo, I must say that you're really not helping your own case on the intelligence point. Comebacks on the "I know you are, but what am I?" level only serve to make you look...well, stupid.
As do childish insults. *coughcough*EVERYONEINTHISFIGHT*coughcough*
So seriously. Stop it, NOW. Both of you. What good does it do to argue over the internet, anyway? It doesn't make you cool, it doesn't make you smart, it just wastes time, and it's quite unneeded in a community that is supposed to be FRIENDLY.
...and just so I'm not completely off-topic...hurling silly and childish insults over the internet! Needless to say, that's another of my online language pet peeves.
