Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann is a curious anime. I saw it and thought I was going to hate it and instead it completely stole my heart!

Plot Summary: In their closed-off underground village, Kamina and Simon chafe at the limits imposed by the village elder. Yet all this will change, when Simon stumbles across a fantastic device - just as the village's peace is broken by a violent intrusion.
That summary really only hits on the first episode. Yes, Simon and Kamina live in an underground village. Kamina has big dreams of getting to the surface world, but everyone tells him he's crazy. Then one day, a giant robot comes crashing through the ceiling of their community. A girl comes down as well, fighting off the monster. She's Yoko and as she's trying to fight the monster off, Kamina keeps getting in the way. Simon drags them off to see this little mech head that he found buried in the earth. With a little drill charm that he found earlier, they are able to fire up the mech and beat the monster in the village. They also make it to the surface in the process. From there on out, it's all about learning about the surface world and how beast men in these "Ganmen" mechs come every day to try and fight with the humans.

What's best about this anime is the relationships. Kamina and Simon's brotherly affection is very touching. Kamina's constant encouragement and absolute faith in the often times cowardly Simon is very sweet. Kamina's attitude reaches out and touches everyone and spurs them into action against the Ganmen and the beast men. It really gets you pumping. From there it turns into a travel/mech story.

Anyway, for something I thought I wasn't going to like, Gurren-Lagann sure did a number on me. I'm hooked. Even after a nasty twist in episode 8, I'm still hanging in there, waiting with baited breath for the next episode. So, anybody seen it? Have I convinced anybody to want to see it?

You can see more pictures at the official Japanese site. There's also a LJ community set up for it, but if you head over there, beware of spoilers!

I'm so disappointed! No one else has seen this show! It needs more attention. I know it seems a little weird at first, but it is good and it has a nice slick colorful animation. The opening and ending songs are rock songs that really fit the overall energy of the show.

There's fanservice too... Yoko runs around in a skimpy bikini top and daisy dukes and a lot of the guys are shirtless....even Simon who is not much to look at really XD

There's so much to like about this show. I just tend to overlook silly things like plot holes >_> I really am that enamored. <3

So, it's been a month since I posted this topic. Surely someone has seen the series by now. It's too awesome to miss. It's already been licensed! ADV snapped it up 12 episodes into its run. Everybody I've introduced to the series seems to get hooked. More people should be in here discussing it! :o

Yes. I'm all caught up and it's sad. I'm so upset with Rossiu. I'm upset with a lot of people. They need to pull themselves together! I can't wait to see what happens next!

Say that three times fast. XD

Anyway, I've just gotten into watching this amazing anime. It's exciting and sad, but everything about it is awesome.
...Except for maybe the tiny mech that looks like a head with limbs.
But even that's cool. 8D

For the first episode.

{SPOILER}
It's about this kid, Simon, who lives in an underground village. He's a digger, and drills to expand the village. There's constantly earthquakes coming from aboveground, and poor Simon is scared stiff by the thought of being crushed by them. He's meek, but nice. One day, Simon finds something in the ground -a treasure- and he decides to keep it. His 'older brother' (he just tells Simon to call him that), Kamina, keeps trying to escape from the underground to see the surface world.
Simply put, one day a sort of monster attacks, Simon and Kamina go to the surface, and team up with a girl.

There's mechs, there's fighting, there's drama, and it's a really exciting thing to watch.

It's currently only subbed, though I hope that it makes it to the US (and that they don't slaughter it with horrible voice actors).

Major spoilers below~

TTGL has such a love hate relationship with me. It's so much fun in the first half of the series, and just mind numbing in the second.

You have to wonder what gainax is thinking of. I mean come on, a space ocean? Crap ending is crap, with a shit load of deaths in just one episode.
Unless it picks up in the last 3 episodes, this will be another one of gainax' flops. Aside from that, the first-pre time skip-half of the series is good fun and not as plot driven'.

Definately a good watch if you like machines with giant heads and blonde beastmen.

I wouldn't get too attatched to a character though. Major deaths are major, aniki still makes me cry whenever I see him.

{SPOILER}
Because, you know, NO ONE wants to forget Kamina ever existed.

...Except everyone who ever knew him, excluding Gurren Dan.

Gotta love the blond beastmen with butcher knives. <3

I like it for reasons no known even to me. :'D

Mm, revived dead thread. :]

TTGL is my second favorite series (well, tied for second with Baccano!). It's just so epically awesome. :'D Though, I am extremely disappointed that ADV lost the rights to Bandai; it puts its release back a few months. :[ But it's going to start showing on Sci-Fi in July, which I am extremely happy about. ^^

Oh! Thanks for reviving the thread guys! I was going to do it last night, but I got distracted ^_^;;

dessertdesiert: It is a really out there anime....really out there in the left field of Awesome! =D

iAlkemy: I'm disappointed that the release got pushed back a bit, but at least it's coming out. It was in limbo for a while there and I was worried that we might not see it! I'm wondering if having Bandai license it and having it play on the SciFi channel means we have a better chance of getting the TTGL DS game released over here. When I hopefully wondered if the game would cross the ocean, my friend was like "No way, there's not enough interest and its not even getting put on tv." But now it is, so I'm crossing my fingers.

I'm also looking forward to the movie! It looks like they're going to take an Alternate Universe approach and I'm super excited! I can't wait!

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann is so amazing! I've been watching it for quite a while now and the other day I finally got around to buyging the DvD set off eBay (Japanese with Chinese and English subs that are slightly off xD).

I *ADORE* this show to bits. I could be considered a massive fan girl. I have posters of it lining my wall, pictures galore on my computer, the official Gurren Lagann shirt, the music, the DvD, the signatures of the English voice actors, etc.

A-mazing show! If you haven't seen it, DO IT NOW.

So has everyone seen the Gurren Lagann Parallel Works music videos? Some of them are very strange, like the one about Gimmi, while others are pretty awesome. The most recent one was very alternate universe. It's different characters in similar roles to our heros. It was mentioned if the reception of the short is good, they might turn it into a full fledged anime! Awesome!

Also, they're doing a new spin-off manga! Gurren Lagann in high school! ZOMG! I really can't wait. As it is, I'm very impatient for the movie to come out. I admit, as long as it's Gurren Laganne and awesome, I'll eat it up. If they start botching it, I won't be happy, but in the meantime I'm a very excited fangirl! *Squee*!

Gurren Lagann is awesome. Amazing, even. I'm just...so disappointed with the English dub. Usually I can find positives in English and Japanese dub, so I don't discriminate against anyone, but...I was just completely let down when I heard it in English. See...the voices just sound so DULL. So LAME. There's not any enthusiasm, and it all sounds forced...and it annoys me. The only person whose voice I like is Kittan's...but...whatever. Rossieu hasn't been introduced yet, but I figure that Bosch won't let me down.

...Hopefully.

Anyway, the english voice actors really let me down--I just can't get into the series in English. Kamina is just...WRONG.

Well, anyway. I've loved this series since...well, about the same time it was near ending I got into it. I think I started watching it with English subs about a week after it ended. I...watched four episodes one day, six the next...and seventeen on the third day.

I totally have a soft spot...and can't get over the fact that he's voice by a teenage mutant ninja turtle in English. Oh, well...at least it was my FAVORITE turtle...

I only heard small clips of the English dub. I didn't really see anything too amazing about it either. Nobody really sounded right. Just another reason to buy the low key sub release adn be done with it.

I believe Kamina's dub voice was also a character from Dragonball Z. You'd think that someone who did so much yelling at his penis could actually inject some life into Kamina. Too bad. Still, I'm just glad to have it released here. Yay!

And like I said, I'm really looking forward to the movie and the new manga. *boogies*

I rarely like Shonen anime series, but Gurren Lagann is just amazing.
I actually thought Bandai did a great job on the Dub. Yoko's voice actually seems believable for her character. (and the DVD contains 10 episode on each one! : D. A great buy.) I definitely love the series. I hope they do other projects with it. Gainax has always been a great contendor for animes.

I am totally asking for these in DVD form for Christmas. ;_; We are watching in anime club currently but the urge to skip ahead and marathon the whole thing is going to overwhelm me very soon.

One of the craziest shows out there.
(: I love it! Kamina is such a badass. -drool-

It's up there with my favorites FLCL and Neon Genesis (Didn't the people who made FLCL and NGE work on TTGL? xDD)

I believe that someone associated the FLCL worked on the show.

So I've finally watched more and I'm so close to finishing the entire thing. I am excited about it. :)
