No need to brainwash you as long as you believe in it already. Brainwashing is only necessary for difficult converts like Garrett. Only reason they washed Reese was because they didn't want her running back to the pirates with the secrets of the cult, especially since she had the map to the tunnels. There are a few converts who are perfectly non-brainwashed. Its just that a religion that worships a platypus and believes that we're going to be turned into mutant plants in the end of the world is a bit hard to grasp. And THAT is why the army of cult zombies was so ungodly huge.
