Napoleon Bonaparte, Julius Caesar, Adolf Hitler; all famous people in history. Why? The common answer will be that they were fearsome dictators who were ruthless and mean. While that is true, it is also true that several of them created several new inventions, bettered the life of those under them, and increased learning with the masses. Much of the world is now a republic or democracy- and we have several complaints about how things are run. So were dictators bad people? People who made a difference? People who just misused their power? What?

I personally dislike dictatorship because I like my freedoms such as right to bear arms, freedom of speech, religion, and petition, and all that other good things. However, I do think that dictators in the past have made a significant change in our world whether for the better or for worse. I mean Adolf was a very intelligent person and someone with great manipulation skills, though I may not agree with his ways I do think that he made advances in some of our world, one of them being military wise. I also think that other dictators have made advances in technological ways, war ways, and so much more... Although many dictators do not think of their people and indeed can kill off millions of their own people and feel no regret, I feel like they made advances in our world. Good or bad...

Napoleon, actually starved his whole country to fund his war, Hitler killed forty thousand of his own people (not just Jewish people, anyone who disagreed with him), and Cesar was assassinated, because well... not everyone liked him, mostly just the rich people. They didn't really better things for anyone, and after they were killed, any good they did was completely erased.
Dictatorships are generally bad for everyone involved. They're sort of the cultural reset button for countries. People start to think the government should do everything for them, and they let someone control them, and then they get screwed.
Also, every dictator ever, has either killed thousands of people, or tried to take over all of their neighbors, or both. Not to mention the ones who completely screw their country's economy, and end up with people starving.

What about how Hitler made a major highway? Or that his tests on live human subjects greatly furthered bain surgery? Napoleon stopped whipping in public work places and he made major education reforms. Which I did not learn in the classroom, I might add. A lot of the facts about the GOOD of work dictators you have to search for on the internet. Not information known to the masses. I wonder why that is...

Actually from an economist's perspective, its quite normal to have a dictator/dictatorial leader after being freed from colonialism or other forms of becoming an independent state. They are charismatic, well liked at first, corrupt and sometimes stuff up the country, and then you tend to have a more stable leader following them that leads to good things for a nation. Indonesia is the first example that comes to mind right now.
Speaking to people who lived in Germany in Hiter's time, things became good for them thanks to him giving out education and pushing the economy.
You need a strong person to unite people, even if it's just to hate you.

Um building a highway isn't exactly going to counterbalance the whole holocaust thing. I understand what you mean, but these are small drops of 'good' in a very stinky ocean of bad.

frankly it is hard to avoid doing at least one thing right while you are a leader. It doesn't make up for the bad though.

Indeed, a Dictator is better than a President in some points. As we all have learned in school, if you were even taught one, a Dictator has full control over the state from nearly every single aspect of it. He has full authority and does not need any senators who locks themselves in a room and debate endlessly. As my teacher joked, he said that the problem with our government of democracy is that once we are in the middle of war and where crucial plans are needed for the country, it will have to pass through the senate where the problem will start, the whole city has been bombed and all survivors were already enslaved, the senate were still probably debating. They're really slow.
Dictatorship kind of remind me of Ferdinand Marcos. Anybody here who knows him? He's famed here in the Philippines for implementing martial law which the military abused leading to many deaths and victims. Our country back at that time was in its worst scenario. Our economies falling, Schools closed, Activists being suppressed, Media lost its press freedom, and many more. But after a long span of time, after all of his corrupted works were revealed, historians soon started to accept that apart from his corrupted administration, he has still done a lot of things that helped improved our country particularly in infrastracture. He was also able to attract a lot of capitalist and bussinessmen here in our country as well as he achieved a lot of things that no president had ever achieved.
What I was trying to say that Dictatorship is a better government than Democracy in some point. The only problem we have is that finding a dictator who'll never abuse his power is pretty difficult and nearly impossible.

And that's why a republic is best. The leader has full power over the military, but general law is up to the citizens.

Dictator governments are total trash and dumb. It controls the people like a flock of sheep, and you have little rights or freedoms in my opinion. Also note the fact that the leader of the government can say dictator forever in most cases. So if you don't like his/her rule, tough luck.
Also the people can be subject to horrible things since they have no freedom, North Korea for example, takes random subjects for medical testing and many things are punishable by capital punishment, like just listening to south Korean radio :o!
Overall I think dictators are the most dumbest people in all of the world. They exert their power onto the people for what they think is "right" for them. They look at the sociology of a people and themselves only.
Democracy or even socialism is way better...

That's why we need a leader who is powerful enough to control the civilizations roaming with bastards. We don't really need a dictator at all, but thanks to drugs, political attachments, money, vices, and other stuffs, we become more uncivilized as each passing day. Murders and other crimes were done thanks to the influence of vices. The rich can easily buy justice and bail their way out no matter how grave their offense is, while the poor who can't to have a lawyer defend him rots in the cell. Our cities slowly turns into jungles as what G&R said in their song. We need a leader who's principle is the same as Machiavelli (check wiki if you wanna learn more, i'm don't really know a lot about it but it's just a friend of mine told me about him in his sociology class). If not, we all just need a f***king good Dictator and that's all.

(cogent friendly argument xD)
We don't need a good dictator. We have democracy.
We have laws, that people must pay repercussions when they cross them. Yes, many people get away with law breaking, but 80% get caught. And those who get away and keep breaking the law end up getting caught. Even in dictatorships people can break the law, use money for power, distribute drugs, etc...
I still believe we are all very civilized, most of everyone just looks at the bad aspects of a government when it seems it is failing.America for example displays the best democracy system yet. We are still running over 200 years strong. We stopped racial depriving amongst the blacks as well as Latin Latinos and the Chinese, we can still send our kids to school with the feeling of them being safe because our government added security, we protect our basic rights of freedom everyday, we have more local authorities then ever, you can get free lawyers and pay them off later, we are slowly but surely fixing all of our problems. people are doing just fine. It is the people that give out false hope that bring democracy down. Even the corrupted ones, we can seek out and put them down. And that is a substantial defense towards why dictatorships are bad, because the people can not do anything to change a law once it is made. We in a democracy, the mass people, especially the media, have the right to seek out and question these people. And we can see what they are trying to do! There are people out there that can see this and point there fingers at them, that is fact.
I believe when someone works hard or even becomes lucky enough to become rich, they are immediately targeted as a monster. Which isn't right at all. Just because you become rich doesn't mean you should become subject to having other peoples problems. That's their problem, not yours. You deserved the spot your in. And the rich can't bailout, as sometimes you can get jail time without bail.
Really everything is fine, we just can not panic or be scared. This is why we just need to keep our "good" democracy, not some shitty dictatorship... because we have choice and can compromise. There is no such thing as one good dictator, for the heart of one man with so much power is easily corrupted. But the hearts of many, are not.

China and South Korea has proven you don't need democracy to be effective and grow (SK wasn't entirely democratic early on when they were pushing economic growth). India also sometimes questions the efficiency of democracy and has admitted that democracy itself has made it near impossible to get anything done to help the country.
The rich get off in any type of political system.
There are pros and cons to them. True communism can never happen though (we have never had a true communist nation where the government is overthrown, an interim government steps up to set things up then step down so there is no government).
I find the US a bad example though, Switzerland is a really good example though. They have a lot of money that is distributed very well and has an very decentralised system.

I disagree, the U.S.A is a very effective at making money and growth. We also hold all the latest advancements in technology, despite what you may say about other countries this is true. Only reason we are in the hole right now is because of deficient spending and war.

Imma stop you right there and have you think.
The reason U.S. democracy isn't the greatest ever is because we can't make up our fucking minds or agree on something.
Congress isn't letting Obama do his job because they don't like him. I'm not saying dictatorships are the way to go, but I think the president should at least have some power over congresses whiny ass.
Congress started the war. It's congresses fault.
The spending? All congress.

First, we agree on things and compromise everyday.
Also I think it is best that we don't rush things, and ACTUALLY THINK THROUGH THINGS FIRST, instead of being hindsight all the time.
And lastly, if we do need to rush something, we can do it and have done it.
Democracy = fairness for everyone. And to be fair, sacrifices may be made.
And it is not just congress's fault. Others are partly to blame, though, blaming won't get us anywhere.

So you think democracy is perfect?
The ancients Greeks failed democracy the first time, what makes you think it's working now?
If everything was fair, then why don't I have a Lambo and a mansion?

I never said democracy WAS PERFECT EVER.
I just believe it is the best government we can have.
America has had a democracy now for over 200 years, I think they are pulling it off just fine.
And the reason you don't have a lambo or a mansion is because you haven't earned it yet. *fairness*

I agree with Pa-Chinko: capitalism's biggest strength is the competition. Survival instinct is the strongest pull on anything- think about it. Why do people strive for the best job? To get enough money to SURVIVE. What their definition of "enough to survive" is, that's a different story. But capitalism seems to work with that survival instinct. Fight for what you want. A lot of people might see this as cruel, but it's the way of the world. Socialism doesn't seem to work properly because of this base survival instinct. And the fact that in a mass of people, not everyone will agree on HOW to survive. Democracy? Seems it would work, because of the survival of the fitest. But it falls because people want their way or the highway. The smaller part of the majority goes off and makes their own government. Republic? I dunno, doesn't seem good. A republic seems to gradually decay. The people in power start to get greedy with that power, and the people without power grow to let those people just take the reins entirely. And the society decays.
Capitalism and Democracy seem to win by principle of survival instinct.
