As for the real thing... I'm not really sure. It would be a pretty useful for defense.

What if unicorns are actually rhinos in disguise. Grey, fat unicorns.

@Pixie: In my first post, all I said was that the burden of proof was on you if you wanted to claim a thing existed. If you didn't want any further discussion on that, your reply probably shouldn't have been "Well that there is flawed". Nonetheless, my rant was a little off-topic for a thread in general discussion, so I apologize.

You don't have to prove anything since you're not making an objective claim about unicorns. If you were, it wouldn't be for my benefit that proof should be given. If you were having a serious, objective discussion with anyone who doubts the existence of unicorns, it would not be acceptable for you to say to them, "Unicorns exist because you can't prove they don't." That's my only point, and it's not very relevant, so I'm sorry it took me so many extra words to express it.

I don't crush children's dreams willy-nilly. Some dreams are worth nurturing. For example, many children dream of changing the world, perhaps by ending world hunger or war or disease, and I would nurture that dream because, even though I know it's not that simple and those things will likely never end, I also know that a positive outlook and a lot of passion and determination can a great impact. Santa and the tooth fairy, on the other hand, are just silly games that families play with their children until they get too old. How does a belief in Santa benefit a child?

And lolol yes we are going to be jolly good friends. This is actually how most of my friendships start in real life.

@Codette: Very good observation and example! It was positivism which said that if something cannot be physically observed, we can't consider it real. It actually was the emergence of atomic theory that forced positivists to either accept that some things are both real and unobservable or deny the existence of the atom. The result was logical positivism, which states that if something cannot be either (1) physically observed or (2) shown to follow logically from something which can be physically observed, then it cannot be considered real. The atom falls under the second category. We can use the atom in science because it makes sense with the rest of the physical world and helps explain other physical phenomena in the simplest, least convoluted way possible.

Vox: *bows* Thank you. I'm in love with a visual novel called Umineko No Koro Nii, which is about a witch that has a battle of wits with a mortal, and he has to disprove any magic. Devils Proof is commonly used. ^.^' Devils Proof is my excuse for almost anything. I may not believe in unicorns, but I have no proof that they do exist or like-wise do not exist. Therefore until either form is proven it is just a mystery.

The Wandering Poet: most excellent picture ^.^ made me giggle at work.

@Codette: Interesting. I must agree that questions of the metaphysical are mysteries since they cannot be proven nor disproved. However, that does not mean they don't have an answer. All objective questions have an answer even if that answer is impossible to ascertain. And if you claim that something is true, you must be able to explain why.

@Pixie: Haha no, I'm okay. Maybe some other day I will call for a duel. :P

Due to a lack of proof saying they DIDN'T exist, I still believe that anything is possible, and that they do in fact exist, somewhere....mostly the Dragons are what I believe in...but anyone who walks into my room would be able to tell you that...not to mention my screen name has a very Draconic flair to it.

So i dont see what this has to do with a unicorn
I wasn't using chimera as in the mythical creature. I was using it as a genetics term. Here is how I was using the word.

Interesting Mystic... never knew that chimeras could be like that. I was thinking the merging of 3 or more creatures or something.

No problem. I should have said in that post that it was the genetics term and not the mythological creature I was talking about. I can see how someone could get confused. ^^;

Poet: Yep! Genetics are interesting, a bit complex but interesting.

I AM a unicorn.

...well not really, it's an inside joke. It'd be kinda hard to type with hooves.

Considering how much of the fossil record we've been through and not found a single one, I don't believe they exist...on this planet. However, since they are entirely plausible, and all current indications suggest that there are infinite universes, even if the universe we live in is finite (which it may not be), mathematically speaking they MUST exist somewhere.

I also don't deny the fact that it is still possible that they do now or previously did exist on this planet. I'm just not convinced that it's TRUE.

The same goes for dragons. Actually, the fact that dragons exist through so many unrelated mythologies is part of what leads to my belief that a lot of mythology and fiction is actually people's past life memories from other worlds.
