I graduated last year with a major in Secondary History Education. It is the only thing I really like to teach. I would consider math, but history is my passion. All the cool stories that publishers leave out of textbooks or all the information that is taught but isn't true when you look at back at the sources... I want to take the kids and turn their world upside down from boring to explosive awesomeness!

Haha, that is awesome. I had a history professor like that in college. It was the only history class I've ever enjoyed.
I do well in all subjects, but history is just.....a lot of memorization to me. I can see its importance, but it just doesn't interest me. That actually applies to all "social studies" type classes.

Memorization, though good, is difficult for me. I prefer stories. I figure my students might prefer stories too. Sadly I am teaching ESL in south korea so I am working just to teach them basic concepts... which needless to say are boring

Yeah, I understand that. I would do that, but.....I'm afraid to be that far away from the family with my depression.

I can appreciate that. It is really hard and I've fought loneliness and a sense of missing precious time with family.

Yeah, I had a hard enough time being an eight hour drive away from my family. And I totally am not risking being by myself for that long.

Again, understand. I am not sure how I am managing this. I have my faith I suppose. Guess that is really the only thing keeping me going. Haven't made very many friends here. It is hard to.

Faith does help a lot of people. It's just not my kind of thing. I'm a Deist, soooooo......not nearly as comforting as a god who listens to all your problems like a therapist.

Got it. I was going to be here for just a year, but that looks like it will be two instead. *sigh* good money, great experience, love the kids... but miss my family and teaching here is harder than in the states in terms of that these are ESL kids

Yeah, ESL would be super difficult. Do you speak their language or are you an immersion teacher?

I don't speak any Korean (or Hangul as they call their language) and our classes here are supposed to be immersion but really are not. They speak to each other in Korean. I feel like I have grown a bit more since coming here, but I keep waiting for the day when I return home. The only problem with that is... no jobs in the states.

Teaching jobs are difficult, but not impossible. I just have 2 friends get teaching jobs here.
Can you start applications while you're there?

I plan to. I'm monitoring and keeping an eye out on the job market. Then next spring I will start applying for jobs. I'm hoping to get a job. If I don't, then I may stay a third year. That is iffy though and it would be my last I think. My family misses me as much as I miss them. Also, if I save up the money for living expenses, my college is offering me another major for free tuition. Will go into accounting I think. Stabler job market and I am not that bad at it... in high school I was the top in my accounting class.

You could always substitute teach for the time being. Are you really wanting to stay in your home school district, or are you willing to teach anywhere in the US?

I'm willing to go almost anywhere I think. As much as I would like to be near home or to live with family or friends to save money... a job is a job. I have a darn year to find it too.

Well, keep an eye on Lubbock ISD in Texas, then. I know for a fact we have a bunch of teachers about to retire.
