Customizing your dolls can be fun, though. Not that I can really talk, yet. ::laughs:: I've customized a mask I got, though!
I was given this mask as a gift for buying my doll body:
Then I customized it to look like this:
I just used the "Mr. Super Clear" spray to protect the resin, then chalk pastels (for the blue shadows) and a paintbrush to brush it on, and then watercolor pencils for the colors (with a bit of water and a thin paintbrush to smooth the colors down).
That, at least, wasn't very expensive. Well, the Mr. Super Clear wasn't entirely cheap, but there are less expensive ways to protect the resin. xD;
I'm really looking forward to customizing an actual doll. >3<!~

I love BJDs, but sadly I am way too poor to buy one of my very own. XD I want to save up for one so bad! I am definitely only going to get one, though; one that will be like a special friend forever, so I am going to be super picky with how she's going to look.

Ball-jointed dolls are beautiful and I'd like to have one, but they are much too expensive. I can't spend that kind of money on something that has no real purpose. Maybe when I have a real job.

I haves blythe!!
I got the Prima Violetina. I haven't really actually done anything with her yet. I had her in this thing for like a year and when i took her out her legs still have 'bruising'. If you know what i mean. She used to scared the HECK out of me when her eyes changed. Once my brother pulled a prank on me and he sang the creepy song with the la la la's in it and put it in front of my face when i was sleeping and i woke up to the sound and he started pulling the eyes and i screamed and now i am afraid of that doll but she's so pretty (:

I think BJDs are just lovely. I don't have one for myself, but I definitely wouldn't mind saving up for one. I guess I'll be on the lookout for something I really like.
I don't really like Blythes as much as I like BJDs, but I wouldn't mind have one of those either.
Some Blythes are really, really cute but the others just freak me out. D;

@CK That mask is awesome! It sort of looks like Day of the Dead skulls. Was that your inspiration?
What happens if you accidently stuff up? Is it easy to undo it?
@ember2pheonix That doll is stunning! So you call them Pullips? What other types are there?

I would love to get a Blythe doll. I've been searching for the perfect one but have yet to buy any because they are expensive. I prefer Pullip dolls though. I find them more appealing and a tad cheaper. :P

Glitterjazz: Yeah, unfortunately I know what you mean. My Pandora had staining. I used Oxy10 acne goop on all the spots and put her in a sunny window for a couple of days. I did this twice, I think, then cleaned her off and wrapped her legs in a white cotton t-shirt for a while. Almost all of her "bruises have disappeared completely and the two little spots that didn't are really really light. Also, congrats on Violetina, she's super cute. I love the fantasy-haired girls.
Awesome: Have you tried looking on the This is Blythe forum? If you are a member (just a sign-up, no fees) you have access to a Buy/Sell/Trade thread. It's THE BEST place to look for and buy a Blythe. You will find people selling them for less with a few "bruises" or scratches, and also naked. Naked is always cheaper because the stock clothes have their own value.
Wonderlands: There are all kinds of BJDs. I'm not really as familiar with them as with Blythe. Volks makes Super Dollfie and there's Pullips by JUN Planning (and Dal is the smaller size doll in their line), but there are others made in Korea and China, too.
Vompire: The BJDs are made of a polyurethane resin, but the Blythes are hard plastic, well their heads are, their bodies are softer and more flexible, but still plastic.
IkuAki: Yeah, it's expensive, but alot of hobbies are expensive. It's definately an investment though. I know that most Blythes have, unless they've been extremely abused, maintained or even gone up in value. Actually, even the dolls who have been wrecked during a failed customization attempt have value to other customizers.

Yeah - that was my inspiration. xD I love sugar skulls/Day of the Dead stuff. :3 Instead of doing a full skull, I just did things that would relate to the character who will eventually wear the mask. xD I didn't want to over-decorate for him as it wouldn't work well. But I looked at lots of sugar skulls for inspiration before doing the mock-up (and then the actual face-up). :3
It seems fairly easy to remove, though I haven't done it myself yet. xD It just takes time. From what I understand, it's just a wash with alcohol and then maybe a Magic Eraser. Whenever I actually remove a face-up, I'm going to read everything properly, just in case. :3

I enjoy looking at BJDs, but I don't have any. Probably I'll buy one when I'll be an adult, as they're so expensive.

BJDs are certainly a passion, though I've never quite been a fan of Blythe. I guess because none of them look anywhere close to the characters I have, and I love to find the perfect BJD for my characters. I currently have 2 BJDs - Eresat/AOD Open-eye Jimi and Sparrow/B&G Ymir. They are my BABIES, and I did the face-up for Eresat myself. Though I am sadly too poor to buy them all the wonderful clothes and accessories I would like << both were gifts - one from my best friend and one from my mom.
I always have troubles with people who are unfamiliar with the dolls mistaking them both for girls... while Eresat I can understand (he is intentionally girly - the character is super effeminate), Sparrow... well, he looks like a little boy, not a girl << Buuuuut that could be because I'm so used to the anime male genders and the variations XD Aaah well.

I'd love to see pictures of everyone's dolls. I'm not so famliar with the names of all the BJDs.
Here's a picture of my Sparrow (Heart of Montemartre) adventuring last fall. I'm not a great photographer though...

Ahhh ;A;
I wanted a BJD for Christmas this year,
but I decided to skip getting it,
because I wanted some of the Pop'n Music games and the controller-
which became too much trouble so I didn't get either a BJD or Pop'n OTL
I don't like Blythe, I think their heads are too big XDD;;;
But I do want a BJD eventually,
evil SOOM and their monthlies (I think it was March or June or something?
It was a boy and girl- the boy had light blue hair and sweet pink eyes.
He was ADORABLE ;_____; )

I think the Blythe dolls are cute, I don't think I'd ever actually own one though.
But, I think ball jointed dolls are absolutely gorgeous. (;
I don't have one myself, not yet at least, but I do really like them. (:
