I've been thinking about rereading A Series of Unfortunate Events. I know, it's a children's series, but I remember them being really good.

You know, I never read that series. I think that it really got popular when I was in high school, so I must have just barely missed the boat.

I'm sure I'll be able to get those from a library at some point in time. If I ever need a brain break, that would be a fun children's series to get into.

Yeah, I was about 10, so I was the perfect age for it. I didn't finish the series, though. Lost touch with it after the 8th book or so.

I remember it being fun, and it didn't talk down to you, which is always good in a children's book. The author put a lot of humor into it, too. I see quotes from it on tumblr occasionally and they still make me chuckle.

I work at a library so I have no reason not to be able to read 50 books in the course of one full year. This sounds super fun.

I have a new tablet now, and with that new tablet I am reading a ton of E-books. So those will be counted as well.

So let the list begin.

2012 listX

Start date: March 15th, 2012. (03/15/12)
0ri0n83's book list:

Finished books:

1. Hunger Games by: Suzanne Collins (Book 1)
2. Catching Fire by: Suzanne Collins (Book 2)
3. Mockingjay by: Suzanne Collins (Book 3)
4. Escape From Furnace: Lockdown By: Alexander Gordon Smith (Book 1)
5. Vampire Kisses by: Ellen Schreiber
6. Escape From Furnace: Solitary By: Alexander Gordon Smith (Book 2)
7. Escape From Furnace: Death Sentence by: Alexander Gordon Smith (Book 3)
8. Blood of Eden: The Immortal Rules by: Julie Kagawa
9. White Cat (The Curseworkers Book 1) by Holly Black
10. Wereling (Book 1 of the Wereling Trilogy) by: Stephen Cole
11. Prey (Book 2 of the Wereling Trilogy) by Stephen Cole

Well that didn't go as smoothly as I had initially planned. It is now a new year and I am already behind. Technically the new year for reading started the 15th, but we're going to say that it starts today. Manga will be counted in groups of 10 this year around since I read a lot of it. Textbooks will not be counted since I don't read them for enjoyment, and because we skip around chapters. There will be repeats.

2013 listX

New start date: 03/20/13.

Currently Reading:

Dark Lover (Book 1 of the Black Dagger Brotherhood) by J.R. Ward.

Finished "books"
01. *The Alpha's Pet (Dark Hollow Wolf Pack Book 1) by: Shannon West
02. *Cry Wolf (Dark Hollow Wolf Pack Book 2) by: Shannon West
03. *Reserved
04. *Gabe's Alpha (Dark Hollow Wolf Pack Book 4 by: Shannon West
05. *Reserved
06. *Reserved
07. *Reserved
08. *Reserved
09. *Reserved
10. *Trials of Tam (The Larsen Legacy Book 1) By: Amber Kell
11. *Anchored by: Rachel Haimowitz
12. Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) Volumes 1-10 by: Yana Toboso
13. Kamisama Kiss Volume 1-10 by Julietta Suzuki
14. Black Bird Volume 1-10 by: Kanoko Sakurakouji
15. 07-Ghost Volume 1-10 by: Yuki Amemiya
16. Raven Girl by: Audrey Niffenegger
17. Bound: Forget me Not by: H. B. Pattskyn
18. Natsume's Book of Friends Volume 1-10 by Yuki Midorikawa

Not sure what happened to March 2013 through March 2014. I read mostly textbooks. Will begin another list for 2015 more towards well March.

Added you to the front list!

For the sake of easy reading, I catalogued your name under the O section, instead of zero. I hope that's okay.

Did I tell you guys a little bit about MyHogwarts before? It's another fan site for Harry Potter that's pretty much centered around social networking between fans. The beta just opened up and I got into my dorm room today.

Did anyone else manage to get a spot?

MyHogwarts

You won't be able to get an account until June, I think, but the site's main page will explain a lot about it.

This seems really promising so far. It'll be the chance to connect with a lot of fans and really discuss the different moral and intellectual philosophies within the book series. There's even a huge movement to share wizard rock movement between new bands.

Isn't it kind of exciting? Social network sites are really the wave of the future (wave of the present?) so it makes sense to dedicate specific sites to certain fandoms. I think that this one is going to be a turning point in how people organize their interests online. The concept has so much potential.

I just started reading Alan Alda's memoir. I haven't finished Otherland yet (to be honest, I've barely started it...), but I won this for free on Listia, and it came in the mail yesterday. It was sitting here next to me staring at me and I couldn't resist. So far it's really good!

Also, while looking into that, I saw that Alan Alda did the narration for the World War Z audiobook. I think I can get over some gross sound effects to hear Alan Alda read me my favorite book.

(For the record, I love Alan Alda  )

What I have noticed is that with the emergence of social sites, people have become more dependent upon them as a form of communication. No more do the people I know send me actual email, call or text as much...instead I get the all to more common answer to "what have you been up to?" as "Don't you have me friended on [social site]?" or "not much, you should follow my tubmblr/twitter/etc"

I'm kind of jealous! I missed the beta testing for MyHogwarts! Every time I checked it wasn't the right time frame.
How great is it?

I think that you could argue the same thing about every technological update. Snail mail was replaced by telephones, replaced by fax, replaced by email, replaced by instant messengers, by video chat, by texting, by social networks, on and on. Younger generations have technology so embedded in their lives that it becomes a natural part of interaction. I don't think that there's anything really wrong with that - It's just another form of discussion and an opportunity to share information with a wider audience

There's really not much on there at the moment. We have individual "dorms" where we can post and make friends. 10 people are automatically placed in a dorm depending on what House you chose. There's really no way to explore the rest of the site or make friends unless someone gives you their URL. But they're adding more to the site as time goes on, so it should get more interesting soon!

Today I went to the library to get a book that I'd looked up on the library catalogue earlier. Only when I got there I realised I was standing in front of the right section but had completely forgotten the author's name or the title. After staring at the shelves for a while I remembered that it was by the same author who wrote Lord of the Flies so started looking for that. There wasn't a copy there but seeing the right book jogged my memory. It's Rites of Passage by William Golding. /end tale of derp

lol, I know exactly how you feel! I've done that myself many times. I'll go to a bookstore looking for a book, and once I get there and stare at the shelves, it completely flies out of my mind. :gonk:

Woo, I got some free books today! \o/ I was helping my grandparents organize their extensive DVD collection, and I came across some books shoved back behind the DVDs. I asked if they wanted them stored somewhere else, and they said I could just take them to Goodwill or keep them for myself because they had already read them and weren't interested in reading them again.

So! I got Down Came the Rain (which I was planning on asking if I could borrow anyway. I love memoirs), 1776 (judging by the reviews, a very well-written account of events) and Sinatra: The Life. There was also a NASCAR book, Sunday Money, which I gave to my dad since he likes NASCAR and wants more books to read. :)

Also, I mentioned a few posts back another free book I got (from Listia), Never Have Your Dog Stuffed, which is Alan Alda's memoir. So far it's really good! I love Alan Alda, and his screenwriting prowess definitely translates into memoir writing. And his attitude is just fantastic - I've read memoirs that sounded self-absorbed, but Alan is quite humble while still telling very interesting stories.

Cherry, I am so jealous of that Sinatra book!
So much so that I think I'm going to go hunting for it... that and the Monroe book done by the same author!

And you guys!
I finally managed to get through A Feast For Crows!!
Now to continue on my reading list while waiting for A Dance With Dragons to be available in paperback!

GO READ 1776!

McCullough is a great historical non-fiction author. His book "Truman" is probably my favorite book ever written. I know that his detail oriented style isn't for anyone, but you'll walk away from it with a much better knowledge of American politics.

And Kendra, I'm halfway through Feast of Crows right now - We'll have to gush over it as soon as I'm done!
