So, recently I got the idea into my head to attempt writing a short story entirely via monologue. It sounded interesting enough, as well as challenging. The following is what I have so far, and is by no means finished (neither is the title actually, so feel free to suggest better ones.)

The Interview of Doe

They say that of all the senses, smell is the one most closely linked to memory. A mere whiff of scent and one's mind races through the years, neurons firing as they think of an afternoon they didn't realize they remembered.

I've never had a sense of smell. My nose's only purposes on my face have been to breathe, and to balance my reading glasses on when the strain to my eyes becomes too great. If not for those uses my nose would be nothing more than a worthless mound of cartilage and flesh sitting on my face.

Perhaps that's why I don't remember anything.

I'm sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself. An introduction might be best.

In place of an actual name the officials have started calling me Doe. Nothing else; they wanted to give me a first name but I refused to answer to it. I don't know why but I found it terribly insulting, being called a 'John' or a 'Jane,' like something out of the black and white television shows that air in the morning hours, when most people are at work. Surely you know the ones, where the father goes to work, the mother stays home to cook and clean, and all the children are buffed and polished and squeaky clean in the way that only fake children can be. I hate those shows and I hate names that remind me of them, although I have no idea where this hate comes from. The shows are boring, certainly, but the first time I watched one I felt a surge of hatred so strong I barely kept myself from throwing the television against the wall. That was also my first experience with being sedated.

And I'm rambling again, I'm sorry. I do that a lot, I've come to find out. Where was I?

Oh yes. My name for the time being is Doe, and I've come to grow fond of it. From the pictures I've seen in books and television, deer are very graceful creatures, delicate-looking but apparently anything but. I feel honored to share a name with them. Strangely, for creatures I find so beautiful I don't have much interest in finding out a great deal of information about them. Articles about their habits bore me, and when watching nature shows I zone out on the informational narrative in favor of simply watching the creatures move. Nature doesn't seem to be something that interests me.

Humans do though, at least humans committing criminal acts do. When left to my own devices I will promptly ferret out any sort of television programming or book about criminal behavior and happily spend that time enraptured in the whys, wherefores, and what-nexts. I also seem to know more about police procedure than the average civilian. We (the officials and I) discovered that shortly after I regained consciousness, when I overheard and deciphered a police radio communication. The popular theory after that revelation was that I used to be an officer of some sort, but as inquires into the matter of missing officers has turned up no one fitting my description the idea has fallen out of favor.

The psychologist they've assigned to me thinks my fascination with crime is a result of the circumstances that led me here. Certainly the idea has merit; after all I am, apparently, the victim of attempted murder, and given that this is all we know about my life before now it wouldn't be out of the question for me to fixate on that. I will admit, murderers are the criminals who intrigue me the most. However I don't think this is the case, as my knowledge of the psychology, laws, and history behind violent crime is far too vast for this to be a recent interest. No, I believe that whoever I was, crime had been my passion for many years.

Very nicely written! Intriguing, too. I do hope that you write more of it. ^^ I'd love to read it.
I'm subscribing in case you post any more. ^^
