Just to add to that brilliant point of your's, were there any danger of us dying because of the black hole experiment in 08, then they wouldn't have said anything. Why? Because they wouldn't have wanted to cause a mass hysteria.
People make up the world ending rumours because there are only two things that are certain in our lives:
We will suffer and we will die.
Some people believe that once you are convinced that you will die and in the end you don't die, it is beneficial to your mental health. It gives you a different outlook on life, it makes you feel better. Dying is the only way for some people to live. At least thinking that they will die. Quite honestly, humankind is not happy unless they think that they a part of a massive conspiracy that ends in the destruction of Earth.
For all we know; the world ending in 2012 may be a metaphor. A metaphor for the world becoming a different place, a better place. It would be naive to hope that, because we are corrupted and it isn't like humankind will change within such a short period of time.

I personally think that the world will not end in 2012 but it really depends on your view of the world.
The people who came up with this rumor, whether it be true or not, also said the world will end in 2000 and now see what's happened to us.
We're still here aren't we?
I believe there may be a disaster that will happen in the year 2012 but I'm pretty sure the world will not completely end in 2012.

I think the only "disaster" that will happen in 2012 is mass riots of people who actually believe the world is going to end. Also, whats going to happen according to the Myan callenders(polar shift) happens every few centuries. So there really isnt anything that we need to be worried about. Though, thats just what Ive heard/read into.

Not sure if it's been brought up (and I haven't read through the thread because I am a lazy person o 3o) but does anyone remember War of the Worlds? The radio broadcast, not the spinoff book/movie.
Way back when, we had radio theater. It's basically people performing a play, only over the radio so they made their own sound effects and it had to all be heard, not seen. War of the Worlds was one of those broadcasts. It sounded so real, so authentic, people really believed aliens were attacking earth and panic took over.
It's called mass hysteria. That's all War of the Worlds was, and that's all 2012 is going to be.

I know that the Yahooo Newsfeed isn't the most accurate, but about a month and a half ago they said that scientists claimed to have made a mistake. They said that the Mayan calendar that our present day one is based off of was translated wrong. I don't remember all of what it said, but I will try to find a link and edit it in here. It went on to say that when translated correctly, the 'end of the world' wouldn't be for another 50 years minimum.
I personal, however, do not believe in 2012. If it happens then it happens, if not, then the world goes on. What is the point in disrupting ones life for something that has only been predicted and has no way of testing if it's true or not?
HAZAH! I have found it! Gaze upon this!

Eh, most likely not. Although there might be some natural disasters, because there seems to be more of them lately (earthquakes in Haiti and Chile and China) And 2012 is just another movie that causes panic. And after 2012 is over and everything's fine, the people who believed the world was going to end are probably going to sue the movie's director for making them panic. Lol, imagine that. And if we DO die in 2012, then woah, weird.

No. We're mere mortals, we cannot choose when the world is ending.
Not to mention, why would Mayans make a calendar that lasts forever? Even computers don't.

The Mayans didn't make a calendar that lasts forever; that is where the debate of the end of the world orginates from. Philosophers looked at the Mayan calendar and have said that the day in which it ends is the day the world shall end.

They said the same thing about the year 2000 aka 'y2k'.
We dead yet? No.
Just keep on living til you can't breathe no more.
Simple as that.
That's when the world ends. For you.
But that's my point of view.
