The thing I find funny about Xenogears' funding being cut is that its developers were known to make fun of FFVII's dev team for taking so long. In the end, VII had more staying power, though, eh.
I actually dislike Xenogears, and like Xenosaga (well, the first episode, anyway). I had issues with Xenogears' gameplay, though I did love the art and characters; I never finished it. I think it suffered from the genre confusion that a lot of RPGs at the time had, too. Xenogears was a fantasy with sci-fi, religious, and psychological elements-- a lot to cram into one game, and none of it coherent to my satisfaction. Xenosaga is 100% space opera, a genre better suited to religious and psychological issues, in my opinion.
For what it's worth, though, I don't like the way either series turned out. Xenosaga lost focus in the second installment.
I actually remember hearing that Xenosaga bought the farm because the main imagination behind the project disowned the series or something like that.
