MY tree from back when my son and I had our own place is about 4 feet tall and fiber-optic. it already has balls on it and a star on top. the balls and star and tips of the limbs all light up and change colors and stuff. each year I would add the decorations that my son had made in school.

BUT now that we live with my family (DAMN YOU ECONOMY! ) we help decorate their tree.

Last night my sister was telling me it never really had that feeling of Christmas because, when she was wrapping gifts, she always used scotch tape in the past and it always had this particular smell and the cheap tape we were using didn't have that smell.

I told her it would have felt MORE like Christmas for my son and I if we had put lights and garland in all of the windows, a pretty wreath on the front door, and one of those things you put on the inside of the front door that looks like a reindeer that when you shut the door a bunch of bells ring ... I miss our old place ...

It really hasn't felt like Christmas to me since my Grandmother died. She was the glue that kept our family together.
Now my family goes to my aunts house for Christmas, but I've never really felt welcomed there. She is one of the types who has the fake smile & is always trying to outdo everyone else.

I would suggest hitting one of the clearance sales if you had the money & buy her some scotch tape for the next Christmas. I have found it on sale a few times. It does have a smell to it that other tape doesn't.

Maybe during the spring you & your son can take a nice walk together & collect some wild grapevines. Then together you two can form it & will have a wreath for Christmas. To decorate it just take bits of old decorations or flower arrangements or garland. Add some ribbons or bows. I'm a pack rat so I have lots of odd bits of stuff in a box for projects like this.
Its easy to make wreaths, I've even made some out of kudzu.
Kudzu is sort of itchy to work with.

Why not decorate the window of either his room or your room with the decorations he made at school. I bet it would be pretty to have them hanging off the curtain rod.

same here. since my father's mother passed Christmas hasn't been the same. in fact, every year my dad just ... the worst was some years ago, my son was maybe 3, and my dad tried to kill himself Christmas Eve. so now every year we are trying our hardest to have a good Christmas while keeping an eye on him. thank God my son never found out!!

I love Kudzu for it's ironic attempts to take over a town in Alabama named after it! Each year they had to go out and hack it back and keep that up all through spring and fall!

I think next year I'll go ahead and (aside from buying the scotch tape) go to the woods and get some fresh pine branches and make a wreath out of those. and I think I will put up lights and decor in my son's room and mine next year ... I'm suddenly excited for next year now!
