Hey, all. I'm pretty new here to the Menewsha community. But I'm hoping to make some new friends here quick, haha.
Anyways, have you guys ever heard of the book called the Hunger Games?
If you haven't, I reccommend it to you people who loves books as much as I do (and I love 'em lots. <3). It's a really great book, written by Suzanne Collins, the same author who wrote the Overlander series.
Recently, she published a second installment for the Hunger Games, called Catching Fire. I just got the book a few days ago, and haven't read much of it yet. For the people who already read it, is it any good?? Do you think it's better than the first??

Has anyone read Hunger Games and Catching Fire? I read them both this week and they blew my mind. I love them so much it is hard to express their awesomeness with mere words. I honestly don't know how I'm going to make it until the next one comes out. Anyway, I'm obsessed, so if you are also obsessed and would like to complain about the capitol, cry over Rue, or drool over Peeta with me than please, post so we can gush together:boogie:

I heard a blurb about these books on NPR not too terribly long ago and I found myself intrigue by the concept of them. They are definitely on my reading list. I think I am going to bump them up on my reading list to break up some of the other stuff I'm reading right now.
I know that it is labeled as Young Adult Sci-Fi Romance- is this really true? I mean since it was on the New York Times best selling list for so long, I would guess that it transcends that normally bland and vastly irritating genre. (In general, young adult romance makes me gag unless there is really something special about it past the underlying romance and the young adult romance isn't in center stage of the plot. (Like the Morganville Vampire series or even The Alchemist series.)
I don't want to be disappointed once I start reading them and get sucked into another idealized, sappy romance with hints of plot.

I heard that they were absolutely amazing, but I haven't seen them anywhere and I'm pretty caught up in a few other series atm.
But yeah, the book is definitely supposed to be fantastic.

They are Young adult Sci Fi Romance, but they are not what you would expect from such a stereotypical genre. The plot isn't too amazingly unique, but the twists and turns along the way, the characters, and just Suzanne Collins' writing style in general make the books amazing. I couldn't put them down. Young adult romance also makes me want to gag, lol. But in these books the romance definitely doesn't take over the whole plot. It's not sappy either, well not the book itself, one of the characters is, but it works for that character :D I don't think you'll be disappointed.

They are definitely as good as they're hyped up to be. I didn't see them anywhere either, in fact I hadn't even heard of them until my roommate shoved them down my throat, lol. But i'm starting to see them in more places, I actually saw them in Fred Meyer's the other day. Although unless you live in Oregon or Washington i'm guessing that you don't have any idea what a Fred Meyers is. lol, uh i'm rambling. Anyway, I think the general public is catching on. So they should start popping up more.

I've read both of these books. The first book, The Hunger Games seems like a futuristic dystopian version of Battle Royale. Of course, I have only seen the Battle Royale movie and not the manga or book format. I liked learning about the culture and the 'world' of the future alot, and you feel for the main characters before they are thrown into a situation where it is a controlled environment, made increasingly difficult as the days go on, and only one is meant to survive.
General consensus is the sequel to Battle Royale was horrible. However, Catching Fire, though obviously a middle book, was still very well written and did a very good job of planting the seeds for what will come next. It is more than just the lives of the kids thrown into (or in some almost psychotic cases volunteered/careered) into the mess, but the system of the future society (which takes place in the former united states after natural disasters. It is said that District 12 is in former Appalacia where they mine coal, sounds alot like southern West Virginia, if you remember the movie October Sky).
I have purchased both of these books in hardcover on the day they came out, and with no regrets for either.

omg I'm in the middle of Catching Fire right now (sadly, i have to share with my mom and two other siblings so it's hard to finish when they keep stealing it!)
I read The Hunger Games right when it first came out and i was BLOWN AWAY. These books are fantastic! My sister got so hooked on them, she recommended them to her high school book club and now they're reading them! I gave it to my mom when i was done and was like: "Read this. Now. It's fantastic!" Now she won't let me have the second book back until she's done.......*cries*

I love Hunger Games and Catching Fire!!! They are amazing, I read Catching Fire not long ago. I must admit, the Hunger Games series may be one of my favourite books. And that says a lot because I have read many, many books. I think Catching Fire is better because the drama somehow gets even more intriguing and I just couldn't put it down. If you have started it and didn't like it, please read at least half of it before you say its bad or not that good.
I totally recommend this series! And remember, read the books IN ORDER!!! 'Cause the second one will make no sense at all if you don't....So yep, this series is amazing....

I am currently reading The Hunger Games and i am enjoying it immensely! There are some of the fans that have gotten together here on Mene to try an RP based in the world! It's a first run and we're looking for more people willing to play tribute! I think we're going to try it out and see how far we can go with it but we need more players to work it out.

All I have to say about the books is: WOW. I have read several books in my short lifetime, and this series was definitely the best I have ever read. No offense to any Peeta lovers, but Gale is the best! :squee:

The first time I cracked open Hunger Games I knew after the first chapter than I wouldn't be able to put it down until I finished it. Rarely do I find a novel that has brilliant characterization and an extremely well-done, action-driven plot. I also thought that the romance was beautifully done because Katniss's emotions are portrayed so realistically. I loved that Katniss was so unsure and tentative when it came to opening herself up to Peeta.

The book is a very good and heart racing read, I wasn't able to put it down.
In many ways it's very reminscent of Lord of the Flies and Battle Royale- the story is excellant and very gripping. It has all the elements of what makes a novel very readable: action, gore, romance, conflict, rebels, oppression...
in terms of writing I wouldn't say the writing was top notch, it's very basic and doesn't really lend to anything more. What you read is what you get so theres not much use (in my opinion) of writing a literary critique of the novel :)
i've read both and I'm anticipating the next one...it's a guilty pleasure for sure and much more fun to read then the inanity that is Twilight.

I was really expecting those books to be terrible, based solely on the questionable tastes of the person who recommended them to me.
I ended up staying up until four in he morning to finish the first one.
I LOVE books, love reading, love writing, and I've NEVER done that in my life. It was just so engaging! The cliffhangers pretty much suck, though, and feel pretty contrived and HEY HEY I'M WRITING A SEQUEL BUY IIIT~!
Rue was my favorite. <3

That's amazing! I'll maybe come play because I just love the whole world and the concept and gah! *geeks out* I liked the Hunger Games a bit better I think, than Catching Fire but both of them were wonderful books. They're so dark and yet so hopeful, I can't wait for more!

This has become one of my all time favorite series! At first I didn't want anything, to do with the books I figured they were boring and weren't my type of book. However my younger sister kept nagging me to read the books, explaining the plot without spoiling anything. And finally I gave in and started out on the first book. Then by chapter one I was hooked, and couldn't put it down! The plot along with the writing style drew me in, right along with the characters who all seemed to bring something unique to the story. I also read its sequel and while at first it wasn't as good at first, it got better especially towards the end! My favorite would have to be Peeta, normally I don't like the nice guy types. But I was sold on Peeta by the time, they got into the games. I also liked Katniss once she started getting stronger. I like heroines like that who don't stay continuously weak. All in all if you haven't read it yet, then you defiantly should!!
