I finished Firebirds Rising the other day, I really need to add it to my list! There was a few really good short stories in there.

I started Absalom, Absalom! by William Faulkner yesterday, and it's alright so far. I hope I like it at least nearly as much as I liked The Sound and the Fury! My favorite character from it, Quentin, is the main character in Absalom, Absalom!, but he's actually not had that big of a role so far besides being invited to an old lady's house, listening to her talk for hours (and pages and pages), asking his dad why in the world she wants to tell him (Quentin, that is), of all people, her story, and then listening to his dad talk some more about the same story. :P

I love Good Omens. It was the first work involving Neil Gaiman I think I ever read.

When the librarian handed me my books today after scanning them he said "Good luck" and I have no idea why. I have done this reading thing before.

Eight books left for my challenge! I'm gonna have the thing done early, I think.

Good Omens is a wonderful book. :P

Hey everyone! When I turned around last week, my life went "EXPLODE," but meanwhile I finished another book in that goshdarned Belgariad series! Whee. :)

Done with Queen of Sorcery, onto Magician's Gambit. Also, I read the first chapter of Harry Potter aloud to my person the other day while we were snuggled up having our Apocalypse Date-- and guess who's hooked on Harry Potter now? Whoo! :boogie:

(5/27/11) Finally finished Barbara Ehrenreich's Bright-Sided! I'd highly recommend it (as well as Foer's Eating Animals, which I finished up not too long ago). Admittedly it has a poop-ton of information as expected, but it's pretty amazing if you have the stomach for that sort of thing. :yes:

I have finished reading in my sky at twilight.It is a collection of poems about eternal love. They are good poems, but hard to understand at times because it is written in old english. I also started reading penguin book of vampires It is a book full of short stories about vampires.

Heeeeeey guys, new way to get on those reading lists: rewire your body so that it refuses to ever, ever sleep when you want it to. I finished a book in one day! Or rather, one night. Whoops. :headdesk:

On the upside, this series is getting less painful by the minute? I sense improvement.


@Iltu: Please convince me to like Faulkner! I've tried and tried... what draws you to him? Is it the meandering clauses in the periodic meadows? Because I was not particularly enthused about the way he rains cats and clauses.

I have about 10 books left to read then I'm finished, but I have less than a month to complete it, but I'm quite happy with the amount that I have read. Reading over half is good enough for me.

Colors - :rofl: I do that with the ends of books a lot :P I'll be 75% done, and then I'll want to know what happens so bad that I stay up really really late till I'm finished :gonk:

Beauty - Better than me so far! I'm just a little over half way now. Course I do still have till the middle of august. I hope I can at least get down to ten books :lol:

So... I finished another one. Onto the last book in the series. Not sure whether I should be congratulated or slapped, because I'm reading as a coping mechanism. :sweat:



Yaybook! The last two books pleased me. I'm not liking the intro to the next book in the series, but there is hope.

I just hope the series ends well. I hate it when you dedicate several books' worth of hours to a series all for the ending to fall apart. Cross your fingers, guys!

Allow me to do my darndest to not write a small novel as I attempt to fulfill your request and answer your question!
What books by him have you read/attempted? I've only read The Sound and the Fury, and as I said, am working through Absalom, Absalom! so I am by not means a great authority on Faulkner. I like his writing style well enough and don't really care about his endless clauses one way or another. Oftentimes, I feel the way he writes ends up being integral to the novel, since what I've read by him is ALL about varying perceptions of the same events. But that's my opinion is all!

What draws me to this particular corner of Faulkner's work is that I LOVE the characters. I read The Sound and the Fury and fell in love with some characters and absolutely grew to detest others. It was one of those books where I wanted to crawl into the pages and hug some people, smack others, sit a few down to give them a good stern talking to, take some to a therapist, encourage others still, and there was one or two folks I would really have liked to grab by the collar, slam against a wall, knee in the groin, shove to the ground, then kneel on their chests while punching them repeatedly, even though that would really hurt my knuckles. But even when I felt that way about them I ALWAYS understood why they were the way they were and could see where they were coming from. That's a huge deal to me.

Absalom, Absolom! prominently features Quentin Compson (he's one of the ones I fell in love with from TSatF), so I really wanted to read it. I'm liking it quite a lot, because it's introducing me to even more compelling characters and the tales they have to tell, not to mention it's elaborating more on characters I'm already familiar with. And since it takes place the summer before one section of events in TSatF, soooo much about Quentin's character is coming to light, which is pretty cool.

tl;dr I love Faulkner's characters.

No, I haven't, and I keep thinking, "I really ought to get my hands on some Ranger's Apprentice so Car and I can talk about it!" and somehow I always forget when I'm at the bookstore! :gonk:
But I did find $50 worth of Barnes and Noble giftcards when I was cleaning/packing for a move, so I might use them on Ranger's Apprentice. ;)

Heeeey guys. I think that people who read books are super-super nice in general. There are a couple of threads on Menewsha that I really like... Whenever I see people from 50 Book Challenge or the Doctor Who thread around Menewsha, I get all excited and feel at ease. Even in really, really intense argumentative threads, seeing you lot around cheers me up. Thought I'd say. :glomp:



I think that what people like frequently indicates how awesome I will think they are. Books definitely rank.

Does this make me mean? Do you guys ever like or dislike people based on books/writing/geekiness/knowledge of the show Firefly?

John Waters has good ideas about books and how they indicate whether you should sleep with people. I think books also indicate whether you should talk to people, give them cookies or let them petsit for you. :yes:

I'm all for people making an effort to read. I've always loved reading and it came very naturally to me but I'm aware some of my friends struggle more with books. If they're still willing to try I'll always respect that.

If someone else likes one of my more obscure interests, like ski jumping, I'm all over them. :lol:
