Tolkien in my opinion is one of THE best writers to ever live.
The datail makes the stories so much more 'real' and I love to 'escape' into a book. There are very few authors who can do that, make a book come alive in your mind.
I'm not sure I would want to live in 'Hobbiton Utopia" for I am tall lol, but either of the Elvan communities would be a nice place to move in ^.^
I was sadly disappointed that Tom Bombadil was left out of the movies :( he was one of my favorite non-main characters in the books, and that section of the book was very exciting to me.
I have been learning as much as I can of the Tolkien languages for a while now, and although it is not easy I still try my best.
The movies did a decent job of the books, but in my opinion the books will always be better. (Although now when I read them I picture the characters more like the movies.... which isn't all bad lol Orlando and Viggo *sigh* ^.^)
Anyways, Tolkien is/was/always will be one of THE best writers ever.

I am a huge fan and collector of Tolkien.
Has anybody read the new book?
I have yet to get my paws on it.

I adore Tolkien and what he has inspired in the fantasy realm. He was the one who really brought elves, orcs and other fabled creatures to another level that has barely been explored before. His work is truly amazing and yes wordy but hell I don't mind. I can take years reading a book if I need too. I love reading and I love details and getting into the characters more. It is something I crave for.

I loved the lord of the rings gorwing up and have read it amny tiems, but as I grew older, my view on like and books became very diffrent.

I still love his poetry though. he has a very beautifull way of writing and his poetry is not looked at enough, in my opinon. In many of the movies based on his work, his poetry is changed or taken out all together.

I got a copy of the Tolkien reader for christmas in 1994, and I still have it (though it's starting to fall apart for years of use). I'd have to say that my favorite poem from the reader is the Mewlips and the man in the moon came down too soon. The onei n the lord of the rings is there as well, and that's fine, but the other poem is hysterical.

There was a song book put out by tolkien and i think Donald Swan. They had set some of his poems and songs to music. I heard a recording of them once, and I found the music book in a lybrary. They are very difficult to play though. I wonfer if any one else had ever seen this book or heard these recordings.

Another good poem of his was Bilbo's last song at the grey heavens. They made it in a children's storybook format, with beautifull pictures and all, but it is such a sad poem, I almost always cry wen I read it. One of the BBC radio productions set it to music and it's very beautifull, but haunting.

My favorite book(s), personally is/are the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Who else likes the books by J.R.R. Tolkien, such as the Silmarillion, The Hobbit, LotR, ect.?

To be completely honest, I find Tolkien really boring. I've always says that the book is always better than the movie- except for Lord of The Rings. In my opinion, the LOTR movies far surpass the LOTR books.

I tried to read Fellowship of the Ring and I fell asleep.

@Hypomanic Poet:
Tolkien is an acquired taste, without a doubt.

I just hope you don't get discouraged with his writing. If the Trilogy doesn't interest you, maybe try picking up the Unfinished Tales, or the Children of Húrin? You might find those stories a bit more engaging.

The Hobbit

One of the greatest books ever.
I love the Hobbit. I have since I first read it 2 years ago. I tried to read it in elemetary school, and put it down after the first page. I was one of those kids who wanted to be all cool and thought kids who read a lot were nerds, but I was always reading in private. Seriously, by fourth grade, I had an elevnth grade reading level. But in middle school, I became the biggest nerd ever with always reading. I got detention for reading, so I went to detention... And read. I'm the kid who gets friday twilight so I can have two hours of uninterupted reaing time. So I finally read the Hobbit freshman year of highschool. I've loved Tolkein ever since. Speaking of which, there's a Lord of the Rings marathon on tv..... Why the HECK am I here instead of there!!!

LOL
I've only read The Hobbit and the first chapter of Lord of the Rings. I'd rather watch the movies for the LoTR and The Hobbit was pretty good... I don't really remember the book too well since I read it a long time ago... I should find that book sometime and read it. ^^

Lord of the Rings was too annoying to read in my taste. ^^

I think that having the books read out loud to me made a difference. My mom read LOTR to me when I was in fourth grade, and I was able to understand it, while I wasn't able to understand books written on the same level that I just read on my own. That said, as soon as she stopped reading for the night, I'd pick up the book and read ahead. xD

If you like the story but have difficulty reading it, maybe try listening to a recorded version, or having someone read it out loud to you.

While I agree for the most part about the details, I find Tom Bombadil a total waste of time and always skip over that part when I'm reading the books.

I started reading Lord of the Rings after I have seen the Fellowship of the Ring.
My father just loves Tolkien, and I got interested in the book.
It took me a half year to finish it 0.o
Earlier I tried to read The Hobbit, but I thought it was boring. I do like the fairytales of Tolkien!

In April this year I bought The Children of Húrin for my fathers birthday, but I just had to read it fist (I also love the art of Alan Lee), and I finished this book within two weeks.
After that I read The Hobbit (again), and I loved it. A while ago I bought Lord of the Rings and I think this time it will not take 6 months before I finish it.

I read and adored The Hobbit, but I got bored and stopped reading The Lord of the Rings trilogy when I had gotten about a third a way through Return of the King. Perhaps I was just to young at the time; maybe I should give it another try.
