What is a twin country?

Ah, I started off with an big empire, twins were born and instead of picking and dealing with potential fallout, the empire was divided into two smaller countries. So how long would it take from one country to diverge in that the two countries are no longer completely alike?

Does this question require a creative answer?

i don't think so. 500 years is a short time relatively speaking but it depends 1. what type of people are in the country and 2. why the split. if it were for social change (human rights and stuff) then the cultures would definitely grow different but if it were something like poor vs rich then i'd think less so?
also i think there's something alike in every community (at least at the basis of it all) but there would obviously be some divergence if they split at all. depends what aspect of life you're talking about, i guess?

Split was to prevent (potential) war. Like there were ten towns and twin's father, the emperor said well to prevent you two from fighting over the crown, I will give 4 towns to rule over to the younger twin and the remaining 6 to older twin.

Inheritance is determined by first born regardless of gender and I'm currently thinking older twin will be a girl (making her Empress) and younger twin a boy (making him a King). But twins are tricky since 'older' is only by a few minutes that's why Emperor decided it to do it this way.

So things like Laws and Culture should be the same at first (it's just the people who lived in those 4 towns will go to younger twin for their problems instead of older twin). Technically younger twin's kingdom still answers to older twin's kingdom (so like parent and child I suppose). Over time new laws would have been added (what might be illegal in one country might not be in the other) and of course while twins might have been close, there's no saying their grandkids or great grandkids will get along.

So I suppose a better and more accurate depiction would be, here's a big country, they made a colony just outside their borders. While the colony ultimately answers to the big country, it is ruled by a different person then the ruler of the big country. How long would it take for the colony to develop it's own culture that is similar to the big country but still different?

I guess I was modeling it after the American Revolutionary War. It's been about 400 years since then and America and England are very different cultures that started off the same. The big difference is that there wasn't a war to split them, nor an ocean separating the two. Also America was a big melting pot of cultures (making it easier to modify and develop into a different culture).

ooh omg this is for a story!! for a minute there i thought you were talking about a historical event and i was wondering how i'd never heard about this.

i was thinking about america-english split too but then also about the american civil war (which wasn't really different cultures but incredibly different viewpoints).
400 years would probably be good, maybe even less? i mean take europe for example - there's many countries next to each other but they're all different from one another. i would think if the twins originally had a good relation they'd start off extremely similar but each ruler would eventually have different ideas for how they'd want to rule and the kingdoms that have to answer to the higher kingdom (technically) would probably still feel separate and that would create a difference too.
just the sheer fact of separation would breed differences. hell, the states have differences and we're still one country.

haha. xD Yup for story. See my problem was I created the two countries and had no intention of connecting the two but then plot stuff happened and suddenly the two countries were now one big country in the past. Now then I have to figure how far back was the original split.

To be more specific, Shinrei Empire (parent country) is noticeably Japanese influenced from the language used to the style of clothing and buildings. When I created the Kingdom of Tyst, from the name of the kingdom alone it doesn't follow the similar to Japanese language design, to the design of the castle (more European in design) and clothes (but I can get away with that in that the Kingdom of Tyst is under a tyrant rule at the moment and clothing and stuff changed into more durable, simpler and cheaper stuff).

Excellent then! Will probably aim for 300-400 years then. That's easily 3-5 generations. So that makes the current Empress of Shinrei, Hotaru and Missing Prince of Tyst, Asho either second or third cousins (maybe even fourth) FAMILY TREES!
