Do you ever put on a different accent, for whatever reason?

e.g To entertain, to jokingly make yourself dumber/smarter etc?

How good are you at doing other accents?

I speak "estuary English" which is an accent originating from London, and you'd imagine English newsreaders to have it.

The only convincing accent I can do is an accent posher than my own xD
My friend and I one lesson decided to speak "perfect" English, which is basically the Queen's English. You speak poshly, clearly and perfectly, and you would say:
"I am going" instead of "I'm going" or perhaps "I did not" instead of "I didn't".
It's fricking hard!! xD
We would slip up every 30 seconds.

Finally, you DO have an accent! Everyone who speaks has an accent! I'm talking about doing an accent different to your natural one.

I live in Texas, but thanks to being raised in ta big city my accent is more of a general american one and not too-too Southern. However, at work I have to take calls from people all over Texas, mainly in smaller towns, and so I often find myself adjusting my drawl to match theirs and make them feel more comfortable. ^ ^; I'm pretty good at it. My boyfriend always laughs at how easily and can slip in and out of talking like a 'hick', haha.

@ Ace - that's called "downward convergence" according to the experts xD I'm studying English Language at the moment, and it's all very interesting.

As in I'm talking down to them? Well.. haha, that doesn't sound good. But I guess it's not as offensive as that.

Sounds like a really interesting subject to study! I'd probably enjoy it.

@ Ace - yeah, linguists can be a bit "racist"... I guess it would be nicer to just call it 'convergence', but that's what's in my text book. >.<

I have a scottish accent, it's not too broad naturally, and I can't even understand broad Scots myself XD I pronounce lots of words properly, and people often think I'm from England D:

I have a killer English accent, because my bf is english, and I love imitating posh English people too. And a general american accent is always funny, my favourite is the Boston accent :3 I put that on whenever I answer the phone.

Japanese accent is always good for lulz with my friends 8D

@Pearl: OMGHI I haven't seen you in forever ;3;! How've you been!!

Um...My friends tell me a have an accent and I sometimes say a few words slightly different even though it does sound right. I guess they really pay attention. ^_^'
I was born in the US but my parents are from another country.
So they still can speak english but their english has a english/british slightly broken english language so they have an accent and then again sometimes if they really speak their 'language' they;'re really hard for an english american speaker to understand yet if you know the 'language' you can understand. So, I say a few words like they do although I speak English (american english).

I think they all get a crack when I say I'll ask the teacher. I say, "I'll axe the teacher". I mean to say AS-K! But pronounce like axe . >_<' I never even really caught that until they pointed that out (and my mom pointed it out. T_T). lol

My accent is pretty american. I live in Ny, but I don't have the long island or brooklyn accent, apaprently I have an 'Albany' accent. I don't hear it, nor do I really understand what sets it apart from any one else living in upstate, but apparently other Nyers can hear it. o_O

I can't fake accents worth CRAP! I'll try and try, but never really succeed.

My natural accent is an English Lancashire accent. It's not particularly strong or area specific, though, because I moved around a lot growing up.

I am quite good at putting on other accents, and other voices too, though.
I mostly put on accents because I do some of the voices for an animated series called "Wellington", and the voice I most commonly use for that is the voice of Wellington's girlfriend, which I do with quite a posh, slightly southern English accent, with a breathy voice.
I also sometimes do a Scottish accent when talking to the locals when I visit my parents in Scotland. There are a lot of people up there who are convinced I'm Scottish!

I'm from Chicago...so I got that accent I suppose.

I fall into other's accents really easily. Its actually a joke between my friends and me. We say that if someone so much as speaks a sylable in another accent, I'll instantly get stuck in it and I won't be able to turn it off. I actually got stuck in an English Accent once, man did my head hurt that day.

I got family in Texas, and their accent is so thick that half the time you can't understand them, the other half, I'm not concentrating on what they are saying since I am concentrating on me not usuing thier accent cuz if I do, I feel wierd, like they are going to think I'm mocking them, when I'm really not.

I just can't help it.

My favorites are English and Irish accents. They are so pretty.

@ Sakura- Mine come out August 14th, and I'm feeling hopeful about half of them. The other half I have a slight sense of dread. xD

edit;
@ Triss - I love the Irish accent too... I adore listening to my 3 favourite Irish comedians. I used to have an Irish orthodontist, aged 12, and I fell in love with him. xD

You mean...an accent when speaking English?

I'm Belgian, Dutch-speaking, so naturally I have an accent?

In my own language I speak a very strong dialect. So does my boyfriend, when we first met we could hardly understand each other XD

@ Sakura - This is a bit cocky, but I know I aced Psychology xD

But it's only because the essay style is SO easy, you just need to know a crap load of information. My friend and I spent hours and hours cramming it, so we should both do really well. We've only gotten As all year because our revision is so intense.

English Literature I've always been good at and I want to do at uni, but I have a sinking feeling I might not have got an A, in which case I would die/retake.

History, I'd be happy with a B. Love it to bits but not the best essay writer there.
English Language, I feel it went quite badly. I did no revision for it because it was on the same day as Psychology. Dx
I'd be very happy with AABB.

I have a bit of the local bay accent. It's just how I pronounce some words, it's not overly obvious.

But I can do a great Irish accent. XDD Most people here can.

@Pearl; I hope I've gotten A's in Computing and History, I got the prizes for those subjects so if I don't I'll look silly.
I was one mark off an A in the prelims for English and Biology, and I hope I managed to pull them up D:

Chemistry, I was one mark off a B in the prelim (B is my dream grade, I've never done chem before XD) but I think the exam went disasterously. Even the chemistry geniuses found it hard D:

AAAAB is my dream. But I think it'll be more like AABBC. D:

And I'm so glad you found psychology easy, most people in my year hated it lolol. You've probably done fine :3 Now onto sixth year lessons!
Are you leaving school or what, now?

I have a typical London-ish type of accent. I personally think my accent is quite bland and not different to others from the same place as me, but my friends say that I talk as if I have something stuck up my arse.

So yeah.

The accents I'm good at putting on are...The queen's type of English, I LOVE putting it on because it makes people laugh lool. I like putting on Irish/Scottish accents and also American accents <--I most like talking in a Southern type of accent. It's fun. Especially since my best friend came to England from Texas, and my Grandma's a Texan so everytime I go there, I get a chance to practice my Southern "Hick" accent out >D

I LOVE AMERICAN ACCENTS ON GUYS! Or thick French accents :3 :3
