It all depends on the skills of the person who uses the program. Sometimes they use them for techno or something so that her singing is sort of minimal, but it's still cool.

Some people make her sound like she's drunk 8D;

And some make 3-D models to make the videos more interesting OwO

A company called Yamaha, I think? And the Vocaloid software began to get popular in a website called NicoNicoDouga (Japanese, I can't understand a thing LOL).

There are a few Vocaloids, and then some sort of spinoff characters that were fan-made to symbolize the "failed" songs XD

Kaito(male) and Meiko(female) are from the "Vocaloid 1" series, so their range is more limited and they're harder to work with.

Hatsune Miku is the first in the "Vocaloid 2" series, which is more advanced and has more range. The next to are the Kagamine twins. Len (male) and Rin (female).

The spinoffs are Yowane Haku, which is the Hatsune Miku software (but sounds a bit "drunk" or unnatural, even for a vocaloid XD). Then there's Akita Neru, which is another sort of "failed" Hatsune Miku, representing those who sort of gave up on the song they were making, or made her sound too high-pitched. Her name means something about being tired or something XD She's also an "angrier" version of Hatsune Miku XD
