Because I didn't see a topic like this in the forum, I figured why not? Lately, I've been craving praise music; you know, music by Christians for Christians, like Casting Crowns, Mercy Me, etc. In fact, I also wanted to share a song that I believe holds an amazing message. At the very least, it makes you think. ;)
So! What do you guys think? :D Do you have any songs you'd like to share? Favorite artists? Come on in and talk!
My favourite christian artists would have to be Relient K and Switchfoot. Their songs are insightful, and catchy, and manage to not put me to sleep, unlike a sad amount of christian bands.
I know what you mean. :) Some of the songs out there aren't energetic enough. I'm not saying that they're awful, just that they're not my forte. :3 I personally prefer Casting Crowns, Red, Skillet, and Thousand Foot Krutch, though Mercy Me is pretty good too.
It's extremely hard for me to find any type of Christian Music that I like. No, it's not because it's Christian... it's because almost all of it sounds the exact same. And if they're not the same style, it's the same lyrical content mixed in with what I can already get on the radio. Christian music outside of praise bands tend to have the disease of being copypaste of what we already listen to, with a few alterations... and I mean a FEW. Skillet doesn't even mention/imply God or Jesus anymore, for example.
So far, Demon Hunter, Narnia, and early Tobymac have been about the only exception to me, personally. >.<
I'm a Christian, but I don't usually like most Christian music. I've tried to listen to it before, but most of it comes across as rather unoriginal to me, and as someone who does a lot of songwriting and such myself, it really bothers me when a band's lyrics aren't particularly creative and interesting. It's not just Christian music in particular, though; I think the same thing about most popular music in general.
One Christian band that I really enjoy listening to is Theocracy, which is a Christian metal band. My favorite songs by them are "Ichthus," "Theocracy," and "The Serpent's Kiss."
I do like a few songs by Casting Crowns as well, actually.
I understand, though from my experience, the more popular bands are often quite original with their lyrics. I don't listen to every single song out there, but the message from each song seems to be unique, and they strike me in a different way. *shrugs* Have you listened to Jason Gray? I linked one of his videos up there. He's a unique artist for sure. :)
My fav Christian band is Jars of Clay. I've listened to them ever since I was a kid. There music is truly art and both challenging and understanding toward their audience.
I've never heard a Christian song that admitted so poetically and honestly that sometimes we "have no fear of drowning. It's the breathing that's taking all this work." That sometimes it's just hard to live a Christian life because there are times when "all the demons look like prophets, and [we're] living out every word they speak." At the same time they're music brings the truth of God's love such as their song "Run in the Night."
Jason Gray is pretty cool, too, though. :) His music has definitely touched my heart on more than one occasion. I've never heard the song you linked before. It's not played on any of the stations by me (at least not that I'm aware of). Anyway, it's beautiful. <3 Thanks for sharing!
I'll have to look into that now. :D You're welcome though.
Casting Crowns has sort of the same ability with their songs, though the sound of the singing probably has something to do with reactions as well. Take "I will Praise You in this Storm." It states so fully that, even when things flat-out suck in your life, He's still there watching and taking care of you.
Then there's "If We Are the Body," which is a call to action for Christians. It's basically saying that if we are the body of Christ, why do we act as we do? Why don't we minister to the lost? It's definitely a "moving" song as well, though in a different way.
I could go on, of course, but I don't really want to ramble too much.
Since you loved that one, I think you should hear "Mary Did You Know" :].
Some other favourites of mine that are, I suppose you could say, child hood songs that I've carried with me all these years, are "Shout to the Lord" and "Here I am, Lord"
