i'm a fiend for vampires... and i was long before the whole twilight fandom exploded and butchered the vampiric reputation. i did read the twilight saga (before it was popular) and found it amusing but i could cry about what it has done to vampires, what would bram stoker say lol
moving on from that, i want to know what vampire novels you have read and enjoyed, what ones are worth reading?
i have read twilight (as previously stated) though i don't recommend it
a few of the vampire chronicles by anne rice (excellent)
blood ties series by jennifer armountrout (romance, lots of lemon. not a bad series)
dark hunter series by sherrilynn kenyon (romance, lemon warning. my favorite series so far)
secret vampire by l.j smith (not bad)
taste of crimson by marjorie m. liu (really good)
i would also like to hear what you have to say about the books i have listed, if you have read them, let me know what you thought of them

Hm, what about Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu? It's younger than Dracula, I haven't read it but I my iPod has it so I plan to in the near future. It should be pretty good.
As for the ones you've mentioned, I've only read the Twilight series and the first vampire chronicles book(others on shelf waiting). IWTV was good and I quite like Anne Rice's style. The first Twilight was ok, on a stand alone basis it wasn't bad but as a vampire novel it was wonky.

I love Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, the best for me of any vampire book. i was OK on Twilight...good Teen book but still stereotypical for teen romance novels. Predictable and not too intriguing. I also loved Bram Stoker's Dracula. Best to read the father of the current vampire ideology.

I Love the Dark Hunter series!! X3 I love the author and her works. They're all just epic. <3 And I like how the daimons are not really vampires, since they don't really suck peoples blood, but rather the soul. And, just, the whole thing in general <333

My position on vampires is that the genre already has a lot of good work. Therefore if anyone wants to write a vampire novel they have to make it either innovative or simply do what was done before, better.
By innovative I do not mean sparkling, overemotional, whimpering sad sac vampires who fall for a female lead with no personality or personal growth for four books. I mean something like Dracula. Which created the romantic image of vampires. Before that book, vampires were essentially zombies with tusks... that's right tusks, not fangs. Totally different things.
By better than before I do not mean a sad, four book, rip off fan fic, of Buffy & Angel. Which is what Twilight is if you really think about it, and compare. I mean something like the works of Anne Rice who altered the genre once again.
To put my statement simply I like vampire books, and Twilight made me want to burn bookstores down.

Darren Shan's Cirque Du Freak series. I read the whole series back in my junior year of high school which was back in 2005-2006.

Darren Shan's Cirque Du Freak was good. I haven't finished the series yet, though. I've read Twilight and it was kinda ok. But then what I liked about it was the soppy romance.:XP
I read Taste of Crimson, and it was really good. marjorie m. liu is a great author.
I really like the Vampire academy series. Thats good. Sadly the library here doesnt have Blood Promise yet.
And because it's in the Vampire Genre, I have read some of Cross Academy. Though it's a manga and not a book... :P

I think Cirque Du Freak was definatly one of my favorites. If you're looking for a good one-shot, I'd recommend "Thirsty"by M.T. Anderson. It's a teen novel, so don't expect the most spectacular writing, but it was good at the time I read it. (about...4 or 5 years ago).

I recommend "Vamped" By. David Sosnowski. Though it is for more mature audiences, its very graphic. You might have trouble finding it, it's pretty underground! Though it is extremely well written and a charming tale.

Mum, do I love me some Sherrilyn Kenyon! Yeah, the Daimons aren't typical vampires, but they're very close. As it is, the series still deals a lot with some blood drinkers, so I let it slide. But I do love her characters and the way she weaves the story to where there really isn't a clear cut good guy and bad guy, at least until you get to Noir and Co.
I also suggest Amelia Atwater-Rhodes' vampire novels. Unlike some of the other teen vampire novels out there today, her vampires are - forgive the irony - quite realistic. They're not namby-pamby vegans nor do they sparkly. The books are quite dark, but with a hint of hope that makes em worthwhile to read. I really do suggest them.

I've got my own library going here, so I have a couple good recommends for you. Mine are: Mary Janice Davidson's Undead series, Jeanne C Stein's Anna Strong Vampire Chronicles, Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series, Brian Lumley's Necroscope series, Savannah Russe's Darkwing Chronicles, and finally J. R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Most of those are romantically inclined adult wise however, so be careful of naughty bits. The Anna Strong Vampire Chronicles and the Necroscope series are strictly horror/sci fi however. :D I have also read the Anne Rice books, as well as the Blood Ties and Dark Hunter series. I've also read the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton, which is very good, but also very dark (as well as becoming naughty a few books in). All very good reads that I enjoyed greatly.

I did read Twilight, but then after hopping back on the Anne Rice books I read back in junior high some years later (and right after I finished the last twilight book), I couldn't believe I had suffered through it. I do enjoy the Sherylyn Kenyon books though, and I'm in love with Katie McAlister; she's histerical.

I suggest a teen book called "Sweet Blood". Not exactly a typical blood-sucking "vampire" novel, but it brings some interesting theories to the entire vampire culture. But, I'd also recommend reading it if you are diabetic, as well, as it deals with those issues as well.

Let's see... Dark-Hunters... love them. Sherrilyn Kenyon is an awesome writer.
Blue Blood series by Melissa De La Cruz...
Mary Janice Davidson has an awesome series... Don't remember if the series had a name.
I want to read the sookie stackhouse novels.

Yeah, Mary Janice Davidson is hysterical. Though, I'm more enamored of her Fred the Mermaid books (I don't know if that's the actual series name, it's just what I call them).
It's not a series, but I forget to mention the Annette Curtis Klaus book Silver Kiss. It's a romance, but it's very bittersweet. One of my favorite vampire books.

'let the right one in' by john ajvide lindqvist... it has a nice mix of traditional myths as well as some new ones... i found it touched on things that we haven't really seen... like what happens when a vampire comes in without an invite, etc... i love it! it's a movie too... it's in swedish but it's fabulous! nice and gory... the way a vampire movie should be!

Well, two other good vampire series that I've read/I'm reading by L.j Smith are Dark Visions and Vampire Diaries.
Another good vampire series is Vampire Academy.

Yes agreed, though the True Blood book is called Charlaine Harris. I really want to read True Blood but I have tons of books to read first ones like Vampire Academy as well.

I've been reading the vampire novels by Charlaine Harris. True Blood is only the beginning. Sookie and Bill have quite a few adventures, it seems. I really recommend the series. The female lead is interesting, the vampires are far from perfect (every single one of them), and the adventures are pretty realistic (given that it's a world with vampires and the like.)
The last vampire romance I'd read before these was the Twilight series and the fourth book ruined vampire romance novels for me. My mom got me True Blood and made me read it over christmas break and... I like vampire romance novels again. I do think the series is that good.

I have to agree with Formidable Dusk The Anita Blake Series rocks.
I'm not really giving any spoilers when I say this: Vampires are legal. Which gives brings up all sorts of problems in an of itself. A very good read.
