So I've been looking around for either some free story writing software or story writing software that has a free trail. Do any of you have suggestions of some good software that I should check out and consider downloading?

National Novel Writing Month

if you look on there they have a couple of programmes for Nano participants. Im not sure otherwise though, i just use open office 3.0 the free version you can download ^_^

There is probably an updated version by now though xD

Here - check these out.

If you just look around on the NaNo site you'd find this page -- through the sponsors of NaNo.... I don't know what kind of computer you have so I can't tell you what I'd get as the one that I get I think is just for Mac.

Haha, maybe you should post that page on the first page?

Ugh, I need to get up as I have printing to do before class... but I don't wanna get up... my bed is warm.

Scrivner does work for PC.
I know, as I bought it for PC last year.

If you look hard enough on that page, or go to the pages - click on the pictures - you'll see that not all are Mac.
All it takes is a bit more work and looking.

Me personally - I'm taking advantage of the free NaNo trial of Storyist.

Definitely helps that I have a Mac that my parents bought me this summer, so I don't have as much of a limit on what works and what doesn't.

It would be nice if some of the trials were longer.

At least the trials last for the whole month of November... At least that is what they are... seeing as they are trials and you're not having to pay... and that they are trials through the sponsors of NaNo. I get why they're only in November. I don't see any reason to complain about them being too short. At least most go into November... and I can download Storyist, and it works through December... so honestly, they say it's a month, it's actually more than a month...

What I can say, is I'm glad that I don't have to pay until I know that I want it.... Which is a good thing seeing as I'm a broke college student.

Well I wasn't talking about those. I was referring to some others that I was looking at that only give you a 15 or 20 day trial instead of a 30 day one.

Wow which kinda software give trial less than a month? O_O
All big software like Adobe Autodesk Microsoft gave one month trial...

At least they give you a trial period so you can see if you really want to spend the money on it or not. Better than spending money on it and then finding out that you don't like it after spending money on it....

I forget which one it was that I was looking at. When I seen that it had such a short trail and that it was Mac only I didn't bother looking at it.

That's true, but I want a trail that is going to be long enough for me to actually use the software and see if I like it or not.

And 10 to 20 days isn't enough days for you to give it a trial run to see if it'll work or not?

Anyways, I need to get going - I have to go and do some printing before my class at 11 am

The one thing that I am loving about Storyist is the fact that it has a timer, and a word count and all that, to keep you on track for writing.

Not totally here -- seeing as class starts in 10 minutes.

XD
I am distracted with finding Scrivener vs Storyist. XD
I am PC user, so I can never try Storyist, but looking at their website feature glance, it looks really similar. hmm...

So I went searching Scrivener vs Storyist to find out.
Rather fun to see the war between these 2.

I think I'm probably going to try out Scrivener. Right now I'm trying out Storybook which is freeware.

I'm basically looking for something to help keep organized. Something that will allow me to make basic to advance character profiles, information on places, information on special items, and other stuff for my story.

I saw a few more software, Storymill and the Bean, unfortunately all Mac... *sighs*

Do try Scrivener for the wants you mentioned. Organize.

In short, Scrivener have 4 main frames.
top horizontal : all standard commands and actions. you can customize tool bar.
left vertical : ORGANIZATION heaven. you can folder, sub, sub-sub, sub-sub-sub...
CENTRE : your writing screen.
Right Vertical : data, info, notes, sypnosis.

For extra. You can cross reference in within the documents, set keyword to search, outline view, corkboard view, and the awesome WORD COUNT. and it is LIVE word count. My old Word 2003 don't even have one...
The Word count also let you set targets for both project goal and session goal.

Mostly of what I mention is similar to Storyist.
PS. I forgot to mention, it has a Name generator... good toy.

I just went over to Storybook, and it look rather interesting as well. Why don't you settle on that? Storybook.
