I like the Dirk Gently novels too. It's a shame the third one was never to be. :'(

On the DVD of the TV show there's a bunch of extras and some of them are interviews about the radio show and the 'field in Innsbruck' story. I'm going to a lecture about the history of Radio 4 next month (my exciting life!) so I hope they mention it. XD

@Dream and Die: If you haven't read The Graveyard Book yet, you really should. It was fantastic. You have to have more than a passing knowledge of the original Jungle Book to fully appreciate everything though.
@Cherry: I hate not having a computer. I don't get to borrow computers from people for very long. If I take too long they tend to get impatient...

@aislin - the 30% discount is wonderful, and really, i only go into work for work and because i work closing shifts, it's not like i can buy books at the end of my shift. i've bought maybe ten books in the past few months. (and have told myself that i will not buy more until i've read the ones i already have. XD)
i definitely must read hitchhikers, then. i haven't even seen the movie, either. @_@

@knerd - omg i must read don't panic. neil gaiman is one of my absolute favourite authors

@shadowfoot - i'm actually reading the graveyard book as of right now. and i will definitely persuade dani to do so also. (it might take lending it to her to do so, though. XD)

My breaks between books are too long. >.<

@shadowfoot: I read the jungle book a long time ago, so I might have to reread that before I move onto the Graveyard Book. Neil Gaiman kind of just amazes me with his creativity. xD

he takes awesome ideas and mutates them into something more awesome.

Well yeah, but you still have to be creative to take someone's ideas and turn them into a book that's creative, intriguing and popular in its own right. Because who would want to read a book that was basically a copy unless it was just as, if not more, creative as the original?

... The Lord of the Rings has been playing on a channel all weekend and I really want to read the books again now. Thanks a lot TNT. :sarcasm:

Even though Twilight is a very easy read, christy, I must admit its a pretty decent plot... So I like it so far. *nod* I haven't finished the book yet, but I'm really close to finishing...

Yay, I just got a bunch of books today!
One is called "Atlas of the Universe!"
Another is titled "UFO History." XD haha
And the other one is "Chariots of Fire." How perfect is that? Lol.

Them's mah basic rules with fanfiction, 99.999% of which is absolutely horrible. But then there's that small, teeny eensy weensy percent and, like watching a trainwreck, you still look and think, "Maybe there's hope! Maybe somewhere... some day..."

Neil Gaiman does not have that problem. Neil Gaiman is secretly a wizard. Neil Gaiman deserves a puppy and I love him.

@Leenie: Yes, you should! The book owns the movie, by the way, although the film isn't at all bad. It's fun to view, although it is an entirely different entity from the original plot.

The radio show gives giggly goodness.

@Kita: I hope you'll like the book as well! I found it especially fun to read when I was feeling cynical or sleep deprived; it perks you right up.

@Willow: Actually, I think almost all of Red Dwarf can also be found on youtube. Thus, youtube equals genius.

But Yeah, fanfiction is the proof that people can't copy others works (and make it good) unless they are pure amazing.

I though David Bowie deserved your unborn children? I remember you saying you wanted to trade them to Jareth for time in the labyrinth. xD
I should start that manga... xD

I just finished the book 'Goth: A Novel of Horror' and I really recommend it to anyone who likes books with twists and turns. But you need a strong-ish stomach. This book kept me going, "What?!? Who? How?"

Nooooooo! Not Jareth! Not the future father of my singing, dancing, Uber 80s Babies!

Gotta love a lover in eyeshadow who can Dance, Magic, Dance. :boogie:

@Leenie: Yes! There is actually a Hitchiker's radio show, upon which the books are based I believe. All by Douglas Adams, of course. I still have the CDs floating around my room somewhere... I could rip them to MP3/WMA so as to share them with you guys via the interwebs.

Edit: I've ripped the CDs and posted them to my skydrive-- let me know if you want the link!

 Funniest phrasing I've heard. The radio show has a lot in common with the book series, with regards to one liners-- you'll recognize more than a few from both of them.

Give me a while to post them all.

2/6: This folder.
3/6: This folder.
4/6: This folder.
5/6: This folder.
6/6: This folder.

I'll probably keep these up until Friday. Sharing the series with fans of the books seems like good juju, but I don't want to step on the toes of the original creators.

@Leenie: Goth was a-mazing! xD
Seriously I want to be Yoru and ___'s friend. (His names a secret)
Though you can't read it when tired or half paying attention, I tried reading some during a math lecture and I was so spun around I got confused. Plus you really need a strong type stomach or a strong lack of visualization skills because it really goes into detail at some points.

Yeah, I think I'm disqualified at the strong stomach and lack of visualization thing. I can read, say, Khaled Hosseini, but I visualize too much to be allowed and it throws me off for ages.

@Aislin: Well it's still good... xD I wasn't trying to deter people from reading it, because it is brilliantly written. It's just... a bit graphic. Like here's the summary on the back of the book (In white so no one has to read it):

Quote:
One tree had, from top to bottom: the left big toe, the upper lip, the nose, and the stomach. Another had other bits of her arranged like Christmas tree decorations. -Goth by Otsuichi
Kind of sad that's what made me want to read the book.

@Leenie: I can't help it if I read gore scene's happily -_-; That's why I write instead of act. I don't understand your confound emotions. ::shakes fist::

That's actually kind of poetic, really. Is there any way you could give a short summary of the storyline without giving anything away; the ideas that the book focuses on, basically? Normally anything with "Horror" in the subtitle doesn't work for me, because I like plots that have a philosophical edge.

I'm currently on page 154 of the hardbound Blink (Malcom Gladwell), and he's distracted me considerably. I've spend the last 20 minutes listening to Kenna on youtube. The artist is mentioned in the book, and I'm wondering if my positive response to "Freetime" is, in part, because I read about the response from U2 (they quite like it). I seem to be easily influenced.

I'll give it my best shot.
The book is comprised of six "short stories" that have the two main characters in them and are connected, but could be read alone. Basically its about a boy and a girl from high school, both are "out-of-the-ordinary" aka they are extremely interested in horrific crimes and death. Both are emotionally distant or have no emotions at all. Each story is about a different gruesome crime that both are drawn to. Its not like chainsaw massacre gore, its more intelligent. The way they try to track down murderers, not to catch them, but to meet them is really interesting. The book really focuses on the inner workings of a murderers mind and the male lead's fascination with death. He's told people that he likes to "haunt crime scenes to look for details" and to "stand where a body had been not long ago". As "horrific" as it is, it's also very intellectual.

I think if you like philosophical edges then you'll like it, it does go into the "why do we live?" "Why do we die." "Why am I doing this?" Type of stuff and it does have a poetic touch to it.

I want to see the manga version of it now, but I heard they combined two stories which shouldn't have been. Why do adaptations always do something really weird to change the plot line?

@ Dream: Thank you for the description! It definitely sounds intriguing, and actually sounds like something that I could be interested in. I've added it to my list and I'll look for it in Barnes and Noble when I make my next trip. A novel which questions death and focuses on psychological hangups would work for me. And, though I don't like graphic horror, morbidity comes out in my humor a lot.

Thank you for recommending it! I love getting good recommendations... it guarantees a satisfying and varied reading list.

@ Leenie: I hope you enjoy it! The series is definitely very British. In the best of the British sense.

We do all have katars; I wonder what that says? :P I thought that the katars were among the cooler Halloween items. I also really liked death's cape an the moonlit background.
