I'm planning on giving the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy a re-read. I rather enjoyed that book.
Gah, if I had all the time I wanted, I could read 50 books in 100 days! DX (that would depend on the length of the book, or course).
Before I start reading, are there any recommendations?
|
If you can handle a bit of sexual stuff, I'd recommend "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen. ^^ I think that just about anyone would enjoy it greatly.
But your profile doesn't say how old you are, so I can't guess as to whether you'd be able to handle the content or not.

I've read sexual stuff before. It sort of surprised me because I was NOT expecting it (bought the book at the airport because I was bored) and it ended up having some surprising content. Still, I enjoyed it XD
I'm 17, by the way XD
I should really edit my profile...

Oh. Yeah. Then you can definitely handle it. XD I'm a year younger than you. XD
The things it describes are a bit... graphic, but it's not like, a pr0nz novel. It's tasteful in that it's very relevant to the overall story, and isn't just put in there for sex appeal.

I do think that SOME scenes in the book I read were put in for relevance, but others really threw me off. The book ends in a scene that I did not see coming D8;

It's a sequel to Chocolat, which was made in to a movie with Johny Depp. ^ ^
That's the author talking about it on her website. I just love her so much because she's shown herself to be quite versatile in her writing style. She published a collection of short stories that gave evidence enough of that. xD The one thing that never changes is how rich in detail and description her prose is. Sumptuous. x3
But if there's anything sinister about it, it's the ideas rather than any particular gore. I finished reading Beyond Black, which has lots of severed bits and pieces. I think when I'm reading, though, I can just tune it out and not think about it. On film, you kind of have things shoved in your face. x__x
I have The Historian waiting on my bookshelf. xD Now that I've actually read Dracula, I might be able to approach it without feeling guilty.
|
Robert Deniro was pretty amazing. His character definitely helped the movie along.
Was Chocolat good?
Reading is better for me too because the mental images that come into my mind while reading can be what I want them to be although some are involuntary and can be worse than if it was a gory scene in a movie but by the time I go onto the next section of the story I'm getting new images that can at least blur out previous ones.
Hmm, I guess I should read Dracula first as well but it'll be awhile before I start on it because I have a whole list of books to get to first.
@Knerd: I do hope the lack of characterization will be made up by the extensive research.
Should I read Dracula first? If it says, "I vant to suck vor blood" once it's probably not going to be my kind of book unless there are really good characters.

I've never read Stephen King but last summer my boyfriend was obsessed with the Gunslinger Series.
From what he told me it wasn't that bad, gory wise. But he is a boy, his and my views are different.
Gore doesn't bother me. :D I reading Laurell K. Hamilton. All she writes is gore and sex. Haha.
Oooh yeah. Updated my list and added Danse Macabre.

10. High School Bites
11. Sleeping With The Fishes
12. The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening and the Struggle

Not all of his books are keep-you-up-at-night-terrified horror.
I think the least scary one -that I've read- would be Misery. It deals with a crazed fan, but not with any inhuman monsters or anything. Despite it being one of his books that is the most realistic, it's also the least scary.
Another would be Cujo, but I wouldn't recommend that if you have a fear of dogs, or have a pet saint bernard.
I'm almost finished with Pride and Prejudice! I stayed up until three last night reading it. I only have a little under a hundred pages left.

As I DO have a fear of dogs (one of them almost got me when I was little), so I'll stay away from those. I will give Misery a try, though >w<

Ooh, yes, never read Cujo, then. It's about a Saint Bernard that goes rabid and kills some people. o_o
But yes, Misery is quite good! ^^
It's generally quite easy to find, too. Having been very popular, but also being a bit old. Lots of copies of it.

EEK. Alright, I'll DEFINITELY stay away from that one now XD
I asked a friend at school and she said she recommended these:
My Sister's Keeper
Change of Heart
The Secret Life of Bees
Lolita
Marly and Me
A Great And Terrible Beauty
Lamb
Love Bites
Has anyone read any of those that thinks would make a good start? I just realized how much I needed a book today. Sometimes I have NOTHING to do. I needs a book~ DX

@Platinum - The only one on your list that I've heard of is A Great and Terrible Beauty. I began to read it for my schools book club and I found that it wasn't very catching. You want a book to catch you and this one did at first, but then, it went downhill from there.

No, you really don't have to bother with Dracula first. As long as you have e general idea about his story and how it developed from Vlad the Impaler, you're good. Kostova tells you everything else you need to know.
I've never read any King, and I probably won't. That just isn't my genre.
I've gone on Wikipedia and read the synopsis of a few of his lesser-known books, and they just made me shudder. I don't think I could handle an entire book.

As far as scarier stories are concerned I like Frank Peretti. I'm not good with horror so he is good about giving you what you can handle. I really like The Oath and another one of his other popular books is This Present Darkness which I haven't read yet.
@Knerd: Okay. I'll probably just do some basic research on the subject before I get started.

I love King. My favorite book is Eye of the Dragon. I like scary books so that does not bother me. The thing I don't like is he can go on and on about nothing. He might start describing one character for 50 pages.
I also like Dean Koontz. He is like King but with shorter books.

I finished Pride and Prejudice!
I stayed up until 3 last night reading it, and then read it every chance I got today. It's finally done!
Now I'm onto Twilight. Another massive undertaking.
Luckily, after that I have A Clockwork Orange which is comparatively MUCH smaller. ^^

@ PlatinumChild -> My Sister's Keeper is an amazing book. I had to read it for my Genetics and Literature class last year and I absolutely loved it.
This sounds really fun. I wish I would have found it earlier. I'd like to give it a go, even if we're already halfway through the year. Just one question, do we have to choose books that we've never read before or can we use books that we're rereading?

Didn't King get paid by the word/page? Maybe that's why his descriptions are too long sometimes D8;
Congrats on finishing, Cherry! >w<
Hm.. I'm pretty sure we can choose books we're re-reading, as long as we use them only once on the list XD
So... I randomly started re-reading Ender's Game a couple of hours ago, and I'm on page 100 XD I haven't read this book in 3 years *_*
I'll probably start my list the next time I post XD;
