Animals can act strangely in certain situations. They are unique in there own ways and many have their own personalities, fears, interests, and abilities. But my question for it is do you think that animals can sense things that we humans cannot?
Approaching storms, paranormal events, bad people.. What do you think? Have any stories you want to share?

As for me, I believe that they can. Animals can sense things that we cannot and our own pets even will warn us. I believe that they can sense bad weather, ghosts, evil doers, and can even tell when someone is ill or disabled in some way.

When I still lived with my parents, Chico, their pug (he was my dog when I lived there, but wasn't allowed to take him..) was lying down with me one night when he randomly did something he never had done before. He began acting very strange. He was pacing back and forth on the bed and began whining and soft barking. I thought maybe he needed to go out, but he didn't. Then he would jump off the bed and start barking in one direction of the room, jump back up on the bed, pace some more, and then jump back down and continued barking at apparently nothing. Next thing I know, this sweet and gentle dog, jumped up up the bed as fast as he could and jumped on my chest, where he laid down an began growling towards the wall as if he were protecting me. It was quite and odd experience because it was something he had never done before. Was it a mouse? Possibly, but there had been mice in the house before and he doesn't or hasn't ever taken notice to anything like that. Whatever it was, it had him spooked. It was something i couldn't see, feel, or hear. But he felt the urge to protect me all of a sudden. And let me make this clear, that dog is a coward! He is scared of everything from plastic water bottles to cardboard boxes, but he made it clear that night that he would protect me from whatever it was he was upset about. And then after that night my parents talked about how he would act upset and bark at nothing every now and then. He would pace and then randomly run to the kitchen opening and bark like crazy while growling. He doesn't constantly do it, but he does every now and then. It is just so.. odd for him to do anything like that.

Yes, I believe they can sense all that as well.

Aww! I love stories like that! It is so great that we have such great animal companions!

I have seen a lot of different stories about animals sensing things we can't, and it just adds to my belief that they can sense those things.

I don't have any stories of my own to share though. :(

Indeed so! I really find is fascinating that animals can sense such things. They can be gentle about them, or aggressive. Loyal pets will go out of their way to protect you from something you can't sense or to even warn you. You do see many stories on animals knowing a storm is approaching, or a dog saving a child's life by warning the adults. Animals are extraordinary.

A good story is this one:
A full grown gorilla that knows something is wrong with the little boy and doesn't harm him in any way. I think it is pretty amazing.

Yeah, it is really amazing.
I saw one episode of Pitbulls and Parolees, and was awed at the fact that one pit bull who was left abandoned and tied in the hot sun still managed to be friendly and playful around humans. Even after cruelty, animals can be loving.

Not an example of sensing paranormal things, but a great example of how amazing animals can be.

Indeed so! It's strange how they can be so forgiving as well. We humans make mistakes, get mad, and do to them things that should never be done to anything living and yet they always forgive and love us no matter what.

I think this is because animals are smarter than us
We've stopped listening to what nature has to tell us, because we have a false sense of security as the superior intelligence on Earth *as far as we know lol*

Cats are particularly clever.

This thread reminds me of the story of a cat named Oscar who ended up earning the nickname 'the death cat,' in some circles. He basically went around this nursing home spending time with patients just before they died, which might seem like a coincidence if it'd happened once or twice, but he did it upwards of fifty times. There's an article on it here.

In addition to this, those who have seizures are often told to go out and get a cat or a dog, and those animals can often predict when a fit is about to happen and keep them from getting up so that they might ride it out somewhere safe rather than walking about and risking serious injury when a fit strikes.

I, for one, know that just this week I found out that I hadn't gotten into a program that I desperately needed to get into in order to defer my student loans and pursue what I've been wanting to pursue for a few years now. I was on vacation, staying with folks I didn't know particularly well, and they had an arse load of rescued cats. So I get the rejection letter. it's the first time all day that I've been alone and, exhausted and bummed it hits hard. A few minutes later, I'm surrounded by cats. One on my lap, one curled up by my side, and one in front of me, and they stuck around until I was feeling better.

I don't believe in the paranormal.

But yes, other animals' senses certainly do work differently than ours do. Some animals have a better sense of sight, so they see things we don't. Some animals have a heightened sense of smell, so they can smell things we can't. It's not necessarily just the strength of the sense either; we know that some animals have completely different sorts of photoreceptors and the like, so they can see colors that the human eye can't.

With 16 phororeceptor pigments, I really want to know what the mantis shrimp sees.

I very much so believe this. Though only to an extent. While I believe that an animal can sense many things we can't, I don't think any of that is paranormal. Everything can be explained.

Likely you would notice if a person is dying that the smell in the room changes. Cats are very in tune with their senses and that cat, likely a very compassionate one, would comfort those who were passing. Cats are quite well known for coming to comfort at just the right time after all, and perhaps just before passing, the cat wanted them to be happy.

As for other senses. A lot of people forget that there aren't just the basic senses.
While there are the basics, you can also sometimes enter a room that... sometimes it will feel completely evil. No I don't believe it is haunted... but moreso I believe that human emotions can.... linger. Possibly by smell or some other form I don't know, but just as you can feel someone staring at you, or feel the hatred of someone who dislikes you in the room, I think that a human gives off a "presence" that is able to linger.

Why do i think that? Well, because animals pick up on this so often. If I'm upset and I show NONE of this to anyone around me, my cat instantly picks up on it and wants to lay with me. If I'm happier, she does this a lot less. Like today she is resting in her bed. When I'm down she will beg to rest on my lap. Making me feel wanted.

I've also had what some people call "paranormal" encounters, though I'm not really sure what they are, I do know they aren't human. Due to my heightened senses, I can notice a lot of things another person can't. So very often I'll sense someone is in the room... and yet nobody is there. I can even pinpoint the exact location at times within seconds simply by the way the air feels. Whatever that is, it is something I have noticed animals don't smell or feel... whatever that presence is I've actually found an animal will look STRAIGHT at it in sheer horror before running out of the room...

Not sure what they see, but whatever it is is definitely there if an animal is sensing it too. But given that these "things" move around, sometimes even fish dashing away without a single movement in the water, animals taking off without warning, all those show that there are definitely things the average person can't detect.

@ Whisper - I don't actually think that's true. I think it's more accurate, but while some animals can be pretty stupid, you look at the human species and a lot of us are pretty stupid too. On the other side you'll have complex animal escape artists that even humans can't outsmart. As far as I see it, I believe we are no better than animals, because we aren't that different. Some cats look both ways before crossing the street, some crows actually use US to crack their nuts.
