I'm a poor college student who loves gaming and has no console. Thank goodness for Steam.

I currently play Star Trek Online and Lord of the Rings Online, which, despite the 'franchise' stigma, are actually really user friendly and enjoyable. I've tried WoW and a few others, but I couldn't really get into them.

Does anyone else play either of these? What other free online RPGs would you recommend? (I realize that there may be some pretty big ones I've skipped over, but I have an ancient Mac, which limits my options considerably :/ ).

One that tends to get overlooked frequently since it went F2P was Rift. Actually very very fun. I played it when it was pay to play and loved it. I only quit because all my friends stopped playing but it was a good game and deserves a look.
