Now I'm curious--does anyone know why St. Patrick's Day is celebrated? xD
St. Patrick was born as Maewyn in Wales around 385 A.D. At the age of sixteen he was kidnapped by bandits and sold into slavery in Ireland, where he lived for six years, herding sheep and developing a strong faith in God. Upon his escape to Gaul he studied in a monastery for many years, entered the priesthood and later was appointed as second bishop to Ireland—his desire was to return to Ireland and to convert the people there to the Christian faith, a tumultuous mission that lasted 30 years.

St. Patrick did manage to convert thousands of Irish to Christianity; he founded hundreds of churches and, according to lore, "drove the snakes out of Ireland," an act symbolizing the victory of the Christian faith over pagan rituals. In order to explain the idea of the holy trinity to local tribesmen, he used the three-leaf shamrock, its green color signifying renewal and the coming of spring after a long period of winter and "pagan" darkness.

Interestingly, the first St. Patrick's Day parade took place not in Ireland, but in the United States. Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City on March 17, 1762.

Nuh uh. o_o I don't even understand the origin of St. Patrick's Day.

@Mike- Are they going to raise in price, like jessyta said? D:
The artists want to raise the price, as they say that they want to give people the chance to get them while we're doing the events, then will raise in price, the prices that they were suppose to be.

I just opened Zantarni ^^;

Man: I think it is just to celebrate Saint Patrick. He drove the snakes out of Ireland (I think). I don't know how he ordained Sainthood though.

Man ~ I was just thinking that! *nodnod*

Here's what Wikipedia says:

St. Patty's Day, is the feast day which annually celebrates Saint Patrick (373-493), the patron saint of Ireland, on March 17, the day on which Saint Patrick died.

It is the Irish national holiday and one of the public holidays in the Republic of Ireland (a bank holiday in Northern Ireland); the overseas territory of Montserrat; and the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and rest of Canada it is widely celebrated, although not an official holiday.

It became a feast day in the universal church due to the influence of the Waterford-born Franciscan scholar Luke Wadding, as a member of the commission for the reform of the Breviary [1] in the early part of the 17th century.

LoL after reading it it sounds like kind of a lame reason to celebrate... this guy just converted a bunch of people to christianity. :?
Oh well it's still fun to go to the parade and get 'fershickered. xP

St. Maewyn of Wales (more popularly known as St Patrick) drove pagans out of Wales... It wasn't snakes, but that is how the legend is told.

I think there was also a section in Wikipedia that mentioned St. Patrick was really great at converting people? And the snakes thing was a metaphor? Ack, so confusing.

I might be returning to Gaia for a little while, because I just checked my gaia inbox and found a pm that sparked my intrest. One of my good friends from the freebies thread is setting up a massive joint-freebie thread featuring artists who have hung around in the Art Freebies at one time or another. I happen to recognize a lot of names on the list he gave me, and it seems like so much fun *-*

But what does St.Patricks day have to do with a colver? dx and Green? >_>;;;;

I still don't understand that "Kiss me, I'm Irish!" thing. o.o; Is it just a statement for Irish pride?

Shamrocks were used for medicinal purposes and were very important in Irish culture and Ireland is just... green. xD It's the Emerald Isle.

A massive joint-freebie art thread, eh? Well, I'm no good at art but I like looking at other people's stuff.... maybe I can find more deviant art accounts to haunt xD

I don't know where most of the stuff came from for St. Patrick's Day...

Random side note: I'm 1/4 Irish ^^;

St Patty's day is only a drinking holiday in America. Over in Ireland it's more of a family holiday.

But I didn't know Ireland was called Emerald Isle o.o <3 That's a pretty name! *files it away in a corner of his mind* I like pretty infomation and knowledge =3
