I've been working on the plot, and how about the riding crop is not inherently magical in itself, but has something attached to it that makes it have that paralyzing power? And if that works, what would that item be? It would be able to be fused to the crop as well.

ANYWAY. Yeah. I thought that the riding crop would just be like an accessory Jareth had to fidget with and stuff. ...Hmmmm. Maybe the magic in the riding crop could be like diminished a LOT, since Jareth's lost his magic and its power is connected with his? And only enough of the magic was directly absorbed into the crop for it to paralyze for only a small amount of time?

Perhaps Sarah left without pulling back her hair, so Rheila finds a clip and gives it to her - and it ends up coming from Jareth's room - perhaps it was a gift to her if she accepted him? But Rheila doesn't know that - and Jareth refuses to say anything at the moment but is CLEARLY ticked she has it - and that's how she gets the clip? 'cause she needed something to pull her hair back so it didn't distract her while trying to navigate the labyrinth?

I was going to have it come from a storeroom, and Rheila be able to detect the properties of the magical items, but not pinpoint where they were, so they'd have to dig through the clutter (it would be a MESS, since it would be stored by goblins), and try out several objects, and the hairclip would "win."

We could use your idea, too, though--But that would mean that they would consciously be sending Sarah out with Jareth without any sort of magical advantage. Plus, why would Jareth enchant the hairclip with only limited use? If she was to be his queen, he would want her to be able to be protected anytime, anywhere, right?

Perhaps that's how it was at first?
Perhaps it was only meant to protect Sarah?
But as Jareth's magic decreased, and his love for her was erased - the magic in the hairclip decreased and so it became limited?
And she was only able to protect Jareth when her feelings for him meshed with the love in the hairclip? Therefore strengthening our idea that the hairclip only saves Jareth when Sarah starts to see his true self and starts to fall in love with him?

Maybe a part where he has to haul her arse out of there and then he scolds her when they're safe, and she's all, "But I didn't want you to get hurt!" And he's like, "Why do you care so much about someone you've just met not that long ago?" And she's all, "UHHHH. LOOK. A SHINY."
