Just lately I've been pretty fed up of the music currently in the charts and I just want to find something new.

But I have no idea where to start or where to look or anything. I guess I'm in the process of trying to find myself and build my own identity, and quite frankly I don't want any of it to involve chart music. :P

So, how do you find music? Any tips for me?

Fuse, pure volume, Myspace, Facebook, Jango, Yahoo radio, my exhusband, people in the music industry, friends. I'm really into music so it kind of comes from all over for me. If someone mentions a band or person that I never heard of I have to go look them up.

From friends or Pandora radio. It's free online and basically forces you to listen to new music. If you type in, say, Bjork it'll come up with music like Bjork. If you don't like a song a song you can make sure it doesn't get played again and with enough thumbs down it'll figure out what it is (generally) about the songs you don't like. They call it a "Music Genome" project and it's pretty cool!

Although if you like what they're playing and you don't want it to change you have to have to make sure not to thumb anything up either. I learned that the hard way. =\

Last.fm is great for similar artists. Some other good resources are huge online music communities, like Spill It Now and what.CD.

I scour the web! And if I find someone I am interested on the web, then I begin my search in local mom and pop record shops.

Very rarely from friends, most often from metal shows. You meet lots of bands and fellow fans and get great shit.

I search for a band I really like and than find from the 'similar artist' tags new bands.
Also, in Wiki you can open a genre tab and it'll give you all the band of that genre, than you just pick one that you like their name ^^
it works for me ^.^

@ kuro: I just did that with Death Cab for Cutie and discovered a whole bunch of great indie bands that have the same tone. I wish I would have thought of it before!

grooveshark.com is a pretty cool place to find and listen to music. it's like a music player and you can search for artist that you like. if you have the radio turned on , it will suggest new music for you. it's kind of like pandora, except i think grooveshark is better.

myspace, blogs, magazines mostly. Lately I've been totally addicted to spotify even tho it annoys me that they don't have everything. But usually when I'm 'discovering' I combine diffrent ways. Like I hear a song on spotify then I check it out on myspace or whatever.
Well I definetly recommend spotify (or other music streamer) then you can listen to bands/artist similar to bands you already like and find something new (hopefully) ^^

Youtube or friends.

Most of the time I'd go to someone's profile (gaia when I was active, IMVU, tumblr) and I'd hear something then search for it on Youtube. Or last.fm.

How I find songs that I've never heard before - Listening to the radio/looking up random AMVs on YouTube. ^^ Pretty simple, but practical.
