You can't DOWNLOAD from this site, but you can listen to lots of songs for free on http://www.playlist.com
It's quite handy. ^^ But sometimes it doesn't have songs that aren't singles if the band isn't super well-known.

Project Playlist is really the best way to listen to specific songs. If you sign up you can create your own playlists too and listen to them from the site.
www.pandora.com is also good, but you can't pick which songs you are listening to.[/quote]

Limewire is free and legal.
Just go to www.limewire.com
But, I'd rather use Itunes, Even if it costs money.

Imeem.com works like Youtube in that it has music on demand. Though other users have to upload it on the site first.
There's a slew of websites out there that archive links leading to song downloads, though that's pretty much illegal. ^^;;

Limewire acually isn't legal.
But I still use it anyway.
And plus, I've got friends who's computers got viruses from LimeWire. :/
My brother downloads music from MySpace somehow.

@Aiparon-- LimeWire only gives you viruses if you're stupid about using it. Be careful about what you download, and don't use it often...
And LimeWire in itself isn't actually illegal. It's just the downloading of copyrighted material (which is probably 99% of what is downloaded) that is illegal. If LimeWire were illegal, it wouldn't still be up for download. XD
(Oh, and some artists offer to let you download their music off of MySpace, but you'll only find that with indie bands trying to get their music out there...)
Anyway. There is no free, legal way to download (most) music. Get either a torrent or P2P client if you want music, but be warned that downloading copyrighted material is illegal.. -cougheventhoughwealldoitanywaycough-
Project Playlist is the best way to go. They've got tons of music and you can make playlists! iMeem has recently become a piece of shit, because they made every song they didn't have a copyright on into a 30-second clip. Urgh.
