Spira. Once upon a time it was a world of prosperity, sustained by an advanced civilisation based on the use of machina.

Then, one thousand years ago, Sin came. This immortal menace brought perennial destruction to the land and slowed the advance to civilisation. The teachings of Yevon offered solace to Spira's terrified people, but also forbade the use of machina. Still, most people were willing to sacrifice progress for a sense of security, and civilisation eventually came to a standtill.

Summoners emerged as Spira's only hope. They alone were able to stop Sin - if only for a little while.

Lién's father was part of the Warrior Monks. He was young and stupid, having affairs and eventually he got a woman pregnant. She didn't want it but she couldn't abort it, so Lién was born in Bevelle, never to know her mother. Her brother Jacques was born when she was four in the same situation as Lién's birth. She took it upon herself to be Jacques's mother figure. Their father had taken up drinking and became prone to verbally abusing the poor boy because of his interest in machina. When her brother came to her asking why their daddy was so mean about it, she told him it was because no Summoner had defeated Sin for good, so making machina would make Sin attack people.

They were thirteen and nine years old when their father died in a battle against Sin. Over the years, Lién came to despise her father for how he treated her brother, and she was glad he was dead. Her brother, however, had a softer heart and was very shaken by the death of their father. The night after the funeral, he told her that he wanted to become a Summoner and defeat Sin for good, so nobody would have to be hurt and so people could make machina to make their lives better.

It was at that moment Lién began her training to become a Summoner. There was no way she was going to let her brother put himself in such danger. If it came down to Jacques defeating Sin or herself defeating Sin, it was going to be her that was going to do it, not him. She began with books that were so hard for her to understand; she had to look every other word up in a dictionary. After the first year, she knew only simple Magic, barely able to light a candle with her wimpy "Fire" spell. That same year, when they were fifteen and eleven, they boarded a ship to Besaid, where Jacques planned to begin learning about being a Summoner. The ship was attacked, however, by Sin, and in the process her overzealous and vengeful brother actually swallowed a mouthful of Sin's toxin by accident. When they docked in Luca to receive medical help, she found out that he lost all his memories and became nearly schizophrenic, often experiencing strange hallucinations and a split personality reminiscent of their father. The doctors told her they didn't have the technology to help him. An afflicted sailor's wife offered to look after her brother at her home, feeling pity for the two orphans and feeling it was her duty as a nurse. Lién took up her offer and then set off to travel the world and train her mind, body, and soul in becoming a Summoner, determined to kill the thing that ruined her life so better technology could be developed and she could save Jacques.

Lién is a hardworking, determined girl. Once she sets her sights on a goal, she will stop at nothing to achieve it. Being so driven, she sometimes comes off as stubborn and downright bossy. Her patience is very fickle, sometimes fluctuating to the patience of a monk to the patience of a two-year-old. She is also very excitable; it's not easy for her to control her volume when she's angry or ecstatic. Her excitable nature comes off as outgoing and fun-loving in good situations. In bad, however, she seems like a crazy bitch.

Underneath all that is a girl who trusts way too easily and gives out too many second chances. She is very empathetic and therefore becomes attached to people much too easily, whether it be friends that come and go or boys she falls in and out of love with. Lién enjoys helping people, always willing to listen to their problems. And though she is very open with most aspects of herself, when something is bothering her, she tries to keep it to herself, opting not to worry anyone because she feels it would be selfish. Usually this results in a nice good cry while no one can see every now and again; all the pent-up anxiety gets to her after a while. All in all, she is pretty much your average person with many complications and inconsistencies... just a little more dramatic.

There's no name for the place I was born; it was on the Moonflow road, I've heard. My parents, both being Al Bhed, traveled a lot, moving from city to city to avoid hate from the Yevonites. My father and older brother did most of the fighting, and tried to teach me some combat skills as I grew older and traveled with them. I'm alright at fighting I suppose, but my real skills lie with machina. Us Al Bhed don't adhere to the machina teachings, and so I'm capable of making and repairing mechanical things. When it comes to a battle, I just toss something explosive I've made up into the field and be done with it.

Back to my history, though - I'm like that, I get distracted quite easily. My parents, when my mother became pregnant again, wanted to settle down somewhere. But, where could we go? Al Bhed are rarely accepted in small villages. For this reason we decided to live in Luca. People are more relaxed, more accepting. There was a small community of Al Bhed that we were soon a part of, and eventually my younger sister was born. Living in Luca, there was a lot to do, so we were never bored. Me and my brother used to go out and play blitzball at the water, or take lessons in the stadium. I'm not that good, but I can play.

But then, as always... Sin. Sin always comes. I was about ten when it attacked Luca. My baby sister died, but that wasn't the worst. Sin's toxin made my parent's forget about me and my brother, forget almost everything. I think they forgot about each other. In all honesty, I have no idea what happened to them. But the Al Bhed community was blamed for the attack, the Yevonites said that we were responsible for not adhering to the teachings. They didn't even seem to care that we had lost just as much as they had. So me and my brother ran away.

Those four or five years are actually a blur to me. My brother, strong for his age, couldn't cope with all the fiends. There were times when he and I were crawling our way through Spira; I remember huge plains, freezing cold... but it all blurs together. The Al Bhed inns around Spira helped us, sent us in the right direction. But where could we go? We eventually found ourselves at Luca again, and after so many years, no one turned us away. We lived there again. After all that toughening up, me and my brother actually made good guardians. So here I am, travelling to Besaid, ready to travel the world once more.

I think I'm a good person despite what I went through. I don't hate the Yevonites, I just think that some of them can be unfair. Having experienced being judged myself, I don't judge people before I get to know them. I'm a forgiving and generous person, and I don't believe in conflict. I've taken up the pilgrimage because I want to see it all with my own eyes; I want to find out more about Sin, because as an Al Bhed I don't believe that Sin is here because of machina. I'm fun and light-hearted on the outside, and that's how I want to be. I don't particularly like to talk about myself, and I hate attention, so you'll usually find me laughing with close friends.

All about me
Sweet, spacey Saya lived in Kilika with her mother and father as the oldest of her 6 siblings. Her father favored her. He was a fisherman and taught her how to clean, cook fish and fight off the monsters from the forest at an early age to help with the family. He would often tell her and the other kids stories of other lands and sea adventures and promised them they could come when they were old enough.

Things were going well till her teen years, around the time her last two siblings were born(they were 2 twin boys, Bato and Koda). While on a fishing trip her father's ship was attacked by Sin spawn and was taken down. Her mother, bereft of her true love and in despair, went to the temple and refused to come home. Her mother became a devout yevonite who hardly paid attention to her children, and at 17 Saya became head of the family. Sure, it was cramped in the house, but she never regretted a single time spent with her family.

She decided to go on this pilgrimage for a lot of things: to see the world that her father wanted her to see, to pick up souvenirs along the way for her siblings, and you'd think that her biggest reason for the pilgrimage would be revenge for her father, but she really wanted Sin to die so things like that wouldn't happen to other people, so she didn't have to see more people like her mother.

Saya's personality is very sweet and excitable. Once she gets to know you, she treats you as part of her family, which means there will be touching involved, wether it be pats on the back or hugs. She hates when people fight and will always try to appease everyone when trying to come to a decision. Saya also tends to space out and daydream at random times, which does get kind of annoying. Also; hope you don't mind stories, because she's got a lot of them! Mostly about her family back home.

When she gets in a battle, however, she does a complete 180. She becomes the scariest chick around, ready to protect the people she cares about with all she's worth! she's like a mother chocobo, pretty to look at, but mess with her chicks and she'll peck your eyes out! She wields an axe, and has a special 'pierce' ability that cuts with through thick enemies.

All about me

I never knew my parents... I don't even know what happened to them. All I remember is being raised by numerous people. Some would pass me off as soon as possible, and some would keep me for longer periods of time. I remember coldness, and I remember warmth. I remember being beaten, and I remember never being touched, not even with affection. I do not remember ever forming a lasting attachment with anyone. I ran away from my last “home,” from an old woman who had wanted children but was not prepared for the responsibility, when I was sixteen. As far as I know, she never tried to search for me.

My constant companion has been music. Music does not judge. Music does not betray, or leave. It just is, expressive and constant. It was because of music that I chose my current occupation; I am a wandering musician. I picked up a violin sometime during my life of being passed from home to home, and I have never let it leave my sight. I now play my violin and sing for food and board, and I never stay in one place for very long. Though this lifestyle does get lonely at times, I am used to the unpredictability that naturally comes with it. My music can also defend. At times when I must fight, whether monster or robber, my violin and my voice are much greater weapons than my fists could ever be.

Sin is horrible. I know that. I have both heard of and seen the effects of Sin’s wrath upon people. Homes destroyed. Lives extinguished. Adult minds reduced to the thought processing of children. Loved ones forgotten. I have sung dirges for those in mourning and fiddled jigs for those recovering. I have never personally been a victim of Sin. But having seen the aftermath of his coming with my own eyes, I know just how devastating his reign of death and pain and terror is to all of Spira.

I have taught myself not to immediately put my trust in other people. This is not because I consider people to be untrustworthy; it is because trust usually means some sort of personal attachment, and attachment is something that I have never been able to afford before I must leave elsewhere. I may seem cold at first, and depending on who I am interacting with, it may take me a while to "warm up" to others. Though people may sometimes distrust me because of this, I consider myself to be an honest person. I often take refuge in my music, sometimes at seemingly inappropriate times.

Twenty years ago, with little celebration, Roark came screaming into this world. Why the lack of joy during such a wonderful event? Timing, sadly, was quite bad. Sin had struck the tiny island of Besaid just as his mother was in the final stages of labor. And so, through the wreck and ravage of the town, Roark was left alone in the rubble, screaming at the top of his lungs. The remaining men of the village torn through the debris, searching for survivors, to aid the wounded. It was a visiting female Ronso that found Roark, all alone in the tattered edge of town. Her motherly instincts awoke with pain at the sight of the helpless, abandoned infant with fire-orange hair. Bundling up the small tot, the pair made to Mt. Gagazet.

Raised on the bitterly cold mountain, Roark often felt the pains of solidarity as an outsider. Sure, he played with the children Ronso, but was often teased for his weakness and lack of horn. Gradually, because of his interest in protecting himself and his weakness, the flame haired boy began to study magic. His adoptive mother encouraged the choice, and in fact crafted the spear that he carries as a staff. Besides, what else did a lonesome boy trapped on a mountain have to do?

He trained and studied day after day, honing his skills as a black mage and handling the spear.

Several years passed.

When he was seventeen, a Summoner and his guardians passed through the tiny village on Mt. Gagazet during their pilgrimage, enlightening Roark's mind with a sense of adventure, freedom, and battle. He could use his ability to help battle Sin? The thought entranced him, the idea of his unique strength being useful! Having spent a few days with the group, Roark began talking of leaving the village. The summoner was long gone by then, but Roark had wild dreams of finding him, catching up and joining as a guardian.

After a tearful goodbye from his adoptive mother, Roark set forward, coming down from the mountain towards Bevelle. After crossing through the Calm lands and spending many months hoofing it to Bevelle, Roark discovered a heartbreaking truth.

The summoner had failed. He and his guardians had met a bitter demise in their battle against Sin. Wracked with despair, Roark could not return home after having set forward with such high hopes. Full of shame and misery, he began to wander all over Spira, living on the streets like an urchin from day to day. He stole when he was hungry or in need, or occasionally took odd jobs to make a little money to survive on. Life would be full of hardships for the young man, as they always were, and during the past three years of nomadic living, he found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Another attack from Sin just off the coast of Bikanel Island destroyed one of his eyes.

Now half blind, he carries on, with a small underlying sense of bitterness in his heart as he roams about Spira, looking for something he can never quite find, peace. Instead of finding it, or realizing that is what he's craving, he lives in the moment, selfishly only thinking of his wants. If one met him, they would not see the underlying darkness of his heart, but merely a silly playboy and an unabashed flirt with only one thing on his mind: a good time.

"After all, we might all day tomorrow, eh?"

I am one of the few who have never met their parents and have known of a true family, nor do I have a desire to find what it would be like now. It’s idiotic. I was left to grow up within an orphanage at the age of three… weeks old. According to my files, my parents were killed within an attack of Sin, but I know better. I’ve gained access to restricted documents about myself, and uncovered the truth that my parents just didn’t want me. But this is not a sob story for you all to feel pity for me.

As stated earlier, I was raised within an orphanage in Luca. I wasn’t exactly a social individual while growing up, so in turn I didn’t have many friends, regardless of the fact that there were over 30 orphans in the home. While most of them went wild for blitzball, I instead enjoyed reading my books within the library. That is where I flourished. I would read, and read, until there was nothing left to read that was new. This event happened when I was twelve. It was not very enjoyable to discover that there was nothing new at home, so I instead began to travel around the city in search of anything.

That was when I met them, only just one time, but that’s all it takes. I saw the summoner and his guardians walking through the streets of Luca. It was breathtaking. No, not the summoner, but one of the guardians. She was walking in the back of the group, and was surprisingly doing it very well considering her nose was in a book. I know I shouldn’t have done what I did, but I was young and stupid at the time. I followed them. My curiosity had gotten the best of me.Needless to say, I didn’t get far before I had gotten caught; though it was far enough away that I wasn’t able to return back to Luca until the morning. I felt bad about making the summoner stop his pilgrimage, but yet at the same time I was excited to be able to speak with this woman. Most would think that you would want to speak to the summoner, he even thought so himself, but I didn’t. I was curious about who this woman was, why she was a guardian if she didn’t look that strong. By the way, I later found out that her name was Sivana.
She explained to me that her purpose within the group was not as a physical fighter, but more of a protector for the group. She told me that she was a white mage traveling with the summoner. She explained that a white mage would use healing spells, protecting spells, and spells that would make her allies much stronger. She was a major asset to her team. And well, me being young, I was silly and asked her to show me her making a shield spell, which she did. I was mesmerized with how her hands moved fluidly before the spell was casted. I told her that it was a pretty attack, but she surprised me with her answer.

She explained to me the seriousness of the situation if her team did not have her. Her part was important, as was everyone else’s part. She explained that the pilgrimage was not a playful, fun time. It was hard work, and the likelihood of one of your comrades being killed was high if you were not taking the situation as serious as you should. She stated this, yet she herself had her guard down during our discussion, that we did not notice the group of fiends coming upon the camp.
We were ambushed, and nearly killed before Sivana used a powerful healing spell that raised her teams’ spirits and gave them strength. But, she did not see the fiend coming to attack her from behind. I did not want her to be harmed in any way, so I did the first thing that came to my mind. My hands mimicked the way that Sivana had shown me, and I created a shield to protect her from behind.

At that time, I did not understand what made Sivana so concerned that I was able to do that, but I understand it now. You see the ability to learn a spell after seeing it only one time is a trait of a very powerful mage, and these mages are rare. They are called “Blue Mage”, and only a few are ever located, let alone trained. Instead of sending me back to Lucas, Sivana sent me to Bevelle. It was probably the best thing that ever happened to me.
In Bevelle, I studied at an advance university, studying the use of magic, both black and white. Though I came to realize, I could not just easily read up on a magic and learn it, I would need to literally see it before I could learn it. Such is the life of a Blue Mage, but I did not wish to focus my learning only on just magic. I’ve witnessed a few times the difference of being a magic user, and being a physical fighter. Sure, with magic you have the upper hand at a distance, but when someone comes in close, you’ll most surely be killed. That is why I also studied the art of using a blade; to better myself.
I was twenty-one when I graduated second within my class, and ventured out to locate my old friend, Sivana. I was deeply saddened to find out that she had been killed during the pilgrimage, but also infuriated when I learned how. There was a new team member who was not following the rules, and was seeing the pilgrimage as a fun adventure. That team member was still alive though, but at the cost of Sivana’s own life when she saved him. So, because of him, my dear friend is no longer here.

That lesson learned, I vowed to never take any job lightly; ever. And I will yell at anyone who daresay that I am foolish to be serious. I may seem cold, but at least you'll all still be a live when we're done.

This will really piss you off, but please curve the corners of your pictures by going here, uploading the picture in question, going to 'create', 'frames', and choosing 'rounded corners'. Have a play with everything else, too; you can make things look so much nicer.
It seems a lot to ask, but I put a lot of effort into this roleplay, and I expect there to be effort in return. Characters, as there aren't many and this is a long-term roleplay, should be well thought out with interesting backgrounds. You don't necessarily have to show all of this in the profile, but there should be some depth to them shown in the roleplay.
Send in reserves before you send in profiles! I don't want anyone putting loads of effort into a profile for nothing.

Okay, so firstly, yay, someone's reserved the summoner's spot.

Secondly, this is an idea I want to put out to people in the roleplay: before we start, I think that we should read each character's bio, and establish links between characters. Some of them should know each other from a while back, others from just joining the pilgrimage. We could have someone who doesn't know any of the party; they can join in Besaid, which is where we're starting. I think this would make things more interesting and give the characters and their relationships more depth.

What do you guys think?

I just submitted my app. I hope it's not too bad... I didn't want her to be in a long line of Summoners 'cause that's overdone, and I kind of wanted her to have a personal reason for wanting to be a Summoner besides just wanting to help the world. xD; Woot? Lol feel free to tell me if I need to change it... I'm sure I can cook something else up if need be. xD

Well, obviously a few should, but if you think about FFX, Tidus they just 'found' and he ended up a guardian for the simple reason he was travelling with them. Auron was a friend of Tidus' (obviously they knew of Auron, but if he hadn't have had that link with Tidus he probably wouldn't have joined the pilgrimage), and Rikku, whilst being Yuna's cousin, didn't become a guardian until the Moonflow.

So, what I mean is, perhaps we could have a pair of siblings within the party, someone who's known the Summoner for a long time, someone who they meet in Besaid who tags along for reasons of their own, and ends up becoming a guardian... you get the idea? I think it would also be interesting if there was an established couple or love triangle. That way it's more realistic in that, the characters' relationships aren't just beginning, they're already established and we can work on them through events in the roleplay. (:

Also I completely agree on the thing about the characters having established relationships prior to the roleplay's events. Looking at both of the profiles already up, Lién could have met Callie or Saya on her travels while training and befriended them or something. Hm~ thoughts?

Sounds good to me! I would almost like to start an rp based on how they meet =) But that would be off-topic, huh? XD We could always start a prp to do it...

But I was thinking maybe Lien (not sure how to do that accent thing :/ Gonna have to learn that.) had to go to Kilika temple to train, and Saya was paid to help get her through the forest?

And for Callie, maybe when her and her brother were traveling Saya offered them food and shelter for the night? (you can even make them have a bad relationship, like she saw one of them playing with machinna and she asked them to leave, because of Saya's fear of machinna)

On a Mac, you press option+e to get the ´ thing, and then after it comes up you immediately type the e in so you get é. :3

As for that idea, that totally works. Most likely Lién stopped by her home randomly, just looking for a random house to get a homecooked meal in. After agreeing to pay for the meal she was invited in, and over her lunch she offered to pay Saya to guide her through the forest and such. I think they might kinda bond 'cause Saya seems to really care for her siblings and so does Lién. :3

I'm ridiculously excited about this roleplay.

For those who don't have a mac, the é can be made with an ALT code.
Basically, hold down ALT, and put in on the number pad (PAD, not the ones along the top) 0233. Enable num lock to do this.
And that should get that certain character.
If you mess around with other numbers I've come out with japanese signs and things like that.

Unfortunately, certain laptops (eg mine) don't have a numpad. So I'll be copying and pasting. xD


Anyway, whilst we're waiting for all the profiles to come in, I thought I'd edit the post underneath the skeleton one in this thread and put info about us roleplayers in there? So we get to know each other a little better.
