One quick warning - I am one who enjoys blending thousands of elements into each roleplay. I feel it makes it more realistic. So if you can't have a side of comedy with your drama, or a touch of romance in your action, my roleplays will NOT be for you.
That said...I've had this little plot bunny gnawing at the back of my head for a few days now.
I have yet to make a really SUCCESSFUL RP thread on Mene, largely due to my need to have balanced sides before, or my writers' block and/or habit of thinking I've replied when I haven't...>.<; Or just the fact that no one was interested. But...I'm hoping to change that this time.
The idea I have is that this is set in a town in a small valley. Built into a hill overlooking this valley is a large illegal chemical plant. Only the employees actually know about it.
A small earthquake hits the area, and since the chemical plant isn't exactly well-built, it collapses...and as it's collapsing, various chemicals mix, causing a huge explosion, and a cloud of strange gas descends on the town.
As a result of contact with the gas, many of the once "normal" residents of the town begin developing strange mutations. In many cases, these could probably be considered supernatural powers...if the people who had them could control them!
Naturally, this would deal a bit with the people trying to learn to control their new powers...but I also have a few ideas for a deeper plot. I'd like some input on what would sound the best...or if all should be used in some way.
- Some people may be having very...undesirable reactions to the exposure. Cures may need to be found for them.
- People from the chemical plant would likely want to do anything to keep their existence from becoming known to the world - up to and including abducting or killing everyone who was exposed to the gas cloud and blaming the disappearances/deaths on the earthquake somehow.
- The gas cloud may have some other effect that isn't visible immediately - perhaps a strange psychological effect that varies from person to person? I'm not really sure what it might be, really - so if you have any ideas, please speak up.
I'd just like a little feedback on this one; maybe a few suggestions. Let me know if you'd be willing to join something like this!

Ooooh, that sounds good to me!
It reminds me a bit of X-Men, but not so much so that it's a turnoff.
I'd be interesting in fleshing out the plot. Maybe some people would like to capture the mutants and find out what substance and/or circumstances made them mutate? If you could find a way to harvest it safely, it could make for a good bio-weapon.
So... black-market arms dealers would be interested too, i suppose.

*_* I like the plot idea. For some reason it reminds me of Supernaturalists, love that book and I find it really interesting. I also agree with Lantern Fish about the people wanting to capture the mutants thing. Unfortunately I don't have any ideas right now, but I'll try to think about it.

Sorry for not replying sooner; I've been working on some of the details a bit, and I didn't really know if I wanted to say anything just yet.
Anyway...what I've been thinking for the mutations is something along the lines of abilities that involve altering the person's own physical structure in some way - which could really take any form; someone might be able to lower their body weight/density to the extent that they would be able to fly, another person might be able to shapeshift, another might be able to fuse their body with things around them, for a few examples. Part of the reason for this is because it makes the most sense to me...and part of the reason is because I think it could cause some very interesting issues at the early stage when people are just learning to control it. But then again...so could anything.
I'm undecided on whether I want to limit people to one ability, or let anyone have any number as long as they balance it well. "Should I trust people to balance themselves well?" is the real question here, I think.
And I'm liking the idea about people wanting to capture the mutants - it seems feasible, since 99% of the people who ended up involved probably wouldn't know that it was anything that had to be kept secret - I'm getting a mental image of someone posting a video of a classmate randomly melting on their desk to YouTube or something; things like that just might call attention to the odd things going on in that town, and yeah. I can see third-party "hunters" coming into the picture like that.
What I've been trying to figure out is, how will everyone hide? Even if it doesn't affect everyone...I'd imagine some people would want to take those who WEREN'T affected for the sake of figuring out what makes some people mutate and some stay normal. Perhaps someone would start something similar to the Witness Protection Program, just...not for crime witnesses?

Hm, well I'm not sure on the limit, but I think that one or two is good enough. As for how they hide I'd suggest a witness protection program as well or maybe people could hide on their own. *shrug* I actually have a great character or rather "characters" for this RP.
