Mochi really hurts your hands, I'm telling you that now. Ask Seri, I make all sorts of weird Asian goodies at college (actually the office staff knows my just by my wok...). You can make it easily by heating shiratama-ko (glutinous rice flour) and some water in the microwave until it turns into the texture of marshmallow. To pound it you can use a mortar and pestle or cover your hands in potato/corn starch and pat it out by hand (which as I already said...burns).
