I see your point - it is fantasy, so it can be changed. I certainly can't complain too much about "the original storyline being mucked up" when I like fantasy Vampire stories about how they're gorgeous and fall in love with humans - because that's definitely not the original storyline. Unfortunately.

However, even if I didn't have a problem with the sparkling, I would still have a problem with day-walking part. Vampires don't day-walk simply because they're Undead. Do you see Zombies (another type of Undead) walking around in the daytime? Um, no. I don't, either. Well, except in Vincent Price's movie with Zombies, but they had to have a special serum injected into their bloodstream to be able to walk in the daytime (which was really pushing the limits) - and even then they were weak and exhausted!

Sorry. Just saying. :XD

Probably the dream of all writers and authors is to write an original story that would interested everyone, lol. So I can understand that part. =3

So, really, i think that all of this sparkling nonsense is just something that she did so that she could progress with the story line and, later, she still didn't have anything to replace it with. So she improved it and let it be.
Hmm. That's an interesting idea.
I don't know her, so I can't really say whether she would or not, but if I heard that from some documentary or something I would probably believe it.

The day-walking doesn't bother me, personally. I think different authors doing different things with that makes it interesting! I've encountered so many awesome ways of people portraying the ability or lack of ability for vampires to go out in the sun. And goodness knows I vary daylight tolerance when I write about vampires! Depends on the story/take on vampires I decide to make up.

Really? That's interesting, because I've never been exposed to any media where sunlight hinders zombies! I'm totally, one hundred percent accustomed to them just being mindless, undead beasties that aren't really hindered by much except their head being destroyed. I'm more used to the 'zombie apocalypse/zombie hunting/fighting' zombie culture, though, and presumably that's very different than the more traditional zombie culture you're probably more familiar with. Can you recommend any good zombie books for me to read? I admit, I'm completely guilty of only knowing much about modern zombies.

I don't think it ever gave a legitimate reason for vampires to sparkle in Twilight. It serves them no purpose and had almost nothing to do with much of anything except to make Edward look like someone attacked him with a be-dazzler. I have no idea how he can be hard an multifaceted enough to sparkle while maintaining his ability to move so this has never made any kind of sense to me at all. Creativity is nice but it's like Meyers took the folklore and tossed it out the window. I write vampire stories and yeah they are very out there but I have explanations for everything that happens with them and I don't stray to fat from the original concept of a vampire. I actually love strange and unusual vampires my favorite series is Hellsing after all. The only thing Edward and vampires have in common is blood and he's a "vegetarian" so as a vampire he sort of well...flops.

I agree that the sparkles were unnecessary.

And Meyers did explain in the book Twilight why the Vampires sparkled, but it was completely lame.

Apparently the sparkles were to blind the prey.

Oh and I can't believe they were "vegetarian" Vampires.

You're not vegetarian if you're drinking blood.

I don't understand why they would sparkle.
I mean aren't they just the unholy undead? Ok, they are special with special gifts, they don't need to breath, their blood doesn't flow as much.
But when was the last time you went outside and sparkled? And not been wearing enough glitter to make a fairy jealous?

Vampire powers/gifts are to make them stronger and more appealing to humans so they can get blood. (ok other then the bursting into flames in sun part). So how does sparkling help?
All it does is say "look at me I have some weird skin disease. stay away from me"

"Blind the prey"? Really? ummmm lets see they hunt at night or in the evening right? They only sparkle in direct sunlight how does this work in any way? I'm sorry but it just seems like it has no real advantages at all. Also why don't they sparkle under artificial light? If there skin is that reflective shouldn't all light reflect off of it? How does something as elastic and supple as skin reflect light in the first place. I know vampires are fictional but most stories I've read had reasons for vampires to have certain abilities.

Hmm - Jacob Edward Bella. JEB. Do we know who or what Jeb is? :o

@Lilith: Exactly. I too cannot recall any other time where the undead are sparkly. Unless Vampires are the new fairytale Princesses...? :XD

And apparently it's supposed to blind the prey. :XD

@Wistful: LOL!! But I thought it was called something else - there was one in a movie theatre not too long ago and I could SWEAR it was called something-or-other Vampire (I can't remember what the other word was). Didn't the guy even wear a white shirt with the letter E on it? Or the letter J? Something like that, anyway. :(

@Faulkner: I'm pretty sure Edward & company hunt animals during the day on the weekends?
And what about summer, when it's really sparkly in the evening?
:XP

Ah, crap, I meant sunny...:headdesk:

Well sometimes in direct sunlight (it doesn't work under inside lights, though) I look at my arm and if I look closely enough it almost seems as if I'm wearing a bit of glitter (albeit the 'glitter' would have to be made of super-tiny pieces). Perhaps the author's skin does the same and that's where the idea was first spawned? :?

I think it was less to "blind the prey" and more to (as much as I hate this word at the moment) dazzle them... or entrance if the word dazzle is repulsive to you as well.

I would have to agree with most others that posted here. It really was kind of random to mention that they sparkled in the sun. I personally thought the idea was dumb but hey, as a writer you can write whatever you want in your stories even if it really does not make sense.

Good one, Faulkner!!

Too true, Mystic. You and Iltu are right - it's fantasy and it's a story and the writer can do
whatever they please (not that that
means it should be done, though).

Yes she can do as she pleases and I in return can hate it all I want. Just because she can use an idea does not make it a good one. I still say the whole sparkling thing is superfluous as far as it's use in the story.

Lol. He was really cute in that movie, though. Too bad he's way old now - and too bad he's gay - and too bad I'm ugly.

Then again, even if he wasn't gay and I wasn't ugly and he wasn't old,
I'd still never have a chance to meet him, lol.

Plus, wasn't he married once? :?:

Hmm. Maybe he's the one who gave the sparklies to the Cullens.

David Bowie is still married to Iman. c:
From what I've read, he's tried some stuff and came out as bisexual in the 70's, but has always been primarily heterosexual.

To actually add to the thread topic: I'm no fan of sparkling vampires, but I don't actually hate them. I'm just kind of like, "Eh, not my style, to each their own."

What? Seriously? But I heard his wife divorced him after catching him.

Oh. Wow.

I understand that kind of opinion too, but still...

SPARKLING VAMPIRES??

C'mon. You've gotta be at least a bit irked at that prospect.

For me it wasn't even so much that they sparkled (although I don't care for the idea) It was the fact that it had literally no real use in the story. It served no purpose and it wasn't important to the decidedly lacking and unoriginal Mary Sue meets Vampire plot.

My biggest beef with the story is that the sparkling makes no sense. There's no reason for it (not a real one any way) It would be impossible for him to move if he was hard and shiny enough to sparkle like that and it's just extra thrown in junk. All in all....

He said it. It's illogical even by mythological standards.

I love all the little anti twilight pictures. They make me feel good when I'm having a bad day.
