Yeah, Clariel did have a completely different feel to it. It's not something that I see myself ever rereading.
I think that the story gave us a lot of neat background information about Belisaire and the Old Kingdom, and some interesting history of the traits passed within the Royal family, but the story itself isn't too compelling. It's hard to get engaged when a book doesn't have a clear storyline progression: Stuff happened, then some more stuff happened, and so on. There wasn't really any particular end-goal or rise and fall to the action. That always bugs me.
And I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't like the time that Clariel spent within her school - It just didn't fit within the kind of narrative that was in Sabriel or Lireal. These books are about young girls going out into the world and having adventures! It seemed counter-productive to be like "Okay kiddo, it's time for class now!" That beginning section of the book could have been handled better, especially since it's only purpose was to introduce us to the characters and talk about social mores.
