So do I. You don't sugar coat things, or fluff anyone's ego. You tell it how it is, and that is SO refreshing now days, you know?
I often tell people to be as honest and blunt as they can with me, mostly because I can take their criticism a lot better that way. (how and why I have no clue).
And I think that's the best way I grow. Is by others who are more experienced, telling me 'You're doing it wrong. It's this way.'
I have so much respect for good, honest people like that. Like you, Xuvrette, and Maria and Hummy too XD
I only use that subway ordering style since you have your progress in one image, side by side, best for comparison. (frankly, that is one superb idea! I should do it too... instead of animating it.)
and beside, you don't seem keen to think my idea of 'working from observation real life' would be effective.
Ultimately, observation is important. The core of the point, when you learn how things works and behave, you will get to know how it becomes. :3

Regarding of critique style, I do sugar coat things.
The only thing I 'sugar coat' is the atmosphere. I can get to the same point by being meaner, or nicer(which tends to be long and beat around the bush a little). There is some point that if I don't like certain element, I sometimes choose to not mention it, especially when it is something of preference, for example, green colour (I don't like it unless it is a plant).
I am a person that 'sounds mean without using curse/awful words'. 8D
I actually take "Oh it looks gorgeous" as an insult unless the person isn't an artist...
That's basically telling me they didn't even look at it...

If I had the same tshirt, but one had a design on it, would it be alright to submit it with and without the design and it count as 1 item or 2. ;)
