I wish I had the excuse of being busy, but I don't. xD; I just forget and only seem to remember when I'm sleepy (which is exactly when I should not read, since then I'll end up getting even sleepier and not comprehending a word I read)

I'm on book 9 already! Woo! XD
I'm currently reading the Jungle, by Upton Sinclair. It's kind of heavy, so it's taking time to read... But I've always wanted to read it, so now I'm gonna finish it dangit!

I just finished book 12. I read Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. (Sookie Stackhouse books turned into HBO t.v show TrueBlood)
I don't know about it. It was kinda of...boring. The characters weren't really memorable and I didn't connect. I did find it better than Twilight but not nearly as awesome as Anita Blake. I'm not sure if I'll continue with the series. Has anyone read them? Let me know if they get better.

Ah, I gave up on the football book I've had out the library for ages so it went back today. I haven't even read in a few days because I keep staying up too late. I did seriously consider not getting any more books out but I'm me so it didn't happen.
When I finish the Torchwood book I'm reading now and the one I got from the library today I'll have read seven out of the nine already published. There's more coming out on the 29th of this month and then some more in October. I can't keep up! >.<

*hasn't been here in what feels like forever due to business* Sorry to any conversations I abandoned. DX
Ah, I am yet another soul not reading due to bussiness... I haven't finished anything since Wildwood Dancing, and I'm STILL reading Lolita. DX It's such a slow read. And I've stopped liking it, it's gotten incredibly disturbing. Like, more than it already was. I suppose I should have expected that from a book about a pedophile, but I loved part one so much. And part two, I do not love. At all. :< It makes me sad. I used to love reading it and was glad it was taking me so long. Now I just want to finish it and move on to Lisey's Story.

^ Don't concentrate on the subject of pedophilia. I know that it seems like such a prominent part of the book, but it's only a metaphor. If you're always sure to keep the symbolism in mind, it won't seem as harsh and unforgiving. Just try your best to appreciate the clash between Humbert's culture and Lolita's.

Huh. That is an interesting way to look at it, Knerd... I was looking more at it from more of a psycological perspective, which is why I like the first part so much. It's so fascinating to try to sort out his delusions from reality, as well as look at reasons behind why he is the way he is. I kind of felt like the second part of the book lost that, though, save for his constant fear of being caught. So I'll try to read it the way you suggest and see if that improves it for me. Thanks!

I've heard so many great interpretations of Lolita, it's just a matter of deciding which one fits you best:
- Old World European Culture vs New World American Culture
- An innocent man's exploitation by love
- A personification of Stalin's totalitarianism
- Tyranny from the tyrant's point of view
- The struggle to develop personal identity
- The power that words and language have over an audience: How you can forgive a monster (both Humbert and Lolita) as long as they present themselves eloquently
So yeah - Don't take the pedophilia at face value. It's just the subject of the book, not the reason behind it.

Knerd- I rather like the 'tyranny from the tyrant's point of view' spin on things... I'll have to put that lense on when I start reading it again!
I've been reading it for weeks now, so I decided to take a break and read other books for a bit. Right now I'm reading ironside by Holly Black.

I read quite a bit more of Anne Frank's diary last night and this morning. I looked up a picture of Peter, out of curiosity, but then I started reading about how everyone died and that depressed me and now I don't want to read. :c
I mean, I do, but... I don't want to get to the end.

Cherry- I'd have a hard time reading that books ebcause of that same reason. :[ But I still want to...
There's this movies called Freedom Writers, and I didn't see the whole thing... But there was this really awesome scene after the teacher had the class read The Diary of Anne Frank. One of the students stormed in after she finished it, slammed it down on the desk and shouted at the teacher for not telling her Anne died. I really like that scene, for some reason. :gonk:

I just finished it. I'm gonna cryyyyy. ;-;
You get this connection and attachment to Anne through reading it. She's very frank and completely open about what she thinks in her diary.
And then she diiiieees. ;~;
You... should read it though. xD;
I was considering reading Everything is Illuminated next, but after this... I can't. Too similar of a subject (about the after-effects of the Holocaust) and I... just can't do that right now. It's a fantastic story (I've watched the movie a few times), but just... not right now. xD;
I think I'll read Lord of the Flies. That is completely unrelated.

I've finally got The Last Olympian today. Only took a month to get it. xP
I haven't read any of the books in 10 months, so it took me a moment to remember who everyone was. xD
ALSO, this is really random and I apologize, but I feel like watching Teen Titans. :/
Wait- That wasn't supposed to be a pun! DX
I mean that seriously, I had the theme song stuck in my head yesterday. I went on youtube and watched the episode with Mothman when Robin had to take Kitten to her prom. xD

After reading Ajax, The Dutch, The War I'm not sure I'd be able to read Anne Frank's diary objectively at all, the whole thing makes me so angry. I'd love to visit the Dutch Resistance Museum, I've heard it's almost brutally honest about how the majority of the population acted during the war (the author jokes, although I appreciate it's not a laughing matter, it may as well be the Dutch Collaboration Museum).
New Jersey:
On a lighter note, I used to love Teen Titans. Now I have the theme tune stuck in my head too. Which has made me think of the Powerpuff Girls theme tune for some reason. Gahhh. O_o

Shadow- I've heard pride and Prejudice and Zombies is fantastic! I'm still waiting for my copy, though.
Yaaaaay! I finally finished another book! X'D I just got done with Ironside by Holly Black. Didn't realize it was part of a series until halfway through, though. So I plan to read the rest of the books now. Now to get back to Lolita, and then Lisey's Story.

I started reading Fahrenheit 451 a few hours ago. I'm already quite a ways into it. It's good so far! The detail is a little... much at times, but it's quite good so far.
Iltu - Yay! Be sure to mention it once you're reading it. :D

I :heart: Ray Bradbury. He's by far my favorite author.
If you like his writing style, but think that it's a little overwhelming in a novel, you should try to read some of his short stories instead. :yes:

Knerd, what are your favorite books by him? I want to read me some more Ray Bradbury!
Also, I'm liking Lolita again. I think I was more or less looking for reasons to dislike it, because it was taking me so long to read and I was getting frustrated... Now that I've taken a break and have read another book, I'm enjoying it once more.

I own Farenheight 451 and I think he wrote something else I own but I haven't taken the time to read through it yet. (Something Wicked This Way Comes, maybe?) Although I did just finish year 2 in the Harry Potter series.
